Bupropion And Decreased Alcohol Consumption (Top voted first)
UpdatedI've recently started bupropion, it's been a few weeks. I think I experienced every single side effect the drug had over the first few days but all is good now. I'm not depressed, nor do I have anxiety. I was actually hoping that maybe it'd make me happier but it hasn't done a single thing to my mood or drive; positive or by negative. I started taking it to quit smoking and I really enjoy it more than chantex as the drug makes me make the decision to stop smoking. It's decreased my cravings and side effects of quitting. I've noticed also that I have a dramatically reduced urge to drink. Even if I begin drinking I don't over do it, but typically I just have no interest in drinking. I find this amazing because, not that I'd admit it publicly, but I think that I may have or someday develop a problem with drinking. It's incredible to me how little I have had to drink in the last few weeks. The text on the drug doesn't say anything about that and I'm just wondering if anyone else has had a similar experience?

Like I said, I really have experienced almost all of the side effects... Not seizures... But within the first few days of starting the medication I was drinking. I hadn't had that much and felt completely fine but the next thing I knew I was in my bed and the morning was already here! I completely blacked out, not a single memory. That has never happened to me, and as I said, I really hadn't had that much to drink. I did read the info that comes with the medication but ignored the no alcohol because all drugs say that. A few days after my incident it dawned on me that the medication did say that; I looked up what would happen if you drink alcohol and the first side effects were blacking out and decreased tolerance. Luckily I was in a safe place with good people but that is something I'd warn others about.
Same thing happened to me. I was a moderate to heavy drinker, I've tried to quit many times and failed. Three weeks in and I have had almost no desire to drink and as someone else said when I did drink the side effects hit me like a train. One can of hard cider and the next day was awful. Also I have dropped 20 lbs.!
Biggus,
Good for you I can relate.it's amazing what a pill can do to ones mindset. I too struggled with alcohol but since being on this drug I recently celebrated 3 years sober and drug free. It's a beautiful thing,no doubt ... Continued success
Hello, Jessica! How are you?
You are not the first person to report such a thing and, it can also be dangerous to drink while taking this medication, because it can create the risk of seizures, alcohol lowers your seizure threshold, so you could double whammy yourself.
The FDA lists its other typical side effects as possibly including nausea, dizziness, headache and dry mouth.
Can anyone else that's taken this medication chime in?
I too have decreased smoking & have less of desire to drink... But I drink anyway & feel like HELL!!!!! Stomach hurts terrible, headache, shakes, ext... I honestly think after alot of research the alcohol is actually what's causing all the side effects so I'm going to back away. The dr never stressed to me that I should avoid alcohol.
Bupropion has a certain effect on the brain that reduces cravings for many things. That is why they have made a new weight loss drug that is part Bupropion to curb the cravings for food.

Maybe you should focus on yourself and stop trying to control everyone else around you. It's common for folks with possible addictive disorders to focus on others lifestyle choices. You'll find if you focus and control your own life you won't have the need to control others.
Thank you Diamond, to you as well.
Hmmm that's all I was going to say but I guess this forum requires a certain number of characters!
