My father was on Coumadin. One day he hit his head. If it were not for Coumadin, the small bump on his head would have amounted to nothing unusual. However, the Coumadin resulted in a cerebral hemorraghe. Even though he had been takikng Coumadin exactly as prescribed and had gone for each of his INR checks, when he got to the hospital, the doctors found his INR was off the richter scale. To relieve the pressure on his brain from the hemorraghe, they needed to operate. But they couldn't because his INR level was too high. They said it would take 24 hours to reduce his INR to a level at which they could operate. By that time, he was dead. Subsequently, the doctors wanted to put me on Coumadin for a year. I said no. They insisted and finally said you have to go on Coumadin for at least...

i was prescribed Clopidogrel 75 after a suspected TIA. All completed tests results were normal but i suffer from post-polio syndrome and have muscle weakness in both upper and lower limbs. Since taking Clopidogrel i have experienced symptoms similar to flu symptoms, which diminished a few days after stopping the medication. I also feel very lethargic and fatigued whilst on the medication. Any explanation? i am reluctant to take the medication firstly because the TIA was not proved to have taken place and secondly because i feel so ill whilst on it. ## All medications carry the risk of causing side effects, and the NIH does list those as being possible ones from this medication, along with dizziness, headache, increased risk of bleeding, and easy bruising. Have they checked your clotting...

Hi. My husband has just got home from a 7 day stay in the hospital, where he was diagnosed as having a large blood clot in his shoulder and a smaller one behind his knee. He is an insulin dependant diabetic, VERY overweight (at the moment at least. That one, we are going to work on asap). Tests yesterday revealed the clots have responded very well. He has been placed on an initial dosage of 4mg of sintrom daily, and has been given sintrom in the hospital. The doctors were obviously aware of the insulin (and metformin) medications, also that he has meds for high blood pressure. Reading the advisory with the sintrom, I couldn't find any counter indications to his medication regime. Having checked the internet advice I am now very concerned that he's going to have adverse reactions...

I am getting a lot of nausea, slow heart beat, very hot hands and hot face, occasional sharp, sudden pin like sensation - also weirdly getting 3 day binge hangover "delicate" feeling which I never get unless I have actually enjoyed the aforesaid. But I dont' want to stop taking as I am on day 3 following DVT treatment. I am taking the DM version of Heparin - self-injecting. Did anyone else suffer from similar symptoms? ## My mom was given heparin in the hospital and her hemoglobin dropped to 8.3 and her liver enzymes started elevating. Should that medicine be stopped because of liver enzymes?

After two years on apixaban I have developed an itchy rash. It's subsurface and is most intense around my waist. My doctor wants me to change to xarelto. I am delaying starting another blood thinner until the rash subsides. Can anyone share their experience with these symptoms and their solution ? Thanks. ## While this medication is listed by the FDA as causing a rash as a side effect, or as a possible allergic reaction, it is odd that it would appear after 2 years of taking it, though we are all different, and I am not a doctor. How long have you been off of it, now? There is a chance of your experiencing rebound effects, such as blood clots, if you stop it abruptly, without switching to a different medication, according to NIH warnings, so it is best to be careful and follow your ...

Is there any type of medicine that should not be taken while taking xarelto? ## Hello, Rho! How are you? You should avoid anything that may cause additional blood thinning, such as nonsteroidal anti-inflammatories. However, as to anything, I would need to know the specific medication you want to check, because there are far too many to list them all for you. Can you please post back with a list of the specific ones you want to check? Xarelto is classified by the FDA as a blood thinner, its typical side effects are listed as possibly including nausea, dizziness, headache, easy bruising and increased risk of bleeding. ## I am currently taking xarelto for DVT. I now have a cold virus. Is it contraindicated to now take over the counter cold remedies? Also, is it recommended to stop taking v...

I took 30 mg a day from3 weeks, then dropped it to 20 mg per day. About 6 days after dropping to 20 mg, I started to get pain in joints, primarily hands, feet, knees, elbows, etc. I am being treated for PE's. My rheumatologist tested me for all connective tissue orders which were all negative. I am suffering and only take Tylenol for pain, which is not too helpful. I am debating if I should switch blood thinners or if joint symptoms will reduce over time with the Xarelto. Thank you to all. ## Hello, Cenzo! How are you? Joint pain has been a frequently reported side effect of Xarelto and it doesn't seem to go away, which has caused quite a few people to have to stop taking it. Another commonly reported problem is weight gain of generally greater than 40 pounds. Is there anything ...

I have just found out i am about 5/6 weeks pregnant and i am on rivaroxaban. This will be our 4th child. I have been taken off it as of today and put on clexanie. I'm wanting to know if anyone else has been in this situation and has it affected the baby's health? I know the risk for my self but curious about birth defects and other health issues. I know there hasn't been enough research done but wanting to hear from other parents that have been in this situation. I have seen my doctor and they have given me all the advice they can so please don't suggest discussing with the dr. Any help would be much appreciated. ## Hi there, would like to know if your baby had any problems from you falling pregnant on rivaroxaban. I too was 6 weeks when I found out. Thanks in advance x

Got one month to before my 90 days on xarelto is over. I have been experiencing severe pain in my knees, ankles, hips and elbows. Never had this pain prior to the medication. Doctor shrugged off my concerns. I really need to know if this will stop after I am done xarelto. ## Hello, Chelle! How are you doing? Has there been any change? Many people have reported experiencing various body aches and pains, while taking Xarelto, and these symptoms are listed as possible side effects in the FDA patient advisory leaflet. It may also cause dizziness, headache, increased risk of bleeding and easy bruising. However yes, such symptoms usually go away, once the medication is discontinued, but it may take a few weeks for them to fully abate. If they are really severe, you should inform your doctor, ...

Experiencing Pain in my calf & leg muscles during the daytime. During the night, I wake up with leg muscles twitching. Get up, go to bathroom, back to bed & back to sleep. Cardiologist has had me on 20mg Xarelto/day for approximately 2 years for afib but haven’t had any negative reactions till now. Could Xarelto be the cause? Should I be concerned? ## Yes, there is a chance that it could be due to the medication, but there is no way to give you a definitive answer. The FDA does list its possible side effects as including joint/muscle aches, headache, increased risk of bleeding, and easy bruising. What dosage are you currently taking? Are you on any other medications? How often have you been experiencing these symptoms? ## I’m on 20mg/daily Xarelto. Have been on this ...

Hi, I have been on xarelto for 2yrs now, and because of being on social security disability and having partial medicare and my insurance I will now have to pay close to 100 to 150.00 for xarelto. I can't afford the expense now. I was put on it because of getting 2 P.E's in my lungs for being inactive with suffering from vertigo. I am now very active and my doctor doesn't want me to stop but that may not be a choice because I can't afford it. I was on warfarin for a while but they couldn't control my INR levels. Now I don't know what to do. ## Hello, Roger! How are you? The manufacturer, Janssen, has an assistance program to help with these types of issues, using it many people have no out of pocket expense for their Xarelto prescription each month. I need surgery for skin cancer. I have been taking Xarelto since March for Afib. I have waited over a week for my primary care doc to answer this question. Can I stop or do I have to be weaned off? ## Hello, Sandy! How are you? I'm very sorry about the skin cancer and hope that all turns out well. Usually, they have you stop taking it a few days, before surgery, but how long can depend on how complicated and in-depth your surgery will be. Thus, it would actually behoove you to ask your surgeon, they should be able to advise you on the matter. Xarelto is used to help prevent clotting and may cause side effects, such as nausea, dizziness, headache, joint aches, increased risk of bleeding and easy bruising. ## I was taking xarelto for nearly 6 mths. It contains the active ingredient Enoxaparin, it is a blood thinner that is used to help prevent blood clots. The FDA warns that it increases the risk of bleeding, and may also cause easy bruising, administration site reaction, swelling, and redness. Why was it administered?

The instructions say, take Xarelto with the evening meal. I read that, in tests, taking Xarelto at 8pm gave much better and longer protection than at 8am. The difference in coverage between 8am and 8pm was influenced by the circadian rhythm. Since the circadian rhythm is active 24 hours per day, then there must be other times to take Xarelto that are equally or more effective than at 8pm. I want to take Xarelto at 5am, with my morning meal, so that I don't forget to take it. Is the 5am morning circadian rhythm activity as good as it is at 8pm at night? Any thoughts? Suggestions? Thanks, Bob ## It would be best to take it, when your doctor has instructed you to take it. I have been on Coumadin for 6 months after switching from lousy Eliquis. Shortly after the switch my problems with Eliquis disappeared, but I did notice signs of ED. Never experienced this previously.....always good here. Has anyone experienced issues of this nature with Coumadin? Otherwise, I feel much better on the Coumadin. ## The FDA doesn't list that as being a normal side effect of this medication, they are typically listed as possibly including nausea, dizziness, headache, easy bruising, and increased risk of bleeding. However, there really is no way to be sure how any given medication will affect anyone that takes it. I have been taking clopidogrel 75 for circulation for nearly four years now and my hair is so thin It won’t cover my scalp properly, the loss has speeded up in the last six months and I would like to know if you think it will stop before I loose it all (which won’t be long) or is there anything else you can suggest, thank you. ## That is not a common side effect, as listed by the FDA. They are listed as possibly including nausea, dizziness, increased risk of bleeding, and easy bruising. There is really no way to be sure how any given medication will affect anyone that takes it, though. Are you on any other medications? How old are you? Have you consulted your doctor? There are other medications in this class that you can try.

I've been advised to stop taking blood thinners pre-op and want to know if any of my meds or vitamin supplements are blood thinners? ## Hi Leonard, Can you please take a moment to list the specific medications and vitamins or supplements that you're currently on? There are many substances (both prescription and OTC/natural) that could fall under this category; so to narrow it down based on your unique situation would make providing an answer much easier. Hope all is well! ## I’d like to try turmeric tea. They say you can’t drink it if you're on blood thinners. Is Coversyl a blood thinner? I take 8 mg daily. ## I take turmeric daily for arthritis and general inflammation. I had never heard of it re: surgery, but since I plan on surgery, I need to consider it now. ...

From all that I have read I can't find anyone who has crossedover successfully to natto or tumeric /asprin or any homeopathic medicine. I've just started xarelto for first DVT and am planning to come of asap. The fact that the company xarelto can't help after 10 years is questionable I don't understand why there is no definate research into how to taper off or how long is the half life and what actually is 'rebound' ... ## A rebound is when you stop a medication suddenly and experience increased blood clotting, which can create the risk of heart attack, or stroke. You should not stop it, until your doctor says it is safe for you to do so. Other rebound effects may include headache, nausea, and stomach pain. The half life isn't relevant, regarding when such si...

The FDA lists the typical side effects of Warfarin as possibly including nausea, dizziness, headache, increased risk of bleeding and easy bruising.
