Belviq Availability
UpdatedCan't find a local doctor to prescribe this new weight loss drug Belviq where I live in Central MN.
I'm sorry, but there is no directory of doctors that will or will not prescribe any given medication.
And if you're calling around to various doctors and asking if they'll prescribe any particular medication, they will tell you no, because that's considered drug seeking behavior and it doesn't matter what type of medication you're asking about.

Any doctor can prescribe it. Do you currently have a PCP that you see regularly? If so, you can ask them about it, or have them refer you to someone.
Hi,
I'm having the same issue. I met with my doctor and provided her all the information I could print on it. She informed me that because she wasn't familiar with belviq and it was too new to the market, she would not prescribe it. How do I find a doctor who will prescribe it? I've also called Arena Pharmaceuticals and they don't have a way to provide the names of doctors prescribing it. It's a little frustrating that it's been FDA approved and yet I can't get a prescription. Any information you could provide would be greatly appreciated. I'm in the Boston area.
You can ask your doctor to request a visit from a Eisai marketing rep. There is also information for healthcare professionals at belviqhcp.com
Family Medical Associates 860-388-9250 1250 Boston Post Road Old Saybrook, CT 06475 From their website: The FDA recently approved Belviq (Lorcaserin) for weight loss. It acts at specific serotonin receptors in the brain’s appetite, fullness, and metabolism pathways. Belviq is not a magic cure, with an efficacy of around 5% weight loss after 6 months, however it does provide our medical weight loss program another tool to help you reach your goal
Sherrie, thank you so much. This information is much appreciated.
Kristin - I am in Boston too and have had the identical problem with my PCP. Did you have luck with the Dr in Old Saybrook? It's a long drive but I would be willing to make it to try Belviq
Okay, so I just went through this same thing. Doctors don't like to prescribe weight loss medications because, the rate of addiction is higher than the rate of weight loss. They generally don't produce significant weight loss and they're almost always pulled off the market for some sort of reason. My doctor will write an opiate, benzo, ambien, at the same time but not a weight loss medication. Even with a free trial and coupon. You're best bet is to try and get on ADHD medication, or Topomax.
Been taking Belvic for about two weeks now. I am not diabetic, do not take any drugs for anything and so far, I think Belvic is amazing!!! I am over the BMI norm...46 to be excact, and I have had NO craving for food at all. I now have to teach myself what foods I need to eat and size up the portions. Never in my life have I felt this way. One little problem though. I recently developed an URI (upper respiratory infection)which is probaby making me weak. I do experience very small off/on headaches. I do certainly think this is worth it though. I will see my Dr. next week for the first f/u. So far I have lost 20 lbs. I also learned how to make my treadmill work....plug it in and stand on it.....
Hello,
I am located in Boston as well and am interested in Belviq. Have you found a doctor in Boston or nearby to prescribe this to you?
There is a telemedicine website by the name of DietDoc, where you fill out the paperwork with your medical history and give them a call. They have recently put out a press release saying they will prescribe Belviq. Good Luck on your journey.
I live in the Saint Paul area and the Allina doctor prescribe it.
I read your post about Belviq. I have been on it for 3 days and I can't stand the headache. But the med seems to be working so I will have to just deal with the headache but was wondering if the headache ever goes away once I get use to the drug in my system.
The headache WILL go away. I had a horrendous headache for about a week and a half and then it just went away. My doctor asked me to just stick it out for two weeks because that's usually how long it takes, or less. Good luck. If it doesn't go away after that, I'd talk to your doctor and see what he/she thinks.
I'm on day 2 of taking Belviq. I'm feeling really dizzy, almost drunk. I'm not feeling anything else. I'm very hungry and don't feel like it is cutting my appetite. I've taken phentemine in the past and it made me not want to eat. I was hoping this would do the same since this drug contains phentermine. Has anyone else experienced this? Will the positive side effects kick in?
Hello, I first went to a primary physician and he wouldn't prescribe it to me, claimed lack of knowledge about Belviq. So I waited for 3 months and at my yearly pap smear, asked my gynecologist. Doctor said he would research and to call him later that week. I waited through Christmas break and followed up with him. He thoroughly researched and I was asked to take a pregnancy test and I received the prescription. I have had 2 routine check ups in the 6 months since I started. So hopefully the gynecologist suggestion helps. Since he had never prescribed it and had to research the medication, he thanked me with the first checked by giving me that for free. Love that doctor, he actually meets and discusses my life and any problems. I actually have to find ways to get out after awhile. Usually it's the doctors who rush us!
My Phyciatrist prescribes it for me. They look at your overall well-being.
You should go online and look for doctors who include "weight loss" in their specialties. I'm not sure about other states, but in Florida and most other Southern states, there are weight loss doctors all over the place.
I've been on Belviq for 2 months. I've lost 15 lbs. The first few days I had headaches, which stopped after that. I had extreme fatigue for over a month, now seem ok, and the weight loss has increased my energy. I started tap dancing lessons again. I'm 61 years old. When I started I was 180 lb and now I'm 165. This is the time I've ever been successful at losing weight.
My BMI is almost below 30. Will my MD stop prescribing Belviq if I am no longer over 30 BMI and have no other co-morbidities?
The answer was no - if the insurance was covering it then I would have a problem - but because its out of pocket - there is no problem. I have lost about 10 lbs since 2/23. I am feeling like I am hitting a plateau but will push on through.

I'm the OP. Now I have lost 33 lbs since that original post. I still want to lose another 30, gradually.
I have been taking Belviq for about a week and feel more bloated and have no decrease in appetite. I do have some dizziness and feel groggy... Will that stop and will the bloated feeling go away? Thanks.
