Be Very Cautious Mixing Alcohol With Viibryd!! (Page 5)

Updated

This is a warning to you all... A little bit about me first: I'm 6'3" and only 130 pounds. Naturally I am very susceptible to side effects of any drug. I also didn't have my first taste of alcohol until October 2011, which is when I turned 23.

Throughout November 2011 I took Cymbalta. I also drank occasionally, but not often and not much. Cymbalta gave me a lot side effects such as an upset stomach, dizzyness, inability to sleep, etc. About mid-December I switched to Prozac, and took it through February. Throughout this time I drank a lot. Very often, and sometimes I'd get incredibly drunk, but I didn't have any bad experiences with mixing Prozac and alcohol. At the beginning of March 2012 I started taking Viibryd because Prozac wasn't giving me the results I desired. The first time I drank while taking Viibryd was on March 14th. That night was also my first and only ride in an ambulance. I drank a good bit of alcohol that night, but it wasn't the most I've ever drank. I also drank a little too fast. I ended up throwing up everything, then stomach juices, then dry heaving all the way to the hospital.

Since then I've only gotten drunk once while on Viibryd, and I did it slowly. I took about 10 shots of vodka but over a four hour period. I didn't feel any bad effects that night, and thought that maybe if I was just careful with my drinking that I could still get drunk while taking Viibryd. But the next day I was miserable. After havingstopped drinking at 11pm the night before, I was still drunk at 8am and unable to drive. The entire day I was sick and on the verge of passing out. I couldn't function at all. And the effects even carried over slightly to the following day.

I would just like to warn you all. It wouldn't suprise me at all if someone could end up dead due to an accident of mixing Viibryd and alcohol...

I take hydrocodone also and have just been prescribed this rx due to sdd and ptsd. after trying Zoloft and Cymbalta. I drink occaisionally and like it. to read these posts scare me into not wanting to take it. How does the hydrocodone and the viibryd work together?

That's part of the problem. As you rightly point out, almost all medications come with warnings not to drink alcohol - but the consequences of drinking on one medicine vs. another can be quite different. People prescribed medication with an anti-alcohol warning usually have little more information to go on than that - will it just damage my liver a little more than normal - or will it kill me? A big difference.

Actually vyybrid gives you a dose of seretonin in your gut and intestinal track. (Why I taking it). So I'm sure if you don't overly NEED that dose it might make you feel a bit nauseous or mess with your weight. Without it every morning I am sick the whole day, it would probably have the opposite effect in whomever is receiving a large un- needed dose.

I was on Wellbutrin for 8 years and switched to Viibryd. After about 6 months, my doctor increased by dosage to 40 mg. Although I didn't realize it at the time, this was when the side effects began for me. Migraine headaches, nausea and diarrhea. These side effects where intensified any time I had more than 2 beers or 2 glasses of wine, although I hadn't realized the relation until this past week. The migraines and nausea were too much for me to handle. I stopped Viibryd and switched back to Wellbutrin. But the withdrawals from this medication have been outrageous. Mood lability, migraines, nausea, crazy realistic dreams/nightmares. I'm on day 3 of the withdrawals and all I can hope is that it gets better from here.

The only thing that raises blood alcohol content (BAC) is more alcohol.

10 shots of vodka is more than any sane human being should drink in a 24 HOUR period! Let alone to be consumed by somebody on psychotropic drugs! BEcareful kids!

Viibryd is the only anti/ depressant I've ever taken that doesn't make me fat.
I should say I
Not only suffer depression but severe anxiety disorder so much so I disabled.
Vibrid has allowed me to
Leave the house , drive and live an almost
Normal
Life after 30
Years of suffering. I also take klonopin as needed because my panic attacks are unbearable and so intense
I almost pass out.
Between the two drugs I'm a functioning person. Now if I could only get out of the abusive relationship I am in I could have a life worth living.
Thanks for the read. Good luck to us all.

I've been on Viibryd for almost over a month now and it helps my depression tremendously, however.....I have terrible side effects. My anxiety is at the same level but the symptoms are different. I find myself being very confused, forgetting things, forgetting how to do everyday things as if I'm a toddler and sometimes I'm not sure what's real and what's not. I feel disconnected and disoriented. I feel like I'm going to loose control and honestly, I'm very scared and just want to cry. It helps depression and I have more energy but I also feel crazy like I'm loosing my grip on reality. I have no appetite either. It helped a lot at first but now I don't know if I should just wait it out and see if the side effects go away or if I should switch. Note that I've been looking for the right medication for years and it's getting very annoying to never feel ok. Any ideas? Anyone else feel like a mental patient?

Hi, there. Thanks di much for sharing. It hrlpd others.
Sorry about the weight gain. In my research of how this med works, needful serotonin should put stability in mood to inhibit various spikes...which is what happened to me. I've lost some weight since the med filters the whacko cravings. I do not have severe depression, but facing some life changes, and have never taken any anti depressant till now. Doc thought it could lift me at my age. In summary, if there is opposite result, Viibryd may not the one that helps the other person. I'd hate to zombie out myself. Please update us!

Talk to your Dr. your having side effects and it's probably not for you, especially the suicide thoughts and major depression. Take wellbutrin, it helps you lose weight.

10 shots of vodka over a 4 hour period would not constitute drinking slowly for me and I'm 6'2" and 220 lbs. This is a warning to you...you drink too much!

DO NOT drink while on this medication. I thought I could do it with this one since I did it with Citalopram but I was very wrong. It makes your anxiety 20 times worse than it was before you were even on the medication. I was so stupid. Alcohol is not worth your sanity. I had one beer on Sunday and had to go home and hide because I had a massive panic attack.

My fiance was prescribed Viibryd, and took a drug panel which showed Valium. I know for a fact he hasn't taken this, so the doctor asked him to quit taking it. He has until this next week for it to get out of his system or he will be dismissed as a patient at the other doctor's office. We have even contacted the makers of Viibryd and they can't tell us anything. This is so stupid and it would be different if he had taken them. Can anyone tell us what to do? He is also on prob. and we can only pray what comes of that.

I have been on Viibryd for five weeks. I would like to share my experience in case it helps anyone..I am a 38 yr. old female, 5'6" 155 lb. I was previously on Lexapro but it caused me to gain weight like 15 pounds! Then cymbalta but that I had a hard time urinating and it caused constipation. So I got an evaluation done called Genesight, where they take a q-tip of saliva and analyze your DNA with other medications. There were only four I could use with out a lot of side effects or "safely" is how the diagnostic words it.....However, I have had more side effects with Viibryd than any other and I didn't know how many I had until I came across this list of them. I noticed that my allergies increased (the thing is I get allergy shots for almost a year now so they were almost not an issue), I have had to use my inhaler again which is something I only need to do like once a year usually, I have had a sharp pain in my chest two times, which at the time I just shrugged off as maybe stress, but mostly if I drink and I mean just a couple sips of wine. I get these awful almost like I can hear the dizzy spell go through my head, like nothing I've ever experience before. And when I try to fall asleep on a night where I had a little wine (and when I say little I mean a little, the other night I maybe got four sips in before the spell hit) Anyway, when I try to fall asleep and it's always when I am first dosing off, I have nightmares but they are the kind where you know that you are sleeping and all you want to do is wake up so you try to yell or move but you are paralyzed. These dreams happen and the other night I knew it was from the 2-4 sips of wine, so I, in my dream I thought to myself just relax it will go away once you get into a deeper sleep. And it did, but still!!!! It's just something I don't want to go through and then with all my other symptoms I am going to talk to my Doctor. I honestly thought of just not ever drinking, which would stink around holidays but whatever...But one of the dizzy spells happened after using my inhaler. I have a total of like 7 side effects that I just shrugged off not knowing it was the medication. Now this list of side effects comes from a non profit organization that helps people get off any medication with bad withdraw effects. That's the other weird thing I can't really find a detailed list of side effects from the makers of viibryd. Anyway, here is the link to the side effect list that was very helpful for me in deciding I am going to switch medicines.

I have been on viibryd a few weeks. Still on 20. I have had a few drinks while on it with no apparent alcohol related side effects. But I am over 200 lbs so a few drinks over an hour is not much for me. Funny thing is I have much less desire to drink, and that for me is a good thing.

I've been a drinker for years, and started Viibryd a month ago after it became obvious that Zoloft had stopped working (after 8 years on it). I didn't see the warning on Viibryd about alcohol until this morning, and have been drinking my usual amount since starting Viibryd (a couple beers or a glass of wine each night, lots more on the weekends). Long story short, no problems here that I've noticed. The warning I saw this morning worried me about having a medical emergency due to my drinking, but it sounds like it's more of killer hangovers/nausea/etc. Interestingly enough, I did get drunk on my birthday a couple days ago, and had terrible restless legs when I went to bed. I suspected it may have had to do with the Viibryd, but I took 12.5mg of Xanax and was able to sleep well.

I am having the crazy stomach issues though: constipation for 3-4 days, diarrhea with urgency (like need to find a bathroom ASAP when the cramps start coming). As for the depression.....I feel like a new person! Motivated, great mood, far less irritable. I'm hopeful it stays this way. But based on the warning, I'm definitely going to cut back on the booze. No more than 1 or 2 per night going forward. It's just not worth it.
