Be Very Cautious Mixing Alcohol With Viibryd!! (Page 3) (Top voted first)

Updated

This is a warning to you all... A little bit about me first: I'm 6'3" and only 130 pounds. Naturally I am very susceptible to side effects of any drug. I also didn't have my first taste of alcohol until October 2011, which is when I turned 23.

Throughout November 2011 I took Cymbalta. I also drank occasionally, but not often and not much. Cymbalta gave me a lot side effects such as an upset stomach, dizzyness, inability to sleep, etc. About mid-December I switched to Prozac, and took it through February. Throughout this time I drank a lot. Very often, and sometimes I'd get incredibly drunk, but I didn't have any bad experiences with mixing Prozac and alcohol. At the beginning of March 2012 I started taking Viibryd because Prozac wasn't giving me the results I desired. The first time I drank while taking Viibryd was on March 14th. That night was also my first and only ride in an ambulance. I drank a good bit of alcohol that night, but it wasn't the most I've ever drank. I also drank a little too fast. I ended up throwing up everything, then stomach juices, then dry heaving all the way to the hospital.

Since then I've only gotten drunk once while on Viibryd, and I did it slowly. I took about 10 shots of vodka but over a four hour period. I didn't feel any bad effects that night, and thought that maybe if I was just careful with my drinking that I could still get drunk while taking Viibryd. But the next day I was miserable. After havingstopped drinking at 11pm the night before, I was still drunk at 8am and unable to drive. The entire day I was sick and on the verge of passing out. I couldn't function at all. And the effects even carried over slightly to the following day.

I would just like to warn you all. It wouldn't suprise me at all if someone could end up dead due to an accident of mixing Viibryd and alcohol...

I really liked Viibryd but stopped when I couldn't control the weight gain. 20 pounds in 3 months with no other changes to diet or exercise. My doctor said it's very rare and I must be one of the unlucky ones but I see lots of complaints on the internet about it. My stomach felt bloated almost all the time. I titrrated off just two days ago and have lost 2 pounds. Praying I go back to normal.

That's part of the problem. As you rightly point out, almost all medications come with warnings not to drink alcohol - but the consequences of drinking on one medicine vs. another can be quite different. People prescribed medication with an anti-alcohol warning usually have little more information to go on than that - will it just damage my liver a little more than normal - or will it kill me? A big difference.

Actually vyybrid gives you a dose of seretonin in your gut and intestinal track. (Why I taking it). So I'm sure if you don't overly NEED that dose it might make you feel a bit nauseous or mess with your weight. Without it every morning I am sick the whole day, it would probably have the opposite effect in whomever is receiving a large un- needed dose.

10 shots of vodka is more than any sane human being should drink in a 24 HOUR period! Let alone to be consumed by somebody on psychotropic drugs! BEcareful kids!

Viibryd is the only anti/ depressant I've ever taken that doesn't make me fat.
I should say I
Not only suffer depression but severe anxiety disorder so much so I disabled.
Vibrid has allowed me to
Leave the house , drive and live an almost
Normal
Life after 30
Years of suffering. I also take klonopin as needed because my panic attacks are unbearable and so intense
I almost pass out.
Between the two drugs I'm a functioning person. Now if I could only get out of the abusive relationship I am in I could have a life worth living.
Thanks for the read. Good luck to us all.

I've been on Viibryd for almost over a month now and it helps my depression tremendously, however.....I have terrible side effects. My anxiety is at the same level but the symptoms are different. I find myself being very confused, forgetting things, forgetting how to do everyday things as if I'm a toddler and sometimes I'm not sure what's real and what's not. I feel disconnected and disoriented. I feel like I'm going to loose control and honestly, I'm very scared and just want to cry. It helps depression and I have more energy but I also feel crazy like I'm loosing my grip on reality. I have no appetite either. It helped a lot at first but now I don't know if I should just wait it out and see if the side effects go away or if I should switch. Note that I've been looking for the right medication for years and it's getting very annoying to never feel ok. Any ideas? Anyone else feel like a mental patient?

DO NOT drink while on this medication. I thought I could do it with this one since I did it with Citalopram but I was very wrong. It makes your anxiety 20 times worse than it was before you were even on the medication. I was so stupid. Alcohol is not worth your sanity. I had one beer on Sunday and had to go home and hide because I had a massive panic attack.

I have been on Viibryd for five weeks. I would like to share my experience in case it helps anyone..I am a 38 yr. old female, 5'6" 155 lb. I was previously on Lexapro but it caused me to gain weight like 15 pounds! Then cymbalta but that I had a hard time urinating and it caused constipation. So I got an evaluation done called Genesight, where they take a q-tip of saliva and analyze your DNA with other medications. There were only four I could use with out a lot of side effects or "safely" is how the diagnostic words it.....However, I have had more side effects with Viibryd than any other and I didn't know how many I had until I came across this list of them. I noticed that my allergies increased (the thing is I get allergy shots for almost a year now so they were almost not an issue), I have had to use my inhaler again which is something I only need to do like once a year usually, I have had a sharp pain in my chest two times, which at the time I just shrugged off as maybe stress, but mostly if I drink and I mean just a couple sips of wine. I get these awful almost like I can hear the dizzy spell go through my head, like nothing I've ever experience before. And when I try to fall asleep on a night where I had a little wine (and when I say little I mean a little, the other night I maybe got four sips in before the spell hit) Anyway, when I try to fall asleep and it's always when I am first dosing off, I have nightmares but they are the kind where you know that you are sleeping and all you want to do is wake up so you try to yell or move but you are paralyzed. These dreams happen and the other night I knew it was from the 2-4 sips of wine, so I, in my dream I thought to myself just relax it will go away once you get into a deeper sleep. And it did, but still!!!! It's just something I don't want to go through and then with all my other symptoms I am going to talk to my Doctor. I honestly thought of just not ever drinking, which would stink around holidays but whatever...But one of the dizzy spells happened after using my inhaler. I have a total of like 7 side effects that I just shrugged off not knowing it was the medication. Now this list of side effects comes from a non profit organization that helps people get off any medication with bad withdraw effects. That's the other weird thing I can't really find a detailed list of side effects from the makers of viibryd. Anyway, here is the link to the side effect list that was very helpful for me in deciding I am going to switch medicines.

Hey y'all! Here to share my experience with Viibryd...and drinking. I'm 5'8'' and 205lbs, currently on the 20mg dose and have been on it for almost two weeks.

I honestly don't feel the need to drink anymore! Sometimes I do want one when I'm with my family (whom ALL drink daily), but when I'm by myself, there is no urge to drink like there used to be. I had one drink while on the 10mg dose and it just made me extremely tired.

The first week on Viibryd was awesome, tons of energy, general happy feeling, but when I went up to the 20mg dose (which happened to coincide with PMS, so that could be to blame) I started to feel kinda blah. Basically not as awesome feeling as I did the first week. I am going to give it a full month, just to be sure it's not just PMS making me cranky and irritable. Before Viibryd, I was an emotional eater, but I've found that since starting it, my appetite's actually decreased. I can't wait to go back to the doctor in a couple weeks for a weigh in!

Now to the downside of the medication...lots of diarrhea for the first 3-5 days but I've always had tummy troubles, even before the medication, so I'm used to it. I have found that I have less of an urge to go most of the time though. I feel like this medicine makes it a little more difficult to pee, but it's gotten better the longer I'm on it. I do feel dizzy upon standing sometimes but not enough for me to care. I had lots of trouble sleeping for the first 4 days, but since then my sleep pattern has gone back to normal and I believe it's thanks to Viibryd for making it easier to get up in the morning. I'll try to remember to do an update after I go back to my doc for a check-up.

I'm sorry about what you experienced, however, there are reasons that almost all medications carry warnings about drinking alcohol, while taking them.

It is well known that it will intensify the side effects of most medications and yes, in some cases, that can be life threatening.

Have you spoken to your doctor? You should do so, just to be on the safe side, in case you've done any permanent damage.

I am on my 11th day on viibyrd, at first I was having very bad dizzy spells but they seem to have gone away but last night I woke up very sweaty and shakey and had a pretty bad panic attack... Anyone else experience anything like this?

Thanks for the response! I was on celexa for two years mainly for severe OCD/intrusive thoughts and anxiety disorder and it ended up getting worse, so I got switched to this medicine! Hoping it takes away my negative thinking!

Thank you so much for the response. It's nice to know your not alone in the world and your not the only one feeling a certain way. My biggest problem is feeling so alone and like I'm the only one experiencing the anxiety, I have a three year old daughter as well and I suffered from ppd but never told anyone about it and held it in for two years which had a lot to do with my anxiety building up and getting worse. I do think viibyrd is helping and I even had a couple beers last night for my birthday and so far feel fine just having a little trouble sleeping. Have you ever heard of cognitive therapy? I read about it a lot online but haven't much idea as to what it is or how it works?

I did initially feel very shaky- loopy, now (I started about 9 days ago taking 20 mgs) I wake up extremely shaky, and I remain the same way all day. I have never been like that nor do I want to continue to feel this way.

I've been on Viibryd for 3 months now and have never taken any kind of anti-depressant or anxiety medication before. The first two weeks of were MISERABLE!! I didn't get any of the stomach issues, mine was mainly TERRIBLE panic attacks. I've never had a panic attack before and these were of the epic kind. I was"lucky" enough to have one in the office of my therapist so was able to work on clues or signs of an oncoming one. Other than that, I've had no issues with Viibryd. I feel better. Now, my therapist did tell me there is a period when on Viibryd that it doesn't feel like anything has changed - stagnant. So I expected to feel like, "eehh, this isn't doing anything for me", but will continue taking as planned. I do, however, drink on the medication. Not a lot, and my therapist said that the main side effect of drinking, is the increase of anxiety and mood swings the next day. I did notice that my tolerance level is WAY WAY lower than when I wasn't on the mediciation. Maybe that is why people are getting sick. It wasn't high to begin with but I could drink two beers and not be drunk. Not the case anymore, geez! So becareful. Also, it has warnings EVERYWHERE to NOT TAKE cold medicines with Viibryd. My therapist warned me as well. It has a TERRIBLE reaction and will make you violently sick. Hope this helps people :)

I've had problems now twice with drinking alcohol and Viibryd. Last time, I had two shots of tequila over three hours, and driving was super hard (it felt like I was in a spaceship with things rushing by on either side). Then I had horrible almost psychotic dreams each time. And in fact, since starting Viibryd, my dreams have been terrible almost every night (which was never true before).

People mentioned weight gain, but that's not happening for me. In fact, I eat a little and get super full really quickly.

As far as the benefits, I notice less obsessional thinking--like the recent painful things that have happened feel further away in time. I notice I'm getting more angry (which the doctor says is great--that I'm not depressing). I went up to 40 mg, but went back down to 20 mg when I didn't feel any improvement from the larger dose.

I stopped taking Viibryd because it caused some really strange thoughts - intrusive thoughts that made me feel crazy ... And my sleep was suffering terribly. My doctor put me on Effexor XR, which I took for many years, with great success. It is working for me again, thankfully. I am hoping to be able to go off of all meds once my son is 2 years old or so. Maybe even before that ... Viibryd was not for me, after all. With any antidepressant, you need to be careful how much alcohol you consume. Effexor is probably the easiest to deal with. I have gone out once while being on Effexor, and I didn't have any ill effects. I drank quite a bit, too. Good luck to you all!
