Bad Reaction To Metoprolol Xl

Had been taking Cozaar 100 mg, which had my bp under control (ranging from 115/78 to 128/82). Also started back at the gym 2 1/2 months ago. Now up to regular cardio routine totalling 150 mins/ week. No shortness of breath or other problems. I asked the doc if I could step down to Cozaar 50 mg, as the 100 mg was making me feel like my heart ached from time to time. Doc changed to 50 mg Cozaar, but added Metorolol XL 25 mg. First day, I had a bad reaction: dizziness, disoriented. 2 days later, still didn't feel right. Took my bp and it was 150/87 and continued to rise. Went to the ER. They told me I was having a panic attack. Doc ordered a dobutamine stress echo test. Have had mild chest pain and some shortness of breath at the gym on exertion. Passed with flying colors. But bp has remained high in the 140s/low 90s, 2 weeks after the spike. Even though I have gone back to Cozaar 100 mg. Wondering if I had some kind of allergic reaction to the Metropolol or if it triggered allergy-related asthma. I have read one very similar account to my experience. Has anyone also experienced something like this, where bp increased? Doc does not seem to have an answer.

It sounds more like side effects of the Metoprolol, it does this to some people and yes, it can actually cause elevated BP in some instances, which is contrary to what it is supposed to do.

Yes, still being monitored. Trying to get bp back down to where it was before Metropolol, using Cozaar 100 mg. bp is slowly coming down. And slowly starting to feel like myself again. But it has been almost 3 weeks now.

I am very sorry about what you are suffering through, Metoprolol and similar medications have caused problems like this for many people.

When I used it, I had every side effect they list and some they don't. I refused to keep taking it.

I really hope your BP returns to a better level, very soon.
