Bactrim - Lingering Side Effects

Took bactrim for l-1/2 days. Blood sugar plummetted, severe GI problems, anxiety through the roof! Immediately stopped taking. This was 3 months ago. Side effects continue although slowly improving. Am taking baby steps toward recovering from this awful, poisonous drug. Has anybody else had such a difficult recovery from this?

It is very unusual for side effects to linger for such a long period of time, especially after taking just a few doses of the medication.

There is an article on Medline Plus regarding drug induced low blood sugar, which does list Bactrim as being one of the medications known to cause such an issue. It's other side effects are listed as possibly including nausea, diarrhea, and loss of appetite.

That said, I also had a very bad experience with it, but I was one dose away from finishing my course of treatment, when it manifested, I developed a severe skin rash and hives, on top of insomnia, and elevated heart rate, and it took several weeks for all of it to clear up. It's not an experience I wish to repeat.

What types of symptoms are you still experiencing? Are you on any other medications?

VerFree (# 1) -Thank you for your reply. Yes, I was taking another med -Diltiazem for HBP and have since found it has many of the same side effects as Bactrim. I have discontinued use of both drugs and side effects are slowly improving. My pharmacist told me that the red blotchy skin I'm experiencing is due to vaso-dilation which is a side effect of both of these drug. So it looks like I got hit with a double whammy! Got more info from my pharmacist in one visit than out of 3 visits to Dr. Also, have found several sites where people have taken only 1 or 2 Bactrims resulting in long term side effects. Very glad you are feeling better after several weeks of misery!
