Bactrim Side Effects (Page 7)

I am curious if anyone else has had any of these side effects from taking bactrim. My mouth is so swollen with blisters all inside my mouth.....now it has started to affect my private area as well with same symptoms. I cant eat and it burns all day long. I only took 4 pills when this started. Please help if you can.

Just curious because I am experiencing the same thing. Did the blisters on your genitals come all at once or over a period of a couple of days burst and leave open sores ? I'm worried about herpes but believe it is the Bactrim.

I just went through everything you stated as of last night. The doctors at the E.R. stated that I shouldn't take anymore of the Bactrim DS. I thought it was the combination of Toradal and the Bactrim DS that caused these symptoms. Hopefully we get through this quick cause I feel like crap!!!!

I took bactrim for a salivary infection. I have horrible mouth sores, my tongue is all swollen, and my gums are all inflamed. I stopped it at 9 days..... should have stopped way before. This is worse then the salivary infection.

Look up boullous drug eruptions. I have allergies to various medications. This (Bactrim) builds in your system. Each time you take it your reaction will likely get worse. My first experience it took 1 1/2 weeks for the blistering to begin. The second time it was within 12 hours. I called my PCP. He took it very seriously and told me to stop the medication immediately. It can cause sloughing of skin and then severe skin infections. Evidently he had seen some cases because he did not mess around with it at all. He immediately knew what I was talking about and put me on a different antibiotic and still followed up on me the next day! And yes ladies it is not in your imagination. I too had other lasting side effects as well. He will no longer prescribe sulfa drugs for me. Please just trust your instinct.....you know your own body better than anyone. Hope this helps.

I recently reacted twice from the use of Bactrim so now I definitively know I'm allergic. I had the sore mouth and the painful vajayjay... The first time it was horrific and I ended up at the OB on emergency. The second time I took one dose of Bactrim and realized that this is the problem so I stopped immediately, unfortunately the pain didn't. I'm not a Dr but after 3 days of severe pain I was at the end of my rope and applied "Kanka" (mouth sore medicine) down there and let me tell ya I heard the angels sing! (Burns like a b**** at first). Praise the Lord the pain was gone and now I had some way to get rid of the pain. Again, I'm not a Dr, nor am I telling you to do this but it worked for me!

I started taking 800-160 mg of bactrim (which was prescribed by a PA at a walk-in clinic) due to swelling around my eye from a large zit on my forehead. Took one in the evening, woke up next morning with my throat feeling very tight, slight difficulty breathing and the worst headache I have ever had in my life. Went to work and eventually went home early because I felt like I had the flu as my body & head felt horrible...felt dizzy and like I was going throw up. I continued to take dosages into the next day but also drank a lot more water...it didn't help. The original side effects actually went away but then my throat become extremely sore and very hard to swallow food, later that next day I then found it almost impossible to urinate from extreme pain down there. Called my doctor the next day and was told to stop immediately, and consider myself allergic to bactrim....um, ok. Two days later, the pain in urinating is getting a little better but now my mouth has several open sores. I am wondering what will happen next as it has been 48 hours since I took my last dosage. Horrific drug, for me at least, and yes...the mouth sores came to me as well.

Took Bactrim 14 days....fever, chills, tongue covered in white and red bumps, layers if white bumps, extreme fatigue and left eye extremely red. I am on my third day of not taking it and my tongue is returning back to normal and I have not had a fever. I'm still feeling very weak.

I too took Bactrim and the tissue of my labia became painful, red & eventually peeled off. Stop taking it immediately!

Hello ladies, I'm taking Bactrim because I have a diabetic ulcer. I have to take two for 10 days. The first two nights I woke up in the morning with severe very painful muscle spasms in my left leg. Then on the second night I woke up at about 3 a.m. to use the restroom and I was having very painful spasms in my arm. Then on the third day I woke up in the morning with a rash on my left arm (near the upper forearm closer to the elbow region) that was pink, round and similar to ringworm with blisters on it. It was very itchy and I didn't have any of these problems until I started taking the Bactrim. It can also alter your attitude and make you very short-tempered. It made me very irritable to the point where I did not want to be bothered by my children or my grandchildren. Because I've been diabetic and had this store on my leg for two years, my doctor kept telling me to put Bactrim ointment on it and it'll go away (without getting any kind of skin culture). It never went away. So I originally started taking Bactrim because I started to see a wound care specialist and she took a culture. Two days later my legion was tested+ for staph infection. She told me that everyone has staph in their body anyway but if your body's immune system is down from any kind of illness and you get cut, the little tiny thing can turn into a staph infection.

Oh gosh. BACTRIM!.. because of this drug, and the reaction being misdiagnosed, I was in the ER twice within 24 hours. Severe headache, heart skipping beats, throwing up, rash all over body, swollen and red face.......ER first thought it was sepsis because of the way I looked. I ended up having to wear a heart monitor for a month. I have never been through anything like this in my life and I am 66. Never been in the hospital, never had heart issues.....oh well, it has all resolved itself now but lets just say it wreaked havoc on my body. I can never take a sulfa drug again. And it is true, that the 2nd times is worse than the first. First time was on Christmas Day...broken out, etc. Came off it but 10 days later when in ER for heart stuff (caused by Bactrim) the Dr in ER didn't believe I was allergic to Bactrim so she gave it to me AGAIN.....and that's when the real fiasco began. The second reaction apparently played off the first. Why would I allow a Dr to give me Bactrim a second time? I was SO sick...in ER, couldn't hold my head up.....too sick to even think straight and bought into her reason why it couldn't be Bactrim. Too sick to think. Well, I was right, she was wrong. Took 6 months for everything to resolve itself.....allergist says no doubt about it, it is Bactrim. Thinking of seeing an attorney. Just saying...

I was prescribed Bactrim DS 800/160 for a boil in my armpit. I've been on 2 bid for only 3 days. I developed a blistering rash and my legs and feet are swollen. Should I stop taking this?

I apologize, but if your doctor told you that blisters/lesions that occur around the onset of taking Bactrim, most likely, he is NOT a physician. Bactrim and other antibiotics (abx) can cause thrush in the mouth, caused by an overgrowth of yeast, b/c the abx not only destroy the bad flora, but also the good. I called my doc and told him I had thrush, so he called in meds for that, but the pain was not controlled. I made an apt, and when he saw my mouth, he said, "OMG, you must NEVER take Bactrim again. He said these "blisters" are actually burns. My mouth is covered, but the worst is under my tongue. I had a white flap of tissue (lesion) that would begin to slough off during the day. However, by the next morning, a new flap was back. The pain when that flap sloughed off was unbearable. My PCP said this was an allergic response that could have easily become an anaphylactic response. When you have swelling and lesions in your mouth, you have to know that your airway is right there. so pls don't tell anyone this is normal. Our body can repair itself, but if we're dead, it's too late. Hope this helps someone. Don't call your doc if you have blisters/lesions in your mouth. Make an appt.

Doxycyline hyclate is often a viable alternative for Bac trim. Much less side effects.

Yep...blisters inside the mouth was one of many issues I had with the drug...could only last two days and my doctor said I was obviously allergic to this sulfa drug.

I had the same thing happen to me. In 2012 I had an allergic reaction to septra and the doctor swore up and down that i had herpes because the amount of blisters on my mouth and vagina and I knew for a fact I didn't have herpes because I've been with the same man for 5 years and I was the first person he's ever been with but they pounded it in my head so much that I believed them. Now it's 2017 and 3 days ago I got Bactrim gave to me for a sinus infection and I took 2 pills and my lips and vaginal area started to swell and itch and I had the same rash appear as before so come to find out I was having another allergic reaction and after test and all that, come to find out I'm allergic to sulpha drugs and never had herpes just like I tried to tell the doctor. So if they are trying to tell you that DO NOT BELIEVE THEM. I've had very bad depressing self-esteem issues about my self since 2012 when they tried to say it was herpes and I've spend all these years trying to get over the fact that I was going to have to live with the thought that I was always gonna have something for my whole life and I never even had it to begin with. I DO NOT RECOMMEND BACTRIM OR ANY SULPHA DRUG TO ANYBODY!!! The side affects and allergic reactions are way worse then the problem you had to begin with to get them prescribed to you. I wish I would have just dealt with my sinus infection because now I can barley walk, I get so scared to use the restroom because of how painful it is when the urine hits a open blister. When I swallow food it hurts very bad from the blisters in my throats (I've had to eat nothing but soft foods), my lips are all swollen, cracked and raw feeling on the inside and I have big red very sensitive rashes on my sides, hands, in between my fingers, inner thighs and on my bottom in between my buttocks checks. I would rather deal with a simple aggravating sinus infection any day then take this medication and have to deal with not being able to walk or even play and hold my 2 year old daughter. I have to put numbing ointment on my vaginal area every time before I use the restored and let it sit for a couple minutes to numb just so using the restroom won't be as painful when I urinate.

They also told me I had Steven johnsons syndrom. But mine isn't just a few blisters it's horrible. If it doesn't get better in the next 2 days I have to go back and get admitted for a day or so to get fluids and things.

Omg i am having an exactly similar experience! So relieved to research and find out I was not alone in this. I was prescribed Bactrim Ds for a UTI, and by the time I was near my final dose I thought I was getting a yeast infection with a swollen vag area and severe pain, fever, trouble swallowing etc.. My Dr. called me in a prescription for Diflucan for a yeast infection, I skipped my final dose of Bactrim, and I noticed next day what I thought was yeast was not - I had very painful patches of reddened raised areas down there, no odor-just complete shock! And worse yet, it burned like fire when i peed! My Dr. was awesome and knew right away I was having an allergy and told me to take Benedryl & drink lots of water. I already was starting prednisone for lupus which was a plus for the allergic reaction. In the meantime, my long time boyfriend and I were both looking at each other like "this better not be an sti!" We both knew we were free and clear so until all the proper diagnoses, and info from the doc, that was really a whole other stresser! Bactrim should have a warning label, be taken off the market or a legal suit needs to happen. This is horrible!
