Borderline Diabetes Medications (Top voted first)
UpdatedI HAVE BEEN ON METFORMIN 500 MG ER SINCE
JAN. 15TH. MY LAST BLOOD TEST IN JAN. SHOWED MY GLUCOSE LEVEL WAS BORDERLINE FOR DIABETES SO MY PHYSICIAN PRESCIBED THIS TO SEE IF IT HELPS MY GLUCOSE LEVELS. I REPEATED A B/T LAST WEEK (5 WKS. LATER) TO SEE IF THERE ARE ANY CHANGES IN MY BLOOD LEVEL AND AM AWAITING THE RESULTS FROM MY DOCTOR. BEING VERY CONCERNED ABOUT GETTING THIS DISEASE, I WAS CURIOUS WHETHER THIS MEDICATION CAN HELP WITH MY RECENT WEIGHT LOSS OF CLOSE TO 7 LBS. SINCE STARTING, WHICH IS GREAT AND WONDERED WITH THE BORDERLINE B/T EARLIER, I HAVE FOR SEVERAL MONTHS CUT OUT PRACTICALLY ALL SUGAR (INC. SWEETS AND JUNK FOOD), BUT CERTAIN GROCERY ITEMS I TRY TO BUY WITH LOW MG. OF SUGAR. COULD YOU SHARE WITH ME HOW MANY GMS. OF SUGAR ONE SHOULD CONSUME A DAY, WHO IS WATCHING THEIR WEIGHT AND BLOOD SUGAR NUMBERS?? I WOULD BE MOST APPRECIATIVE OF YOUR ANSWERS TO THESE QUESTIONS I HAVE PRESENTED TO YOU. THANK YOU SO MUCH.

Now, on the sugar, there are two different kinds that you have to pay attention to, when you are diabetic or borderline diabetic. There are simple and complex sugars and both affect your blood sugar differently.
The complex sugars are what you get out of regular foods, such as bread, pasta, rice and etc. You really can't avoid these ones and they aren't the type that are most dangerous to diabetics.
When you eat something with the complex sugars, it doesn't give you the spike and sudden drop that you get with simple sugars. They help control your blood sugar and prevent the symptoms associated with the spikes and drops.
Simple sugars are the refined type, like you would find in candy, table sugar and most other junk foods. They are also found in fruit. These are more dangerous, because as I stated above, they cause a rise in your blood sugar, which doesn't last, resulting in sudden drops.
Now, as to how many grams you should eat, it really depends on the individual, which is where a personal Glucometer that you use at home to test on your own can come in handy.
For instance, my ex-husband was diabetic and by monitoring his diet, as well as using the glucometer to test his sugar levels regularly, we were able to discover that anything over 20grams, at any given meal or snack, was too much. His sugar would raise to dangerous levels, but if we kept it around 20grams or less, then it wouldn't do that.
As to your weight loss, it is common for people with diabetes or those who are borderline to gain weight. The spikes in your blood sugar tend to make you feel hungry, even if you have eaten recently, so you end up eating more than you should. So, taking a medication to help balance it better, coupled with your improved diet, is going to help with some weight loss.
Are there any other questions or comments?
I lost 28 lbs in three months since I have been on metformin, but I wonder about the side effects. Peggy copeland
