Sorry. I'm not quite sure how old my box and little jar are. I'm thinking it's probably from the 1980's...? My mother bought them for me years ago. I think she got them at a health food store. She always called it miracle cream, and I tend to agree. This is my last one. It's almost gone, and I was really hoping to find some more. I have been searching for a couple of years now and was excited to find this forum last night.

Barb, do you have a newer box than mine? I bought mine in 2005. Maybe your ingredient is what I should be looking for if your box is after 2005.

My box of BGO lists one final ingredient that is missing from the June 28th post: 1% Undecylenic Acid which is an antifungal. If you find BGO or an equivalent I would like to know.

I bought the Calmoseptine Ointment as a substitute for the BGO. Well, it has some of the ingredients (Menthol, Zinc Oxide 20.625% and not 1% as in BGO, Calamine, Lanolin, and Phenol). This product isn't an antifungal and Antiseptic product like BGO. It's basically only an Antiseptic and skin protectant/moisture barrier according to the label. Sorry, I thought we had hit the jackpot.

Based on Lgw's last post, here are the properties of the various ingredients found in BGO:

Iodoform - disinfectant, helped relieve itching and irritation
Salicylic Acid - treats dry, rough, scaly, or excess skin caused by certain conditions
Sulphur (precipitated) - traditional method for treating various conditions such as psoriasis, eczema and acne
Zinc Oxide - used to treat minor skin irritations (eg, cuts, burns, and scrapes, poison ivy)
1% Phenol (liquified) - a common precursor to a large collection of drugs (such as Aspirin)
Calamine - used to treat itching and skin irritation caused by chicken pox, insect bites or stings, measles, eczema, sunburn, poison ivy, and other minor skin condition
Menthol - used topically to relieve minor pain
Petrolatum - used as a topical ointment, has lubricating and sun-blocking properties
Lanolin and Mineral Oil - can provide lubrication and ease inflammation. (p.s. did you know that Lanolin "is a greasy yellow substance secreted by the sebaceous glands of wool-bearing animals" (per Wikipedia) ?

With that said, it appears that an equivalent medication today would need to have disinfecting, soothing, moisturizing, pain-relieving, and anti-inflammatory properties. It’s no wonder people are still looking for this salve today!

If anybody has any leads as to where to find an equally effective product then please post here...

Has anyone been able to uncover the active ingredients in this ?? If you have an old container of it see if the ingredients are listed on it because there is a chance that a pharmacist can compound a custom mixture of it. I would really like to know what the ingredients were myself...

I have used BGO for over 50 years and still have a couple of new jars. I have ordered in the past from Calotabs directly purchasing 2 boxes (24) jars at a time and now I understand they have gone out of business. Can anyone help me find more?

I am searching for BBGO, too. Mom used it for all types of things and it worked. I will check out the Calmoseptine ointment that Tim said has the same ingredients. I will let you know it works miracles like BGO.

While cleaning out my bathroom this afternoon, I just found a new bottle of BGO still in the box. I must have bought this bottle over 25 years ago. A friend from college used it all the time and she had beautiful skin. I'm glad that I also still have 1/3 of an old jar.

BGO was wonderful. Please let me know if you find any, I want to buy it, or anything similar.

I ask a pharmasist about the BGO ointment and he said he wondered if it was taken off the market because of the mercury content?

Calmoseptine ointment has the same ingredients as BGO. I have recently purchased and tried it. I discovered it worked as well as BGO for me.

My mother still has her 1/3 full white (label has been long gone) jar. She got it from her mother, in Lexington, NC, and has had the same jar for over 30 years! It's a wonder ointment! Does anyone have a jar with a label listing ingredients? Also, we were always told BGO stood for Beamons Good Ointment - can anyone confirm? Thanks!

If Michael can list ingredients a compound pharmacy can reproduce the ointment. Any help, Michael?

Michael says he has an old container. Can he read the ingredients? Maybe there is something similar out there. I can't find this discontinued product either.
