Atenolol Headaches Different Pharmaceutical Brands
(Newest replies first)

Hi everyone. I've been a 25mg Atenolol user for 22 years. Recently, because of the shortage, I had to temporarily switch pharmacies to get my prescription. Four doses later the headaches started.
For the last month I have been having unrelenting headaches. I just can't shake it. It's pretty much constant. I've tried everything, thought of all the benign reasons why, and this is my last Hail Mary before I see my Dr and tell him I'm convinced I have a brain tumor. Pathetic but I am miserable.
Is it possible changing from one manufacturer to another who might use different inactive ingredients be the cause of these headaches? A sensitivity to something maybe?
I'm sure in the past my Atenolol has been switched up occasionally, but it's the last thing I can think of.
I hope this shortage is straightened out soon.
Thanks y'all!

Nikki, have you been taking it for high blood pressure? If so, have you checked your blood pressure levels recently?
Elevated blood pressure can also cause headaches, according to NIH warnings, they can also be a side effect of the medication itself.

As to what Ruth said, you can check with your pharmacy to see who manufactured the other ones you were taking, they should have record of it. That information may also help us get to the root of the problem.
Hi Nikki, sorry for your pain! Have you tried Metoprolol? I would definitely agree with your statement about medication change regarding a different manufacturer. I have experienced it and it is not good. I would try and request or find what you were taking before or generic brand. Metoprolol is what I take as a beta blocker for Angina. Good luck and don't think you have a tumor!
