Atenol/chlor 50-25 Mgtab
UpdatedI started on this drug about 3 months ago for mild high blood pressure and after about a month and half I noticed I was loosing a lot of my hair when I washed it and then noticed much more in my brush. Then others started noticing hair on my clothes all the time. I've read all I can find about this drug and do not find that to be one of the side effects. Has anyone else heard of this problem with this drug?

Atenolol is not that of a problem, I had been using that for the last 13 years, so far I did not had any major side effect other than a humming sound in the ear, but Chlortalidone is not known to me yet. Any comment out there.
I take the 100/25, and have been noticing the same problems. Have not really gave it a lot of thought, until now. Would like to know for sure if this is causing the problem??
Atenolol with Chlorthalidone is a medication commonly used to treat hypertension, in the U.S. it is commonly prescribed under the brand name Tenoretic.
That said, if you refer to our monograph for Atenolol, here:

And scroll down to the side effects, you will see hair loss IS listed, as well as dizziness, headache and nightmares.
Here is the link to information on Chlorthalidone:

If you are experiencing extreme hairloss, you should speak to your doctor immediately, they may be able to prescribe a different medication for you to try.
Have you contacted them, yet?
My wife has taken the Atenolol for about 15 years 50mg and has had several bouts of very high BP 170-190/100 plus and over the last year has discovered a large amount of hair loss, the drain has to be cleaned much more often. Hair loss has been reported, they call it rare. These high BP could be due to low sugar masked by Atenolol. Her Dr. gave her a large dose of the Ateno/Chlor 100mg -50 mg and set her ears to ringing non-stop for the last 6 weeks. This is another side affect to be avoided in older patients, as it is not reversible and will get worse over time.
I started taking Atenolol a year ago and over time have experienced MANY of the "rare" side effects. My hair began falling out and, ironically, my husband is a licensed Master Barber and has being doing my hair for 20 years and he noticed it as well. I no longer have ANY hair growth in my armpits and very little on my legs.
I have always worn my hair long and straight, so my husband cut quite a few inches off and layered it which made it appear thicker. Then we noticed recently my d**n hairline is receding!
He knows that many medications can have some effect on the hair and skin, but we never dreamed this kind of hair loss could be related to my meds. I have been being treated for depression and fatigue for about 6 years and the doctor knew that and he knew the other meds I am taking. Since starting this drug and gaining 40 pounds in less than 6 months, I'm on a supervised diet for the rapid weight gain. It isn't working.
So I got online last night and started searching and I was literally shocked to find that these symptoms are NOT quite so rare.
And I am fuming when I think that had I not figured out that the hair loss and possibly the rapid weight gain is most likely being caused by this drug, I might have continued taking it and I would be bald within a year.
Why was I not told by my doctor or pharmacist about this devastating side effect??? Can anyone else who has experienced this tell me if they were warned before beginning the medication and given the option of trying it? My previous GP and my psychiatrist have always explained the most serious side effects of any prescription they want me to try.
WHY WAS I NOT TOLD? WAS ANYONE ELSE TOLD?
Check your temperature under your right arm several times a day for a few days. If it is below 98.6 Find a doctor that can do medication for Wilsons Thyroid Syndrome. Most Dr.s will only check the TSH levels which range from 0.2 to 5.5 if its over 2.0 it causes other problems. TSH is the messenger that tells the Thyroid to make T3 hormone from T4 Hormone that is produced first. It gets rather complicated. It can also trigger Migraine headaches. I always wondered why most of the older ladies have very thin hair, now I know, its there heart medication.
Most all of the heart medications have this problem Beta Blockers and ACE inhibitors as well. ACE types are better than Beta Blockers,. There is one ACE type that is natural fish peptide that doesn't have these side effects and is over the counter.
Thanks for your reply and for reading my "rant"
I'll check into this before I go back to the doc. Last year, I was having some pretty bad gastric trouble... I was swollen and bloated and my stomach so distended I looked 9 months pregnant. I spent 5 days in the hospital having every hormone and gland test known to man done. The only thing that was found was that my adrenal gland levels were slightly low, but not enough to start taking steroids. I had a stress test prior to that and they found no problems at all. I was taking HCTZ at the time and my bp was fine for years and I tolerated HCTZ just fine. (This mystery was never really solved.) SO I have no clue why this new GP wanted to change my meds.
(... and I'm only 48 years young)
Thanks again.
Since I been taking Atenol/Chlor 50-25mg I started loosing my hair also. I knew it had to be the Atenol/Chlor that was taking my hair out. I have been taking this medication for 10 years. Thanks so much for sharing this information with others about this drug. Maybe the drug administration could do more research about this drug.
Can you provide the name of the fish peptide/over the counter medicicine that you talked about.
YES I HAVE EXPERIENCED MAJOR HAIR LOSS SINCE TAKING THIS DRUG. MY HAIR LONG AND HEALTHY ONE MINUTE AND IT SEEMS LIKE IT WAS COMING OUT IN CLUMPS THE NEXT. SINCE I CUT MY HAIR SHORT IT SEEMS TO DO BETTER WITH THE COMBINATION OF NOT USING ANY KIND OF HAIR CHEMICALS.
i take it too... no side effect accept
muscles feel tired...only day 5
yours sounds like possible thyroid problem....
Yes I'm dealing with the same thing hair is thinning real bad in the top of my head .But I didn't check to see until today that the medicine I'm on the side effort is hair loss ,so disappointed.
