Purbac 480 - My son is using Purbac 480, I need to know if it can cause damage to his liver, as he needs to take it for a long time. Recently I noticed that his color changed to yellow, we did a bloodtest and there were no liver damage on anything else. ## There has actually been some concern about using Purbac (Sulfamethoxazole + Trimethoprim), since it has been associated with both frequent mild allergic reactions and serious adverse effects, including Stevens-Johnson syndrome, myelosuppression, mydriasis, agranulocytosis, and severe liver damage (cholestatic hepatosis, hepatitis, liver necrosis, and fulminant liver failure). Having lap-band surgery in 1 week and in my pre-surgery test they determined I have a mild UTI infection today and gave me sulfameth/tmp ds tab. I have no symptoms or fever. Will this cause the surgeon to postpone my surgery? ## Is your surgeon aware that you are taking this medication when you filled out the initial paper work to have the procedure done? Usually, antibiotics like this one are only prescribed for up to 7 days or so to kill an infection, so it may end up that you finish taking the medication before your surgery date. It should be a priority though in my honest opinion, to inform the surgeon about it anyways just to be on the safe side. Reason being is that each and every surgeon and procedure they do has its own merits and pre or post op instructions, so there really is ...

And once expired, it begins to lose effectiveness and should not be used, because it increases the risk of developing antibiotic resistant bacteria.
