I was prescribed Keflex 500 mg - 4 times per day. I meant to grab a pain pill (I'm recovering from an open dislocation) and accidentally took a second dose of the Keflex instead. Should I be concerned? ## Never mind. I skipped the dose the next am & was blessed to not have any side effects. :-) ## Hello, Amy! How are you? It was actually worse to skip your next dose than it was to have doubled up on the one. Doubling up isn't really dangerous, since this is just an antibiotic and might just cause you to experience more side effects, such as nausea, dizziness and diarrhea than usual. But skipping a dose gives the bacteria a chance to repopulate and possibly develop antibiotic resistance. I know you can't change what's happened, but I wanted you to know for future refe...

I have a really bad toothache that I think is abscessed. Will Bactrim (sulfamethoxazole and trimethoprim) help treat the infection? ## Can Bactrim be used for a Tooth Infection? While Bactrim is effective against a range of bacterial infections, it is not typically the first-line antibiotic for treating tooth infections, which are often caused by anaerobic bacteria found in the oral cavity. These infections usually respond better to antibiotics that are specifically effective against the types of bacteria found in dental abscesses, such as penicillin, amoxicillin, or clindamycin, which are more traditionally prescribed by dentists. However, in cases where a patient cannot tolerate these first-line antibiotics or if the infection is caused by a bacteria that is known to be susceptible to...

Started out taking Flagyl, 2000 mg in one day......did not work....cultured and e-coli infection....given 10 days of Cipro.....still have burning and pressure....At wits end....leaving in two days for vacation........I seem to get these quite often..had fishy smell, took bath and bang, next day burning..... ## Hello, Rosie! How are you? I am sorry that you're so sick. If you have a fishy odor coming from your genital area, then that likely denotes that you also have a vaginal bacterial infection. Thus, you might be treating one, while the other is still raging gout of control, because you might not be taking the right medication for it. Have you consulted your gynecologist? The fact that things are erupting after a bath also points to that possibility. Have you had any discharge? Do...

does amox/k clav react adversely to dairy products? ## Hello, Cap21! How are you? No, there are no known issues between taking this antibiotic, which is a generic for Augmentin, and dairy products. It isn't that they react adversely, when there is an issue, it's just that dairy products coat the stomach and may prevent absorption of as much of the antibiotic as normal. However, as I said, it is not an issue with this particular one. Side effects may include nausea, dizziness, non-allergic skin rash and diarrhea. Is there anything else I can help with?

I have an abscessed tooth and got an antibiotic from a feed store called Fish Pen (penicillin) 250MG. The vet said it would be fine to take it. It's an oval pill with the number 520 on it. How often, how many and how long should I take it for? ## Hello, Cynthia! How are you? I'm sorry about the toothache. No, since it hasn't been specifically manufactured for human use, it may not be safe for you to take. The dosage can also vary, depending on the severity of the infection and your response to antibiotics, it can range from 500mgs twice daily up to 500mgs 4 times a day, sometimes even more. Side effects may include nausea, dizziness, non-allergic skin rash and diarrhea. Additionally, whatever caused the abscess will need to be taken care by your dentist, because while an ant...

Hello I am worried about taken any meds at all.I have been sick for four months with chronic bronchitis, this is my third bought of antibiotics, all three being different.first the z pac then bactrim now this.I was wanting to know if i could experience life threatening side effects if i have taken this medicine before? I have taken it 7 years ago for rocky mountain spotted fever. I know i need to take it ,i just hate anything unnatural in my body And if so how long would it take to have an allergic reaction? thanks ## Hello, Sarah! How are you? No, whether or not you've taken it before should have no bearing on such side effects. The only issue would be if you had an allergic reaction to it in the past, because those tend to get worse with repeated exposure. You might be thinking of a...

I was given A weeks dose of nitrofurantoin 100 mg for UTI and on the last 3 days my skin has been uncontrollably itchy. Small bumps, all through out my legs and arms. The itching seems to become more intense at night. Even a day after I've stopped the antibiotics. When will this stop? Should I see a doctor? ## Hi Kristina, Sorry to hear about your situation. Based on my research, the US National Library of Medicine does actually list itching as an allergic reaction from taking nitrofurantoin. Ref: ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmedhealth/PMHT0011428/?report=details#side_effects However this is something that you should probably contact your doctor about as soon as possible if the symptoms don't go away on their own or become too bothersome/severe (which from your description seems like tha...

I took an hiv test and it came back negative. what could be the course ## Hello, Mothapo! How are you? It isn't likely due to the antibiotic that long after taking it. Are you on any other medications? Has anything in your diet changed recently? Have you had this checked out by your doctor? ## Hi... I have a real bad yeast infection on my foot. Blisters, skin peeling, very foul odor. Will Sulfamethoxazole TMP DS help me? ## Hi Niesha, How are you? Sorry to hear about the yeast on your foot. To answer your question though, sulfamethoxazole/tmp is generally not recommended for treating yeast infections, as it is more so intended to treat "bacterial" infections. So in my opinion, it isn't necessarily the best 1st choice option. If you want to eradicate a yeast infection I would suggest talking with your doctor about trying an anti-fungal medication, such as Diflucan (Fluconazole), which is actually marketed for use in treating yeast infections/candida specifically. It's also important to note that some antibiotics (including sulfamethoxazole/tmp) can also backfire and ...

My husband took his 1st dose of amox clav 875mg today at 2pm. He has been experiencing tightening of the chest on and off since then. Is this a reaction to the medication ## Hello, Kristine! How is your husband feeling? Any time that anyone feels tightening of the chest, chest pain or anything unusual, they should contact their doctor or seek emergency medical attention immediately. That's just not something you should risk leaving to guesswork and hoping it's just due to a dose of an antibiotic, or other medication. That said, this is a generic for Augmentin and no, it shouldn't cause that type of symptom. Learn more Augmentin details here. So, it could be due to an allergic reaction to it, or some other health issue. Has he contacted his doctor? ## Thank you for responding...

I'm taking purbac tablets for acne and I've had unprotected sex with my husband. What are the chances of falling pregnant? ## I have been using Trigestrel prevention pills for 6 months now. I had unprotected sex last thursday, got sick on sunday, and the doctor gave me the Purbac antibiotic. My periods were supposed to have come today but they haven't, so I'm worried. I missed taking one pill in the morning so took two that night as my doctor explained i should if i miss taking a pill and i am on the 2 month injection for over a year. what is the difference between sulfamethoxazole tmp ss tab and sulfamethoxazole tmp ds tab (bactrim ds tablet)? Are they same dosages? Can one use them interchangeably? Thanks ## Hi wayne, From what I could gather, I believe the difference between the "SS" vs "DS" is single strength and double strength tablets. The DS tablets reportedly contain double the amount of active ingredients and I've also heard this was the case from other patients who've received an answer to this question as well. The other important difference to know about is that the double strength tablet is usually only taken twice daily as opposed to four times a day with the regular strength tablets. So if you're going to be interchanging between the two dosages, you'll also have to take...
