An Alternative To Vicodin I Hope
(Newest replies first)

Updated

I believe that a dear friend of mine is possibly addicted to Vicodin. Probably it is really hard for her to just come off it, but maybe by switching to another med or weening off is the thing to do. I notice that Lorcet also has Hydrocodone in it, but maybe it is not as addicting as Vicodin? Do you think that maybe by starting on this drug instead she can start to come down off the habit? If anybody could offer any information I would appreciate it. Thanks, Ingrid

I agree with you 100%. It’s so wrong that those of us who correctly take our pain meds because we really need them are being punished by these abusers! I’m also sick of hearing in the daily news how opioid deaths are rising! They need to get it right and say how “fake” opioid pills laced with fentanyl are the cause of these OD’s! It’s very misleading to people who don’t understand what’s really happening. God help us because the government and the FDA sure won’t!

I too take my medication as prescribed. It is very frustrating to have to pay for lab work all the time. They will not prescribe unless I come to the office. I had three cervical discs removed and a fusion with a titanium cage. I do not take a lot. 5 - 10 mg/day. The pharmacists look at me like a junkie too!

I agree. I'ma disabled vet and have been taking hydrocodone 10, 325 for 4 years now. Have you ever had Oxycontine? Is it better on relieving the pain. Some days I need 6 hydrocodone somedays only 3. I have to do a piss test at the VA so they make sure i'm not selling them. Crazy

i have been taking vicodin for 9 years. i do not believe i am addicted. however i have a kidney disease and will probably be on dialysis before the year is out. i am worried about the acetiminophen and liver and kidney damage. what can i take for the chronic pain that won`t cause further damage to my liver and kidneys. at this point i am not worried about addiction since i will undoubtedly be taking drugs by the handful for the rest of my life. ijust don`t want to shorten it anymore than it already is. what can i take for pain that will be as effective as vicodin?

Suboxone is a detox medication that is used alot now and it works WONDERS. I have been clean now for 8 months because of it (I know that dont sound like a long time, but to a drug addict it really is!!!) I was on any kind of pain killer I could get my hands on at the time: Vicodin, Vicodin 7.5, Perc's, Codeine, Fioricet, Perc 10's, Morphine, Dilaudid... you name it... Suboxone not only SAVED my life, but it most definately CHANGED IT! Here is their website for any of you that want more info on a medication that gets you off the opiates and with no withdrawl!

Goodluck to you all and I hope you have the turnout I did!

I was addicted to Hydrocodone for sometime. My shrink finally gave me a weekend full of Seroquel I slept the entire weekend w/o narcotics, was pretty good when weekend was over. Still have desire and still try to get it when I go to DR but I know I am addicted so when I do get it I try not to go over the edge...it is very difficult but the price of Dr's has kept me from getting my hands on much of it. Might look into the Seroquel, I was taking 300mg 3 times a day for two full day. Good Luck, we all sympathize.

To comment to the original question...
Vicodin, Lorcet, Lortab and Norco all contain the narcotic hydrocodone.

Hydrocodone addiction is common. Depending on the severity of the addiction, sudden cessation may be, at worst fatal and at best extremely unpleasant. Get with a doctor and honestly discuss the problem, there's no shame in trying to quit.

I was once addicted to hydrocodone. Luckily, I'm in the minority of those who self-detoxed and stayed away from it permanently (12 years now!). My withdrawal was sudden; the pains, fever, anxiety and downright misery I felt for seventeen days left me a changed man. Give your friend as much support as you can to help her stop taking it.

sorry blackbeltprincess but percocet is not hydrocodone it is oxycodone. oxycodone is what oxycontin is made of as well as tylox. now all the names for hydrocodone is lorcet, lortab, and vicodin. and oxycodone is much more dificult to come off of than hydrocodone. i myself am dependant on hydrocodone for 14 years now. i do not abuse them but have to take them to get up in the mornings to cope. because i have sustained alot of injuries in the past. for those who abuse these drugs makes it harder for people like myself to get my meds from my dr. and it is more expensive because lab work and drug test to make sure i am taking them properly. thanks alot abuser's or should ass holes i should say!

Lorcet, Vicodin, Percocet, all are made of Hydrocodone plus an over-the-counter pain killer, such as Tylenol, Aspirin, Ibuprofen, etc. The different names are from different manufacturers and contain different types of OTC meds. All are just as addictive--the only difference is the amount of hydrocodone in each one (2.5 mg, 5 mg, 7.5 mg, 10 mg).

Ingrid, please note that Lorcet is essentially the same drug as Vicodin, but with a different name. If your friend is really addicted to Vicodin then it is imperative that she seek medical assistance. Withdrawals from narcotics are said to be very unpleasant experiences!
