Amoxilcillin 500 Mg Veterinary Usage And Dosage For Staph

My 80lb dog has a staph infection and i can't afford his med for another treatment. Can i give him my Amoxil and how much?

I would suggest asking his veterinarian, since they are familiar with the use of such medications in animals. There shouldn't be a problem with him taking it, since it is the same as what's used for animals, but the dosing can vary depending on the severity of the infection and his body weight.

My 50+ lb dog has an infection between her toes, she had it about a month, it may be a prickly pear stuck in there. Can i give her 1/2 875 amox-clav-pot? Appreciate any help. PS - I just found this site and seems great !!!!

Ali, if a prickly pear is still in there, an antibiotic is not likely to help. It needs to be safely removed, and to have the infection treated. If this has been going on for a month, I think you really need to take her to see a veterinarian for safe treatment of the issue. I know it isn't cheap, we lost a dog in December after months of spending money on various medications, and testing at four different vets, but sadly, it was to no avail.

It is sad to see a dog walking around like that, she may be in pain, not all dogs show it, so she may also need a pain medication, in addition to the antibiotic. I strongly urge you to take her to her vet.

Unfortunately, I do not know the proper dosages for animals regarding most medications. I can rattle off tons of information on human medications, but my knowledge of properly medicating a canine, or feline is very limited. I can tell you that the FDA warns that most antibiotics for dogs can cause similar side effects to what they do in humans, such as nausea, drowsiness, and diarrhea.

Sometimes, if you call a vet and they are sympathetic, they will tell you what to do over the phone, but not all of them are comfortable with that.
