Amoxicillin For Tooth Infection (Page 2)

In december I developed bad tooth pain and a sore on the gum in a left molar. I have a heart murmer and my blood press.rose to a high level but was erratic and other times a normal rate. I called a dentist and he said to go to the ER. I did and they prescribed amoxicillin at 500mgs every 8 hrs. The last dose was on Jan 3, 2013 and by then the tooth problem was gone. I went to a dentist and he found no infections but said a molar on the opposite side which had lost some filling should be repaired soon. I made an appt. with him, but in the meantime it developed a blister near the root and soreness at the gumline. Also I started having erratic BP swings again sometimes 160/105 and resting pulse to 88. When I called he said to cancel his appt and go to the ER again, he didn't think the BP could be from the tooth problem. He said in the mean time for the tooth to begin taking 500mg amox. every 6 hrs. ...even though the previous time the ER prescribed 500mgs every 8hrs. I did not want to go back to the ER and did not. After 5 days of 500mgs 6 times per day no more BP problem, tooth sores almost gone. I have nausea from the amox at 6 times per day, can I cut it to 8 times per day for the remainder of the scrip ? I have 17 pills left. Am I taking too much of this? This is my second ten days on amox. in such a short time. There was a ten day interval between presciptions.

I have a tooth infection and have been taking Amoxicillin 500mg 3x a day for 1 day, but don't have enough till I see my dentist in 12 days. Can I use Amox-Clav 875mg for the last 3 days before my dentist appointment for a tooth extraction?

Regular dosing is q8h; however, bp changes indicate possible sepsis, bubble at gumline indicates possible abscess, so therefore closer intervals may be indicated. Changing your dosing times by consulting people online rather than following your doctor's recommendations and/or going to the ER as advised is somewhat less than optimal.
smh.

Get fish mox. It comes in 250 mg and 500 mg doses. It is the exact same thing (just simply amoxicillin) and it has the same markings even. In fact, if you look it up by the markings, it tells you that its a prescription antibiotic. Careful and check doses and don't take it if you don't need it, because then it will not work when you do. You can also get Bactrim, Penicillin and many other antibiotics the same way and it's not very expensive.

I know this is an old post but if u ever need antibiotics and you don't have insurance go to a tack and feed store and buy fish mox. its the same exact medication co that makes human amoxicillin GlaxoSmithKline. it comes in 250mg 500 mg. Google it and even call your pharmacy and they will tell you it is the same. I hope this helps you in the future if needed.

Hi, I kept on taking them so now only a couple left......you can't just take a couple of them though or they could do more harm than good for you, I think you would need a full ten day prescription. I originally went to the ER and they gave me a full 10 day prescript., that is something you might want to consider doing. If you wait too long and let an infection get started you will be putting your health in jeopardy. The amox. that I took stopped the infections before they got any further. I should have acted sooner but finally got to the dentist and had the tooth filled and my teeth cleaned and exrayed....there were no needles used at all...didn't even need novicain. I don't have any dental insurance either but the total cost for the dental work was not too bad at $230. I had gone to another dentist first though and they would have charged nearly $3000 for a porcelain filling & crown and lots of other things that this dentist said were not needed...I still had a good crown on my tooth. So do shop around or try a college dental school where it may be free. Best wishes to you....I know what you are going through first hand.

Hi Jenna, I guess maybe it was affecting my mind when I wrote the last part of that post.....good excuse anyways .I meant that I have been taking it 4 times per day or every 6 hrs and was thinking maybe I should cut it to every 8 hours or 3 times per day. The first tooth was an exposed root which healed, this one is a definite infection being held back by the amoxicillin. I made an appt so I guess I will find out how/ if I can get out of this soon...,,,,if the thoughts of going there don't cause a stroke or heart attack before then. Thank you for your kind response...very much appreciated !

Hi Pete,

I'm sorry to hear about your situation, dental pain is definitely not easy to deal with. Based on my research, for most infections in adults, one of the dosing regimens for amoxicillin is 500 mg every 8 hours. I'm not sure as to why your dentist is having you take this dose every 6 hours, maybe it's because of the severity of your issue. If you are currently taking 6 pills a day, that equals out to two more pills per day than you were instructed to take. I wouldn't recommend taking any more than what was prescribed to you, as these antibiotics can be quite harsh on the body. Since you are experiencing nausea I would suggest that you lower your dose back to 500 mg every 6 hours.

I hope this info helps!
