Amlodipine And Grapefruit

I consume 1 grapefruit (1/2 grapefruit daily) for a long time and now I am on Amlodipine - can it affect my creatinine count ?

Hi Donna,

nlm.nih.gov notes that, "Coadministration of 240 mL of grapefruit juice with a single oral dose of amlodipine 10 mg in 20 healthy volunteers had no significant effect on the pharmacokinetics of amlodipine."

However, an article I found on Livestrong.com makes a point of stating that, "If you take amlodipine -- or any other kind of calcium channel blocker -- do not take them with grapefruit, grapefruit juice or grapefruit dietary supplements, because serious, possibly fatal, reactions may occur."

"Grapefruit inhibits your CYP34A enzyme, a protein that helps your body metabolize drugs. When your body fails to properly metabolize drugs, you may end up with more of the drug in your system than intended, causing an accidental overdose."

Additional references for verification can be found by Googling "Amlodipine grapefruit". As of yet though, I haven't come across any info regarding its effects on your creatinine count.
