I am 69 yr. old male living in NY State. I was put on Amiodarone in Dec. 2021, 200mg/day. I summarily stopped the med. in Nov. 2022 when the morbid depression turned to distinctly suicidal thoughts. As always, when I experience new adverse effects I re-read, carefully, the side effects of the most recent med. added to my regimen. In this case it was Amiodarone and I immediately knew what was happening. In the final section generally labeled as, "call your doctor immediately if you experience any of the following side effects", I was experiencing several of the worst case scenario side effects. I told my cardiologist I had stopped the med. and he made NO auditory response, not a single word. I expected some direction, continue the drug, taper off, replace with..., you must contin...

I have recently started taking Amiodarone. Some of the comments here are worrisome, but were made several years ago. Is it safer now or still the same risks? ## Hello, Mary! How are you? Nothing has really changed about it. The FDA classifies it as an antiarrhyythic agent that's common used to treat cardiac dysrhythmias. Its typical side effects may possibly include nausea, interstitial lung disease, thyroid abnormalities, GI upset and elevated liver enzymes. What do you consider really risk and worrisome? I was given Amiodarone as a precaution June of last year after open heart surgery. Even after two personal visits each (the heart surgeon and the attending pulmonary doctor). I made it very clear to each of them not to give me any medication that could affect my asthma. I started having serious breathing issues within three days of my surgery that became progressively worse. I complained daily and begged for Prednisone which they refused to give me. I had stopped this poisonous drug after five weeks, but the damage was done. Amiodarone can stay in the cells of your body for several months continuously doing damage to your lungs and more. I would like to know if Amiodarone was effective for atrial fibrillation and were there bad side effects? ## Yes, Amiodarone is used to treat irregular heart beat, and has successfully helped many people, especially when other medications weren't effective. Should Amiodarone 200mg Tab ZYD be prescribed to someone diagnosed with Amyloidosis? My amyloidosis is causing a very irregular heart beat,stiffness in my wrist, legs & jaw. I have taken Amiodarone for one day (3 pills) and stiffness appears to be worse & was unable to sleep. I have a history of being very sensitive to medications. ## It is normal to experience some side effects, whenever you start a new medication. The FDA lists those as being possibly side effects, along with nausea, dizziness, headache, and increased urination. Having only taken 3 pills, it would be very odd to notice a significant change, but we are all different, so the possibility cannot be ruled out. How are you doing, now? Has there been any change? I am 64 yr old female. 200mg a day. How dangerous is this drug. My Dr. did not want to give it to me, but nothing else worked. Am looking to have an ablation soon. ## Hi sue, I did some research on this medication, and the information I have found is not so promising. There have been deaths linked to this medication and from what I can gather, those deaths have a lot to do with how toxic the medication is. A couple of the black box warnings associated with Amiodarone state that arrhythmias can be worsened and that it may cause significant heart block. If your doctor is afraid to give this to you, I would honestly listen to him and not take any chances. Since taking Hexarone my husband has complained of sore itchy breasts. He also feels his vetiligo has worsened. Why is the 100 mg tablet of Amiodarone about $200 for a 30 day supply at retail, when the 200 and 400 mg tablets are about $20 and $30 respectively? I have been on this drug for the past 2 yrs. After being on various AF drugs, most only last 3-4 yrs. Also had 2 ablations. I am evaluated every 6 mos. liver, thyroid and x-rays of the chest. Can I list all of dads meds to get some feedback on possible interactions that docs haven't explained to us or that we may not have fully understood? ## My dad, age 82 takes the following meds: Valsartan; Omeprazol; Adiro; Sutril; Trangorex; Amlodopino; Sintrom; Alupurinol & Bisoprolol. In the last 6 months i've torn muscles in my arm and knee. could it be from the use of hexarone? ## Hello, Wayne! How are you? I'm sorry about the problems you've experienced. This medication is listed as containing the active ingredient Amiodarone and I'm not seeing anything in the FDA reports that it has been known to cause that. However, it can cause some muscle weakness, spasms and cramping, so there's a chance that it did contribute to the problem, but it's hard to know for sure. Are you on any other medications?

Having considerable side effects while taking amidarone. Are there other medicine's that can do the same thing, but without possibly all the other side effect's. If you could give me some alternative's I would really appreciate the help. Thank You ## Hi Larry, It is important to know that all prescription drugs pose the risk of side effects. Whether or not you respond favorably to another medication is not something anyone else can determine ahead of time either, unfortunately. A few suggestions I can offer though for other similar drugs with antiarrhythmic properties are: disopyramide dofetilide dronedarone flecainide procainamide propafenone quinidine sotalol Those are just the generic names, but I hope it helps open up your options!

I am a HCM patient with irregular heart beat, age 43Ys, M. I had taken amidarone 200mg (1+0+0) with Concor 5mg for 3ys. 6month ago Amio was stopped due to side effects. My thyroid function test was not normal. It was hyper (TSH=0). After stopping Amiodarone I hve been taking Concor 5mg twice a day (5mg+0+5mg). Irregular heart beat was more or less there with a tollerance level, also my doctor told that recent Holter report/ECG doesn't show any dangerous types of irregulat beats. Recently my Thyroid test is normal (TSH=3.71) though I didn't take any med for this as suggested by my Doc. Now he wants to go back again with Amiodarone200mg once daily +Conconr 5mg once daily, and asked my opinion abt this. Is it ok to go back again with Amidarone?
