Alcohol And Gabapentin (Page 4)

Does anyone drink beer or other alcohol while taking this? I start on it tonight, increasing every 5 days to 900 mg total a day. I'm curious as to how much alcohol can be tolerated and if there are any reasons to avoid it completely. I like my Budweiser. Thanks for any input.

I got on this forum and thread through a Google search. Mainly - I want to know if I'm damaging my liver or any other vital organ when I continue to drink and take gabapentin. I love my liver and don't drink with Percocet or any other acetaminophen drug..

Basically what I'm reading here is common sense to not drive etc. when the two are combined. Also that the g* may increase the effects of alcohol. If so...BRING IT ON! I don't need the extra calories and drink for the effect.

I'm on a daily regimen of 300 mg g* daily (one capsule) but am prescribed 1-3 tablets daily. I save back the extras and pop 3 when I need the extra calming effect. I haven't experienced any negative side effects. Just checking on the organ damage info.

Booze and gabapentin . . . confusion . . . inability to concentrate . . . no mojo . . . no sex . . . don't give a s*** either . . . as close to a frontal brain lobe removal as there is. Bad idea to mix.

I take 3200mg for nerve pain after damaging the cervical spine and have done for 6 years now. The pain clinic informed me that Alcohol and Gabapentin operate on the pain receptors which is why once drunk you don't feel the pain. They pointed out that taking the Gabapentin after drinking has to be done in a sensible manner as the Gabapentin can double the effects of drunkenness, they advise depending on how much you drink reducing the dosage. Unfortunately you can only know by how much by trial and error.

I'm the same way! If I drink too much (3 glasses of wine or so) I'm done at night and if I get out of bed I can't walk straight! Hell.. I don't even have to drink to lose my balance.. Just take your neurontin!

Yes I totally agree with you on the shots! I have gone to lunch with my hubby and when we do we like a shot or two of tequila but if I take neurontin before we do that I'm a mess.. My equilibrium is off and I end up in the bed laying down feeling like I have vertigo. So, needless to say I don't take it until later. I take it as a mood stabilizer so I can do that but if someone takes it for seizures then I would not recommend it. (Unless someone can get you home without you driving)

I take neurontin and have some wine about 3-4 times a week. The side effects I have are dizziness and loss of coordination. Minor but still there. I recommend being cautious, however, it's not that bad.

My mom is on gabapentin, started a few months back. Shes reported a lot of confusion and blurred and fuzzy vision during the day time. She drinks every night, and when the alcohol is introduced along with the gabapentin, its a nightmare. One or two beers really won't mess with anyone on anything too much. But throw a few shots in there and all hell brakes loose. She has been drinking FOR YEARSSS, and usually a few shots over the course of a night in a mixed drink is something she handles no problem, shes got a tolerance. But since the gabapentin she has these crazy fits of just yelling and screaming and cussing and slamming doors, its terrifying. And then when she wakes up...she remembers nothing, nada. She wakes up thinking she went to bed early and got a great nights sleep, having no memory whats so ever of her episode the night before. Its not the alcohol by itself, as I said she has been drinking as much as she always has for years, and even the nights she over does it she never black outs. I would really caution those individuals who are thinking of taking this medication that are also more "advanced" drinkers.

I'm a recovering alcoholic and 7 months ago before I got sober I was drinking 1/2-1 liters of vodka daily and taking 900 mg of gabapentin no problem. I was originally put on gabby to combat anxiety and nerve pain from alcoholism. To answer your question they are both depressants so when used together it could cause a synergistic effect (enhance one another). Since alcohol is the stronger drug you may feel more drunk. However over time you will develop a tolerance to gabapentin and the more times you mix the two you will have a better understanding of how the interaction affects you individually. In a nutshell I wouldn't recommend getting s*** faced. P.s. 900 mg isn't that much. Oh and please don't drive.

Have you been tested for Fibromyalgia? Sounds a lot like what I go through daily and when the flare ups are bad the anxiety is EXTREME, the brain fog is deafening (can't hear myself think). Just started gabapentin yesterday, hope it helps with something oh and I always have 1-2 beers a night, we will see how that goes.

I take 400 mg of gabapentin daily about an hour before I drink between 2 and 4 beers nightly, usually high alcohol Imperial IPA's. I haven't had any problems for the past year except getting a better buzz and sleepy. It's a great combination!

Gabapentin Clinic Research Studies show that Gabapentin used with 900 mg and above will reduce or eliminate alcohol craving or relapse.

I don't know why i am the only one who experiences this....
Back in the year 2000 i was on a prescription of Gabapentin 100 mlg it was prescribed for mood disorder. I did not the like way it made me feel a bit drugged so i did not always take it.
Later i developed sever insomnia and no thing helped so i went to a bar and a had some whine which helped me to sleep. But one night i had taken the gabapemtin and the whine. i woke up in the middle of the night so drunk i could not get out of bed.
It took me a while and falling down a flight of stairs trying to go to the bathroom that something was wrong and then i realized that drinking alcohol after taking gabapentin caused severe intoxication. The days i had not taken gabapentin i was alright and i never again did that. Except more recently when i had some and took it by accident and the same thing . Seems as though i am the only one to react that way.

I'm 24 years old and was in a car accident in December 2015, hit by a drunk driver. In the beginning of April they did a cortisone steroid epidural at my L5-S1 that helped my herniated disk bulge back pain but a sciatic nerve pain down my right leg showed up during the inj. I started on 300mg gabapentin last night (nightly only), I did not know that you couldn't take it with alcohol until today. Also didn't know the side effects of it with pain killers. Needless to say, I had my Norco 10/325mg then drank 2 low alcohol content beers and later on took my nightly meds which included the new gabapentin. I did not have any bad side effects good ones actually, I was able to please my husband without any pain. Today my pain medication has changed to Percocet 10/325mg and I am not drinking tonight so I can find the real outcome of only painkillers and gabapentin. I just want to be able to work pain free and be useful to my staff in my department. There is a 90% chance that they will do surgery but for now, I'm managing my pain.

I take 3200mg. of Gabapentin a day for the past 3 years. I had to quit drinking alcohol all together. It first started out as a my face getting beet red after a few beers, so I quit for a few months. Out to dinner one night I got the bright idea to order a Long Island Ice Tea. Mistake: My wife had to rush me to the emergency room because I could barely breathe. It took some massive dosages of Benedryl to straighten me out.

My personal experience is that i i take alcohol with gabapntin before bedtime will wake up far more drunk than if i used alcohol by itself.
The first time i experienced this was when i was on a normal dose and one night i drank some wine. Not enough to get really drunk. I used the wine to help me to sleep. Then i woke up a few hours earlier and felt like i was so drunk i could not even get up,
I tried to get up but fell and hit my head on a peace of furniture and went back to bed. The next day my bed was soaked with blood. .
I did this one other time and when i tried to go to the bathroom which was next to some long stairs i fell down the stairs. So i stopped doing both together

I totally agree I have been on Gabapentin for years 1200 mg daily. I drink wine and I feel completely normal.

Darren...like many other meds, it depends on the individual. I can drink wine, beer, whatever and feel OK...but a friend can't drink while taking Gabapentin because of severe headaches she gets.
