Alcohol And Gabapentin (Page 3)

Does anyone drink beer or other alcohol while taking this? I start on it tonight, increasing every 5 days to 900 mg total a day. I'm curious as to how much alcohol can be tolerated and if there are any reasons to avoid it completely. I like my Budweiser. Thanks for any input.
I'm sorry but I call bulls***. Too many people saying that take massive overdoses everyday and drink booze with no affect. Just talk to your doctor! These internet PhDs are gonna get you killed. Everyone reacts different. Just like not everyone who takes gabapentin gets the manic type effect for about 2 hours then crashes and falls asleep. But I do. Everyone is different and the only person who can answer this wisely for you is someone who knows your body. Your doctor! Get off the internet and call your doctor. Case closed. God bless!
Can somebody say 'addiction'? Who the hell even prescribes that much! My 1600 is almost unheard of. Gabapentin MAKES a drunkish feeling but you need to "drink heavy" too? Go to rehab. I'll pray for you!
I am of Northern Europe American descent, 47 yrs old, 5'3", 140lbs. I am on 700 mg gabapentin but trying to stick to 600 mg. My doc said to move it up to 900 mg for high-stress events. I drink 2 beers a day, supplemented with additional alcohol when I'm ultra stressed. I have noticed that my alcohol consumption, which I do purely for stress-relieving purposes, is LESS effective at higher gabapentin doses. Meaning - when I am at 900 mg a day, it's as if the 2 beers are water. Seriously. And yet I'm still stressed. So, as an anxiety med, I'm not sure what to make of it. My gabapentin use has been for purely social anxiety, but the gabapentin hasn't fixed that, so maybe the anxiety is not actually purely social?
I don't know. But I DO know that, in trying to address my anxiety with gabapentin, I have found that adding alcohol doesn't work. For me, the higher the gabapentin dose, the less effective the alcohol. So I've actually lowered my dose to 600 mg so that the alcohol could work as an anti-anxiety med (because alcohol IS that, for me). I've been concerned about the physiological effects of alcohol plus gabapentin, but other than my notice of the lack-of-effect of alcohol, the gabapentin is fine.
I made that mistake, one time. I learned my lesson. I take 1600 gabapentin every night. As well as 200mg Dilantin 3 times each day. I'll never forget it. I started sweating. Very heavily. My face and upper back\neck were tomato red and exceedingly hot feeling not only to myself but to the touch. After about an hour, give or take a few, when the hor\red\however ya wanna call that wore off, the cramps began. Stomach cramps/pains straight from hell. Unbearable to a point. The only reason i didnt seek medical attention was, what would i even say? Oh i took my meds but then decided to have me a double shot of whiskey? C'mon, really? Its a terrible idea and i would strongly advise you dont do it.
I'd say be careful. Take it very easy. My experience is that 2 spirits is my total limit. I will feel very drunk bit also drowsy and a bit queasy.
iam taking 3000mg a day and drink heavy no problems
I've been taking 1200 gabapentine for years now and drank quite heavily. I had no side effects whatsoever. I also stopped drinking abruptly and again I suffered nothing.
You drank way too much and your true feelings surfaced.
Are you sure it's safe I'm very petite and I'm also taking 3600 mg a day but I like to drink occasionally
I take 2700 mg of Gapbapentin every day which is a very high dose. I can drink 4 or 5 light beers without problems. Just let someone else do the driving.
Me too I've been taking gabapentin for years for epilepsy and I like my red wine... I feel fine drinking.... I take 600 mg three times a day.... Enjoy life it's too short...
I have to say, I have never heard of the Sinclair method, but after reading up on it, it is extremely interesting and something I could see benefiting myself as a 27 year old alcoholic. I have been drinking heavily since 18 and have stopped and relapsed many many times. Thanks for this post.
Also, I take gabepentin. I. Prescribed 300mg a day, but usually take more like 3g (3000mg). Alcohol has never affected the gabapentin, other than intensifying the drinking. I wake up the same and go to work the same.
I take gabapentin 500mg once a day, just wondering if I can drink on this?? My doctor prescribed this to me because I have ADD a minor case of it. The other ADD medicines I've tried gave me anxiety, my doctor told me this medicine will help with my ADD, anxiety, and help with my sleeplessness... I take them before I go to bed every night. I just turned 21, so I want to know if drinking is okay!
My goodness. Such extreme conditions you all report. I like my 900 mg of gabapentin as it significantly reduces my RA pain. Just asking about half a glass of wine in the evening after taking 309 mg at noon.
Update: Totally off of Gabapentin and felt great... So I go see a psychiatrist, for the 1st time in my life. You see I'm trying to deal with my addiction to pain meds and my destructive downward spiral I'm stuck in. So this shrink takes away my Xanax and puts me on Klonopin (Which scares the Hell out of me) then writes a prescription for: Gabapentin! OMG! When I told him I just got off that drug he says "We'll, I just put you back on it" I have elected to not take it. No way, No how. Now I have to deal with that Klonopin crap. I've never know anyone who's taken it and the only thing I know about it is the horror stories I've read about. Is there no end to this madness?
The problem I have is that it does not work for my RLS. Are you taking Horizant or regular? Some wine doesn't bother me.
My advice to you is don't drink with any medication. My 53 year old husband died last year while on this drug. If you are taking this to help stop drinking, get your heart evaluated, have an ultra sound done.
Like almost everyone else here, I hhighly recommend nobody mixes Gaba and alcohol. Yesterday(36 hours ago) I took just one 100 mMG capsule. I had a couple beers earlier(26 hours after I took 100 mg) and I may be going to the ER. I wont list all of my symptoms, just know this is evil stuff... We're told it's safe on the liver yet told to watch for jaundice and clay colored stools.. Makes total ssense. Please -- dont play around with this 'medicine'!
Gabapentin isn't processed by the liver. It is absorbed in the gi tract and filtered out through the kidneys.
The best thing finally happened to me. I weaned myself off of 2400mg. of Gabapentin a day, and I'm now completely off that drug. I threw out 10 full bottles of 800mg pills. I feel so much better without that crap in my system, it was poisonous. This time I bucked against my doctors orders and did something that was good for me.
