Adderall Backorder (Page 55)
UpdatedI take generic Adderall 20 mg for narcolepsy and there is not one local pharmacy that has it in stock. I have never had this problem before. The pharmacies are saying that it's on backorder from the manufacturer. Is anyone else having problems getting their scripts filled?
Re: Arugula302 (# 1079)
They do not have to ask if you want a specific generic. Doctors cannot call in Schedule II drugs. They can fax them but their fax and the fax at the pharmacy has to be approved. Some doctors do not have the approved fax equipment.
If you tell the pharmacist to only give you TEVA you have no guarantee they will not fill it with another generic. Be sure you check your prescription Each time you pick it up Before you leave from checking out.
Re: BlessedLady (# 1078)
Still ridiculous. Unethical. Unscientific. Subjective judgements about a person 's value determining treatment? That's just unconstitutional.
Re: Lady ADHD (# 1080)
The thing is, Adderall and Mental health medication should be no different than any other kind of meds. All this talk about mental health but in the end it's just lip service! I have been waiting a week for the pharmacy to have my 20mg XR and my 10mg IR Adderall. This is the third time in six months they have been out! They were supposed to get it today at 6pm but when I called they said" We were expecting it today but it wasn't in the order. Try back next Tuesday after 6pm". I have to wonder if the pharmacy tech if we were talking about Insulin of some other medication.
My experience with Walgreens is that they are definitely more pretentious than their competitors. No idea why that is.
Re: tim (# 1084)
My pharmacy on Long Island is completely out of stock and has been for weeks.
Re: JuanEstebanPHd (# 1083)
You need to talk with the pharmacist or Pharmacy Manager.
Re: Antonio (# 1041)
Where in the country are you?
Shortages of both generic and brand Adderall seem to be a problem all over right now. From what I have researched and read, it seems there has been a drastic increase over the past few months in Adderall prescriptions especially through teleheath. Here’s a portion of one article…
“As a result of the rise in Adderall prescriptions, major pharmacies in the U.S. have started refusing to fill certain prescriptions from telehealth providers. According to The Wall Street Journal, Walmart, CVS, and Walgreens have all recently blocked or delayed stimulant prescriptions from telehealth providers treating ADHD online, including Cerebral and Done.”
Attached is an article in reference to this issue.

I am not sure why something was done earlier to address this issue since this appears to have been an ongoing problem that many were aware of, but to just stop or deny prescriptions is unacceptable in my opinion!
I am not sure what part the pharmaceutical companies have in this shortage, but they had to have seen some “red flags” if their Adderall orders doubled over the past few months. I am sure they will use this to their advantage in some way because they are so greedy. I wouldn’t be surprised if the we see a cost increase as result. But honestly, they don’t need an excuse to raise the prices because they did just that about 7 years ago when they increased the cost overnight by 600%!!! An no, that is not a typo! I was told this happened by a pharmacist at a small drug store who had just been notified not long before I filled my prescription.
Unfortunately, right now you will just have to call around to different pharmacies until you find one that has it in stock. I was told by my local Walgreens that none of their stores have any adderall in stock right now and that it is on back order without any idea on when it will be available. I hope this helps! I am dealing with it now and it is so irritating!
Re: tim (# 1084)
It depends on the pharmacist and other pharmacy staff. I have traded at a Walgreens in the metropolitan city I live in for years. The reason is the pharmacist and pharmacy staff are so nice, polite and helpful. A friend of mine that takes Adderall started going there a while back because she heard me say so many nice things about the pharmacy and pharmacy staff.
Re: BlessedLady (# 1089)
I don't understand the use of the word traded, but that aside... Here's the deal
- developing a familiar relationship with a pharmacist has always paid off for me, because when there is greater demand than supply some pharmacists WILL turn away drop by customers that don't regularly fill at their store.
- paper script vs doctor faxing it - paper gets turned away more readily. Absolutely my experience.
- corporate knows everything. They know which pharmacy is getting what and if you're being BS'd they'll tell you.
- call McKesson, AmerisourceBergen and Cardinal Health and ask if it's true that they're not shipping.
- call Teva generics, Lannett and Rhodes and ask if they're shipping. If they are then it's going somewhere.
- call the DEA and see what's happening.
Personally, at a certain point the sensible thing is to temporarily switch meds. Focalin for example is better than nothing.
Also, the telephone # of every manufacturer is listed right here
https://www.accessdata.fda.gov/scripts/...
If the FDA claims the shortage is over then someone needs to explain the backorder and the pharmacy will not have answers
Re: Rcma (# 1090)
If I could make all those calls, I wouldn't need Adderall.
Re: Rcma (# 1090)
Great advice ! Where the manufacturing plant is located is also important. Most generics are made in foreign countries. What is going on in those countries could delay shipments being sent and received here.
Re: BlessedLady (# 1092)
Absolutely true. But absolutely, the vague answers by pharmacists will continue.... The manufacturers and suppliers need to get calls!
Re: Rcma (# 1073)
We now have the ability to conduct pharmacogenetic testing that would mitigate much of the risk associated with "certain medications" but with stigma and the structure of our healthcare system these tests go largely unused. Its disgusting
I am having the same problem, they are telling me mid July is when they will have some. They do have different doses, well only 10mg, so my doctor is going to write the script for 90 because I take 30mg. I’m just hoping my insurance will cover it.
Re: Rcma (# 1093)
I spoke with a fill-in pharmacist at Walgreens today (about another prescription I had trouble getting filled). I had my insurance call the pharmacy. When I went to pick up that script she told me that Walgreens has a contract with a supplier (did not say which one) so they can only get meds from them. My regular pharmacist says they can only get 20 mg but the fill-in said she has 30mg in her regular store. And she and her co-pharmacists try to do everything they can BUT they have people waiting and fill the ones who have been waiting first. No idea how I would get an independent to give me the name of their supplier. What happened to the days when they could get a stock check from the supplier?
Re: Cyr (# 1096)
You're breaking through the wall! Excellent job. Ok, now you have actually started the conversation. Whenever that happens I see their name tag and say "thanks Jen, you have been like the pharmacy angel I've been looking for, this has been a really difficult time. Please, is there anything you can do? What if my Doctor calls in a small order for only 10 30mg tabs? That would help me concentrate on important responsibilities that I've been unable to accomplish"...
This makes you into a real person, with responsibilities, who needs help.... not just a stranger. And it shows you're a reasonable person, even 10 would help etc.
As for supplier, it's not confidential. I ask like this: "Are you folks using AmerisourceBergen or Cardinal?". They give me the answer or say "Neither, we are with MCKESSON".
If they ask me why (which never happened) I would say "because I need to take my script to a pharmacy that uses a different supplier if yours is backordered. I'm sure you can understand... And my doctor is concerned about maintaining my treatment plan."
Re: J (# 1085)
Same here (Hempstead). At this point, I basically just aim to have some left over each month because I almost expect to hear it's backordered. I have been on this stuff for almost 15 years - never once have I ever not been able to get it filled. In the past 4 months, it's happened every time. Ridiculous
Re: GMC (# 1088)
I called other Walgreens and they told they can not tell people if it's in stock bc its a controlled substance.
Re: Nance (# 1099)
In some states that is true. Like Florida. That's why all my posts say speak to a pharmacist in person.
Bottom line is that until this mess clears, which it will, people are gonna have to work to get their Rx. I put in the work and I haven't missed a script. My doctor is on board so that is a huge plus. Docs may need to be flexible because if a pharmacy can fill 30mg tabs ONLY vs your usual 20s, then docs need to resend a new script etc. Does it suck? Yes. But what's better? Complaining or getting the medication? People don't have power and plumbing and a/c or heat during summer hurricanes and winter storms. S*** happens like drug shortages and financial crises and hurricanes and wildfires and floods. I don't mean to lecture because I agree - it sucks. But sometimes a long stretch of good luck is mis interpreted as entitlement. No. Nothing is guaranteed. Medicine. Running water. Cheap gas ($5+ per Gallon in Europe for 20 yrs folks!). THIS is the reality -- the new normal -- right now with Adderall. Survival of the fittest. Work for it and you will find it. Expecting the past to be the present is a waste of time. Adapt, find clever ways during difficult times. That's what will get anyone what they need. Walgreens and CVS aren't Santa Claus. I really don't mean to sound preachy. It just needs to be said. Y'all have power. Use it. Automatic refills with your favorite brand clearly isn't happening. Figure something out and get what you want. Be a hero 4 yourself. That's called skillful action.
