Activella Long Term Use

I've been using Activella for probably 10 years. I started when I was 50 having gone through menopause, enjoying the crying, trying to bite family members heads off, and of course the ever popular hot flashes. My gyno suggested I try Activella and that it is safe. I am non smoker, mostly healthy. It helped me tremendously! I do get a lot of slack from friends and people who know everything. Every year when I go for my physical, I question my doctor on the safety of using this medication, and every year he assures me that it is safe and as long as it is helping you, to continue. I tried not taking it for few months and the old symptoms returned, so I'm back on it. Hope he was right!

Activella does contain hormones, Estradiol and Norethindrone, so it is still a hormone replacement therapy and carries the same possible risks as any of the others.

Having been taking it for so long, however, the problem you are going to run into when you try to stop taking it is the rebound effects, because your body is used to having this to balance the hormones and no longer knows how to do it on its own. That explains the symptoms you experienced.

It is best, though, to listen to your doctor, if it hasn't caused any other adverse problems.

I went last month for my yearly pap and my doctor recommended a transvaginal ultrasound. I did and they found a small cyst on my left ovary. I was told that there was nothing to worry about, just keep an eye on it. They want me to come back in 6months to check on it again. I asked my doctor if I should stop taking the activella and he said no it was not necessary.

This sounds like I had written it myself. I’ve been on Activella almost 10 yrs and am concerned about taking it so long. My doctor assured me it’s ok. I stopped taking it for awhile to see what would happen and it wasn’t good. Hot flashes were so bad I was pulling my hair out and crying. I just couldn’t take it. It’s been a few years now and I would like to try stopping again but I’m afraid to do so. I am 57 yrs old.

Has anyone experienced hair thinning while taking Activella and will it eventually stop or keep thinning?

Try taking it every other or every two days. Its the night drenches that I cannot handle, I too have been taking it for 6 years. Too much estrogen can cause hair to thin in pubescent girls, I dont know about women our age,
