I always found Actifed to be the only cold medicine that worked for me. Now I cant find it at any of my local drug stores even behind the counter. Is it still available? Even the pharmacist I talked to thought it was on the shelf and then realized they quit carrying it.

I've been using RXPalace out of Florida for several months now as a reoccurring order. (See my earlier post for details.) Ironically, I continue to find the WalAct at Walgreens periodically. So, I would recommend that you log a request for WalAct on-line for your store. They got it in shortly after I requested it although it might have been happenstance on the timing.

Walgreen's website says Wal-act is no longer available. Any other suggestions for those of us in the US without the means of shopping in Italy for our meds? (although it is tempting)

Actifed (or "Multi-action Actifed") is available in the UK...and in Italy you report. I think we can conclude that it is available generally in the EU.

All of a sudden (in the New Year) various formulations that include pseudoephedrine hydrochloride have shown up in branded and generic forms in Canadian pharmacies. The formulations differ (a night time version - i.e., drowsy - and day time versions) but they very closely resemble the old Actifed formulation. Not as strong: the recommended dose is double that of Actifed. And not long acting: 4-6 hours, not the 12 or 24 hours that alternatives offer. But given 4 hours that work as opposed to 12 hours that don't, it's a no-brainer.

The mystery is why the pseudoephedrine formulations that ordinary mortals like us take in moderation got mixed up with the industrial volumes of pseudoephedrine used as a precursor for uglier street drugs. Another mystery is why these formulations are now showing up after an absence of years. No matter. They seem to be back. Perhaps not quite the same but close enough to be happy about.

Count me in as one who swore by Actifed! It was the only thing that EVER worked when I would have my sinus attacks! After several years of trying everything else and today being in the middle of one of my attacks, I googled Actifed and found this site & message board!!! Yea!!!! I just went today not even an hour ago to my local Walgreens in Monroe, La. and they did have the Wal-Act...48 tablets for $9.99. I had to purchase from the pharmacy and could only buy one box and show my license! I would have gladly pulled my top over my head like they do in the Mardi Gras parades down here trying to get beads, just to get a box of the stuff! I'll report back tomorrow with my results!

Speaking of Actifed - my husband's favorite allergy med, what ever happened to the Contac 12 hour capsules - my favorite. I was so disappointed when it was discontinued.

My Walgreens contacted me and told me that they had received in five more packages and I could purchase one. It was in response to the "please stock this item" inquiry that I sent via the Walgreens site. I did choose to set up a re-occurring delivery from the Florida on-line option though since the supply of Wal-Act continues to be iffy. No response from the corporate Walgreens with long-term status, so if you want the product at your store, I'd submit a request via their web site to try to push it centrally.

Two of my Walgreens stores have said it is discontinued. They told us that most of their branded products are made by national companies so perhaps their supplier stopped making it?

I have commented several times but a year has passed since my last post. See comment # 38 in this thread (and I have been to the UK since that post and renewed our supply).

Thank you Amanda - I can confirm that RXPalace does have the Aprodine and it is the exact same formula as the old Actifed and Wal-Act. However, shipping is $10 but might be well worth it for some.

I found another site that shared that there are three other brands which are equivalent to Wal-Act: Genac and Aprodine and Rhino PRONT from the UK & GERMANY. rxpalace is a place that will ship the Aprodine in the US. It is out of Florida. Pricing is quite high - 14.98 + 10 sh for 2 pkgs of 24 - but it is supposed to be the same formula. Read about it in another thread. Hopefully, Walgreens will have a timeline for Wal-Act availability.

Here's what I heard from the pharmacist. When Actifed changed their formula, Walgreens didn't like the new one and kept making a generic version of the old formula (pseudoephedrine HCl 60 mg and Triprolidine HCl 2.5 mg). Their brand name is Wal-Act. Initially, when supply became limited, I was told that there was a problem with the ordering system. Then, I heard it was an issue with the manufacturer. The package that I have says it was made by LNK International. Looking on their website, they make many allergy and decongestant products - but Wal-Act or the drug combo is not listed. So, I don't know if Walgreens chose to move their business to a different contract manufacturer and there were issues during the transition or what, but Walgreens continues to say that it has not been discontinued but isn't currently in stock. I'm sending an inquiry to Walgreens via their website and hope to hear back soon.

Missy, Actifed has been discontinued for some time now.
Walgreens still carries their generic form of Actifed. It works pretty well. And the price is cheap too. I believe the box of 48 is approx $7.00. The name to ask for is Wal-Act. Because of the meth-heads, you have to get it during pharmacy hours, since it is behind the pharmacy counter. and depending on your state there may be limit restrictions.
Wal-Act has the same formula as the original Actifed.

I've taken antihistamines most of my life and Actifed is the one that works best for me. 12 hour meds may work for 4 hours, 24 hour meds may work for up to 8, so I don't waste my money on them. Nasal sprays give me nose bleeds. Wal-mart was the best place to get it for the price, but stopped carrying it years ago. CVS was my back-up and I just found out tonight they discontinued it. I am not looking forward to the repercussions of being off allergy meds. If anyone hears of a source, I hope they will post it here.

The really sad thing about all of this is that they have outlawed an effective remedy for those of us who need it, in order to try to kill the manufacture of meth. What has happened is that without psuedoephedrine the meth that is now being manufactured is so filled with poison that it is more addictive than the old stuff, and ravages the body in way the old stuff didn't. I am certainly not advocating the manufacture of meth, but no good has come from this, If the ban actually resulted in some good, i.e., the inability to make meth, at all, I would maybe say OK. However, we are suffering as are the meth users (obviously, for different reasons). Unfortunately, I don't think the law-makers will change their minds...since it may now be all about power. I see this as a complete lose-lose situation.
