Accutane Long Term Side Effects (Page 45) (Top voted first)

Updated

I have a son that took accutane 60 mg a day for six months in a row three years ago. Now after many trips to doctors over strange medical problems, it seems accuatne is the culprit medication that has caused servere joint and muscle pain, severe dry lips, redness in face, eye infections of own immune system attacking itself, systems of osteoarthritis in both shoulders, both wrist and right hand, blood in stool, possible hair loss, abnormal liver function test results in AST and ALT. My son went from being a high school football and track athlete while taking this medication three years ago to someone that is in constant pain just washing a car. After I have researched this drug extensively, I can't believe that the FDA allows this drug originally made for cancer patients to be marketed for teenagers with acne. All one has to do is look online what vitamin A overdose does to someone and then you have the results of what this medication has done to my son. This drug needs to be taken off them market ASAP and the drug companies that make it need to compensate all teenagers that they have possible ruined their future. Shame on them! What is going on here?

I took acutane three years ago. Not only did the drug work, but I have no occurring negative side effects as of now. I feel like people reading this are going to assume these symptoms are wide spread, but I think these are mostly individualized cases.

I have almost the exact situation. I started accutane my sophmore year and continued early into my junior year. I have never really put it all together until now. I have had severe sleep problems ever since and have extremely dry skin. I find myself puting lotion on all the time but nothing seems to take away the dry feel all the time. I also went to a gastroenterologist last year and had an endoscopy because I was having such severe stomache problems. I never realized it could be from accutane 15 years later but it makes a great deal of sense. Over the last few years I have also had severe dry eyes (especially in my right) and I have constant pressure in my right eye. I thought it was my sinuses but I have had cat scans done to show no infection. It is nice to finally figure out why all of these effects...

I agree. As far as the literature goes, majority of people on accutane have only minor side effects which go away after discontinuing use. But a few do have life-long major side effects.
Problem is it is like Russian Roulette and you don't know whether you will be in majority or minority...I have had acne since 17 and I am 32 now, and I am still scared to take accutane... But this acne is also killing me, don't know what to do...
BTW I have already tried other things, hasn't helped...

daughter took accutane in the 90's and we had no idea there would be problems. she just had neck spine surgery and they said it was DISH or diffuse idiopathic skeletal hyperostosis and she was going to need surgery again down the road due to her ligaments calcifying. checked out DISH and found it is attributed to ACCUTANE!!!! i am mad and looking for a lawyer!! they need to help with her medical espenses and her future surgical expenses. plus, the poor kid has had bad diarrhea since the 90's and has missed a lot of work from it, so am wondering about irritable bowel, too.

To Sharon;s Mom... Very SORRY to hear what your daughter has had to Endure since taking this poison!!!
I would be looking into a Lawyer for sure. I am not sure if there are any Lawsuits re: the Neck/Back information you provided however I do know there are Lawsuits that involve IBS and other Bowel Problems. Has she had a Colonoscopy? I am so Sad in reading about your daughter and what she has gone through. Prayers with Your Daughter and You. This ANGERS me knowing the Effects (Long Term) that this drug has. As Parents NONE of us would have allowed are Children to take a Drug that would have DESTROYED their Health in the way it has. I wish You the Best with everything. Please just Google Accutane and Bowel lawsuits. I am sure you find MANY a lawyer willing to take on your daughters case. As for the Neck/Back problem I am sure down the road there will be MANY more Lawsuits against accutane for OTHER Health Issues that people are now Suffering with, it's just a Matter of time before they CONNECT the Dots with the Other Long Term Side Effects from Accutane use. God Bless, Nancy

Sharons mom- You would have to find out if DISH was listed back then on the Rx info as a possible side effect. I know that is listed for a while, I know bone problems were listed as a side effect in the 80's. My heart goes out to you and your daughter. The reason I say the above is a you can try a lawyer, but may not get much help. I have bone issues myself.
Hope everyone is hanging in there

Hi Hina,

Thank You for posting the link to the FDA's side effect reports on Accutane. I reported a case over two years ago and I can’t even get a reply back that they read it. Unfortunately the FDA is partially controlled by people that work for or did work for Big Pharma. What a joke. We all must continue to post our stories to make people aware of the possible side effects from not only Accutane but also Amnesteem which is still available in the United States and handed out like candy on Trick or Treat night without doctors giving their full knowledge of using a Chemo drug to give to the youth of America.
Thanks for the post ! It is helpful to this thread.

Scott- I never heard from the FDA either, but I did hear back from the generic pharm that I also reported my effects too. You may try and do that even though it has been 2yrs. They sent me something in the mail. - Hope all is well

Hi Jen,
I dio have letter from the Pharma Company that was sent to Ryan's dermatoloigist admitting the Amnesteem caused his colon to dry up which caused substantial blood in his stool on the 5th month of taking med. I was only able to get this by asking for all copies from his dermatoligist on Ryan's 6 month's of treatment. ( about 50 pages )Thanks for the info.
Hope all is going well with you !

I have been on accutane treatment 3 seperate times between 1994 and 2008. I was always fine...until I started having stomach problems....stomach and intestines inflamed for no reason. I had pain in my joints and had an MRI and the doctor told me my MRI looked like an 80 year old, mind you at the time I was 35. I also experienced anxiety and depression for years and now I have been diagnosed with dermographism otherwise known as skin writing disease. Basically my skin cells over react to anything....being touched, hugged, toweling off after a shower and even when I'm doing nothing at all I will break out in hives all over. I can literally write my shopping list on my arm and 10 minutes later you will clearly be able to read it. Only after going onto a dermographism support board did I read that most of the people diagnosed had used Accutane. Accutane worked great for my acne but if I knew then what I know now I would have dealt with it in another way. I'm worried what other health problems might be coming my way from the effects of this drug, it's scary.

My son went on the Accutane treatment for three months for cystic acne when he was 16. When he was 19 he went on Isotretinion for a similar time frame, then again when he was 21. Within a year he began having psychological problems - hallucinations, psychotic symptoms, etc. Since then he disappeared for months, ended up in a mental institution across the country, and was judge-ordered injections for his severe case. The ongoing injections were supposed to help with these symptoms. Now after five horrific years of watching my wonderful, intelligent son go from being a self reliant, gifted math student to basically an empty shell of himself, my gentle, thoughtful son committed suicide.

My question is: Has anyone heard of such a side effect, or am I just trying to push the blame somewhere, anywhere? I am told this is an inherited, genetical illness, but there is no one in our extended family that has any mental problems. Can anyone help me with some information on this?

DEAR Grieving Mom,

I am so sorry to hear this about your son, my heart goes out to you. I feel it's the Accutane and/or it's other names it's under. Under Side Effect of Accutane (not sure it's still up anymore) it showed all the problems caused by this medicine and your son had the side effects that is the main side effect from it. It's a Chemo drug and has been use to treat cancer. A high does of Vitamin A which is very toxic. The makers where caught lying to the FDA way back when. It's sad that we don't hear all this stuff anymore about this drug. We the consumer are not being protected and the FDA also isn't on our side. I have so many health problems from this medicine and it matches about 95% of the people here if not more. My life since taking it hasn't been the same and I paid out of my pocket for medical expenses caused from this drug. I have a lawsuit, but really don't expect anything to come of it. The amount of people that loss their lives from this drug will shock you. Back when I check it was over 60 thousand and they still sell it under it's other names.

Let's fight to get these drugs off the market!!!

God Bless Your Son, and You All For Your Loss

my heart breaks for the loss of a child and potentially from this drug. i am not a sueing person, but somehow they have to be held accountable for the damage they have caused to so many people. has anyone had or heard of anyone having a successful case against these Accutane producers??

Hello grieving mom. My younger brother had just recently gone thru a manic schizophrenic episode. He also took accutane 7 years ago and we just recently saw him have a convulsion or seizure type of shaking or tremors mid june this year. It is very painful for me to see him go thru such a phase in his life where he is now 24 years old, spent his birthday at the mental institute. All coz he took accutane 7 Years ago. He went on 2 cycles of 6 months each. Believe me your son wouldn't have had this schizophrenic manic episodes if he hadn't taken isotreninoin. Our family does not have Schizophrenia in our blood. I know this because I have asked the oldest people in both sides of the family and none had such condition. My grandma even asked her sister who is now in her mid 90s. Based on my research on the web, my brother is suffering from vitamin A overdose which they call Hypervitaminosis A. It is very hard for doctors to even know what to do. I read that 4 types of vitamins stay in our body when we eat it. And those are Vitamin's A, D, E and K. I read that it causes schizophrenia if you intake lots of Vitamin A. Accutane or maybe I should start calling it Isotretinoin has caused my brother to have some sort of brain damage. And now he is taking all these schizo drugs, supposedly to help him get back his dopamine and control seratonin. He is on olanzapine and recently risperdal. He took abilify like a month ago for a week and all of a sudden he just stopped talking coz of that stupid medication the doctor gave him. We thought he was already recovering from the manic episodes when he was on olanzapine for 3 months, but after abilify for 5 days, things went downhill, so now he is on his first week of risperdal and still taking olanzapine. I am very freaked out with the side effects I just recently found online about risperdal. Now doctor wont even agree for him to stop taking it since he started already. But I think now the problem is if he ever does stop taking the meds, he will go thru relaps and suffer extreme depression or have tremors or possibly what we all fear.... I am so sorry for your loss. If maybe its not too hard for you I would like to ask if based on your observation, what medications did your son take that you think sort of helped him before the accident happened? Im sorry don't wanna sound rude regarding the question since I know you must be going thru a very hard time already. God help us all.
