I have a son that took accutane 60 mg a day for six months in a row three years ago. Now after many trips to doctors over strange medical problems, it seems accuatne is the culprit medication that has caused servere joint and muscle pain, severe dry lips, redness in face, eye infections of own immune system attacking itself, systems of osteoarthritis in both shoulders, both wrist and right hand, blood in stool, possible hair loss, abnormal liver function test results in AST and ALT. My son went from being a high school football and track athlete while taking this medication three years ago to someone that is in constant pain just washing a car. After I have researched this drug extensively, I can't believe that the FDA allows this drug originally made for cancer patients to be marketed for teenagers with acne. All one has to do is look online what vitamin A overdose does to someone and then you have the results of what this medication has done to my son. This drug needs to be taken off them market ASAP and the drug companies that make it need to compensate all teenagers that they have possible ruined their future. Shame on them! What is going on here?

So you are going to claim ignorance. The mechanisms of accutane are that it limits the telomerase enzyme. Telomeres shorten on the dna strand and therefore result in premature cell "DEATH". Simplified version of the mechanism for you. Doctors know they are killing people when they prescribe accutane. To claim ignorance is arrogance. Doctors make a lot off of this drug. I've never met a poor doctor. Retinol is a poison in massive amounts aka accutane. You are making a claim that thousands of doctors treating "disease" don't know anything about what they are treating. I find it hard to believe that all these doctors are that dumb. They claim diet which is responsible for metabolic reactions in are body is not beneficial. You need to open your mind to the truth. You've never lived with what all the people here live with every day. Cancer isn't killing people... it's the treatment. Doctors and pharmaceutical companies know exactly what they are doing. Most victims don't know they are byproducts of pharmaceutical side effects, because the whole medical field hides it. Do your research on what happens when you destroy bacteria in a human body.

Yes it was made for cancer initially and then they knew it worked for acne, but roche made it clear that since its a chemotherapy drug it was only for severe acne and for people who had no other hope with cystic acne which is rare and absolutely horrible. If they were money hungry they would have promoted it like crazy to everybody. Because it works wonders for acne and because the machanism of action is not understood and therefore nobody can prove that it destroys your body, it became a popular drug. I have a lot of doctors in my family and friends and they dont make anything off the pills they prescribe, this mentality of everyone-is-out-there-to-get-us is for closed-minded followers who can't think for themselves.

mitch.. I am just questioning the DNA theory and I agree with everything else people said on this discussion. Don't spread stupid theories that some kid made up on a forum, you can instead explain the symptoms and how accutane makes you feel and warn people that way but don't talk about things that are so beyond your understanding like "altering DNA". There are people that studied DNA all their life and they will not be able to understand what accutane does to it, but on some forum online someone is giving advice about how accutane alters DNA, it makes me smile. I know the history you are talking about I can read wikipedia and online forums too you are not the only one... but that has nothing to do with what I pointed out.. so that shows me how intelligent you are, *facepalm*. Even if the DNA theory is true, as far as we are concerned it is a shot in the dark

and how are doctors making money off us? the mechanism of action is just not understood or not discovered yet. Doctors are not evil and greedy they just lack the info they need. Just like cigarettes, after decades they finally discovered how bad they are for you, and they banned commercials and the medical community is warning us not to smoke, even if they could make a lot of money if we all smoke like crazy.

You need to do your homework before you leave reply's like your last one. FYI, it has been over 20 years since Accutane has been out and there is substantial evidence that Accutane, Amnesteem , Claravis and Sotret sold in United States do effect your DNA.
.Accutane works by altering DNA transcription. This decreases the size and output of sebaceous glands. It also makes the cells that are sloughed off into the sebaceous glands less sticky, and therefore reducing the ability to form blackheads and whiteheads. It also reduces the bacteria counts in the sebaceous gland and on the skins surface. These medications also destroy or alter you Telomeres.
Telomeres are considered an index of cell age and are like a clock of the cell’s lifespan. Telomere shortening means the cell’s lifespan is shortening. Recent research shows that telomere shortening plays an important role in human disease and mortality. More than 20 studies have shown associations between shorter telomere length and various types of cardiovascular disease (e.g., stroke, heart attacks) and diabetes. Shorter telomeres have also been associated with cancer, osteoporosis, cognitive function, dementia, and arthritis ( accutane long term side effects). On the flip-side, long telomeres are related to healthy aging and overall longevity.

Initially, some drug company's do there own test to report to the American Medical Journal which is where your physicians study to become doctors. Your Dr. gets a $3000 kick back for prescribing the drug, drug company's know it will take years before all is known of the side effects from certain drugs ( like Accutane and it's generic brands). Open your eye's to the world around you, everything is not as it seems.

Yeah Vlad just like conventional doctors and pharmaceutical companies don't know what cancer is. haha You are a very funny man. If we play dumb maybe the general population will buy it. Heck let's bully all the natural doctors helping people. We can even claim we have pills that work for diseases, but we don't know how or why they work. We the people aren't buying it anymore. They've destroyed our lives, killed our family, and raped our health. No more will we accept their lies in the name of "we didn't know."

Vlad.. Actually it was made for pancreatic cancer and brain tumours.. Because peoples skin looked well they decided to give it as an acne drug to whom ever.. It is just a money maker . So maybe you should get your facts right before you shoot people down.

how do you know it alters your DNA? we have no idea what it does nobody knows what it does so stop saying stupid crap you read online. Doctors are not as bad as you think they don't purposely give kids accutane to make money off them, keep your opinions to yourself. I know a lot of doctors that help and do great things. The pill was invented to try and help kids with acne... it just happened to destroy our bodies in ways we don't understand yet. Maybe in 20 30 50 years we will understand exactly what it does.

please for the love of life do not ever let your kids take this poison. Pimples are just hormones. kids can just outgrow them and eat a better diet and wash their faces regularly and not pick on their pimples. Do not let your child take this poison ever. My brother took this and now has suffered some brain damage. It will not cure your pimples either. It will alter your dna and destroy your body forever. There is no way to reverse the damage it does to your body. I hope that victims be strong and just hope for the best that your body can just keep coping with the damage. There is no more normal life after accutane. everything will go downhill once you start taking this medicine and listening to your doctors isnt exactly healthy for you. It doesnt mean that just because they went to school and took the exams and passed it to become a doctor means that they know what is good for your child. It doesnt give them the right to prescribe this horrific poison to your kid. They give this so that you will forever be burdened to keep going to doctors all your life after accutane. It is a sad cycle. My family has spent lots of money just for check ups for my brother. All the time and efforts.... instead of being able to do other things to improve our lives, we are stuck in the routine of just trying to survive and help with the depression. I hope a little acne wont discourage you from living your real life. Life doesnt end because of some pimples you have. It ends though once you start taking accutane. God help us all and give us strength to keep on fighting this life battle.

I am a parent that was in the same situation you where in 7 years ago. Please read the comments on here very carefully. Please try alternative ways. Look at this site I found today....naturalhealthyconcepts.com/health-library/us/assets/health-condition/acne-vulgaris/~default.
There are diets to try also. The question is not if someone that takes Amnesteem or any of the other generic versions of Accutane, is just a matter of when.

Remember its a Chemo Drug being prescribed to teenagers with acne. Please read and possible let your son read this post very carefully so he and you both understand the risk. Good Luck with your decision.

Hi I'm a concerned mom, just wondering how your child is doing now, in regards to having taken Accutane. My son is currently going thru really bad acne and we have tried everything, with little success. His dermatologist has suggested Accutane, but Im very aprehensive about this, I know in the end the decision will be his since he is 18. but I am gathering as much info on this med as possible...the long term effects sound horrific, and it doesnt sound like it leaves your system after taking it. Rather it does horrible damage that you have to live with for the rest of your life...

@Stepher The challenge would be proving that your issues are directly related to Accutane. I'd think that the more time that goes by, the more difficult it would be to prove.

Accutane lowers your immune system and therefore opens a door for a wide range of opportunistic organisms such as parasites. I know, it seems far fetched. I never thought in a million years that I would have ended up with something like this, but I did. I am going through the same thing as you are, and doctors are little help. Most of my symptoms are almost identical to yours. Based on my experience, you can get some LL magnetic clay detox bath. It's like $50 but that way you can see most of what is coming out of you. There are different ones to choose from. I order mine from: naturalhealthyconcepts.com because of the seals, good reviews, and their bbb accredited. Actually, a lot of our symptoms sound like chronic Lyme disease too. I doubt any doctor would check you for this unless you specifically ask, same is true is parasite hyper-infection. So you would have to mention it to your doctor. Doctors don't have the time to properly diagnose. And after all of the research I've done, I understand why! It is very time consuming.

Thanks for the response! I have been to many different doctors and specialists. All say "sorry, I think you must just get sick easily. I don't know what it is." I've been put on all sorts of short-term medications and nothing helped/helps.
Thinking about going to see a gastroenterologist about possible IBS.
You're not sure I could get a valid lawsuit (if any at all) unless I have either Chrons/IBS/etc.?

Have you acutally seen a physican and got a diagnosis? Say like psuedo tumor, diabetes or chron's or IBD? Really the only lawsuits have been for chron's and IBD before it was listed as a side effect.

I am wondering if anyone has information about lawsuits/etc.
I am 22 years old and took accutane when I was 17 years old. For the past 4 years I have experienced MANY side affects. I have had a migraine/severe headache every single day. I don't remember what it is like to feel good and be pain free. I have had some intestinal problems as well and have actually only recently been experiencing severe stomach pain/ bloating/ etc. I have had a continuous sore throat/runny nose for the past 4 years as well. I have experienced severe body aches/ pain/ fatigue. My vision has changed. I have back/ neck/ joint pain. Also severe nausea.
I was extremely active growing up and did not experience these symptoms.

My life has changed drastically because of this medicine. I have missed a lot of work because of these side affects.
I am looking to gain financial compensation for the pain this is causing me.

Anyone who can help with lawsuits, anyone who has more information about lawsuits they may have filed/etc. would be greatly appreciated!!

I just want to feel normal.

Now that you are over 18 years of age, you can go to a doctor, and if you want, not have your parents know. Get checked out again by a doctor to find out what is causing your hives.
