Accutane Long Term Side Effects (Page 37)

I have a son that took accutane 60 mg a day for six months in a row three years ago. Now after many trips to doctors over strange medical problems, it seems accuatne is the culprit medication that has caused servere joint and muscle pain, severe dry lips, redness in face, eye infections of own immune system attacking itself, systems of osteoarthritis in both shoulders, both wrist and right hand, blood in stool, possible hair loss, abnormal liver function test results in AST and ALT. My son went from being a high school football and track athlete while taking this medication three years ago to someone that is in constant pain just washing a car. After I have researched this drug extensively, I can't believe that the FDA allows this drug originally made for cancer patients to be marketed for teenagers with acne. All one has to do is look online what vitamin A overdose does to someone and then you have the results of what this medication has done to my son. This drug needs to be taken off them market ASAP and the drug companies that make it need to compensate all teenagers that they have possible ruined their future. Shame on them! What is going on here?

My advise to you, if you acne is gone, throw the rest of the pills down the toilet. My son made it 5 months with no major problems at that point. One the 6 month, he became to have significant blood in his stool and never been the same since. STOP NOW, no need take this med anymore, Please do not take any more chances.

I hear ya... I feel like i can relate to your son in a way with the sports and how that must have effected him and his sports. I wont be taking anymore accutane.

anyone know the effect of stopping accutane then starting it back up? and or missing two weeks in the middle of the regiment then startign back up?

Took accutane forever, worst was the dry lips, no matter how much you chap stick moisturize whatever it's like fighting a losing battle, it's like Sisyphus trying to keep them from getting nasty cause its drying from the inside out, might as well try and keep your hair from growing...

Garret, thanks for responding to me. My son wakes up with knees stiff every morning after moving around for wahile it subsides. After the day they get sore. Are you off the meds now? My son is off now for about a year. Thanks, Larry

Garrot,
As far as I know, with my son at least, he quit taking Amnesteem the day he almost passed out at a HS Track Event and then taken to the ER with significant blood in his stool. Their is no process of cutting back , my understanding is you just quit.

Garrot. My son only took this for 6 wks before he started with joint pains. He got worse over two more weeks so i made him Stop taking the meds. So after 8 weeks on the drug my son was in real bad pain in his joints etc,. I have previously put what problems he's had on earlier posts.

u all being so very concerned about me taking the medicine........
I have decided not to take this medicine.
My Nurse prac. did tell me that i might suffer mild joint pain, drylips, dry scalp, dry skin for a short period of time.
But as i read the posts n did more research,, i found this is actually a drug used to treat cancer n by chance it was found to treat acne too.
I m surprised with so many severe side effects why do the doctors prescibe it n that too for teenagers..

I was reading your post I too have swelling on my head. I was only on accutane for 6 weeks. I work in the medical field and all the doctors I work with said it was fairly safe. I started having severe memory loss I would forget what I was saying mid sentence. I have had headaches in the past but accutane took it to a whole different level. I now have pain in my bones and since taking it my hips have not been the same.

Jazzy. My son has also suffered the same as you. Hopefully it will subside. Unfortunately some people especially some ethnicities suffer worse than others.
As this is a vitamin A overdose how many watch wat you eat to reduce the vit A intake? And do you feel it makes a difference? As i try to reduce my sons vit A intake and have noticed hes not getting the head pains and some of the other effects he was suffering. I hope and pray he gets better as well as all those suffering from taking this money making Poision ! Vit A can stay in the body so please watch what you eat it really could make a difference. Bless you All !

I just also want to say thanks to those who replied to my first message. It's good to know there is a little army fighting against tihs horrible drug. I just read the NCC article again for the 2nd time (found it orignally last Sept) and i've got that deep feeling again.. basically telling me how bad things are going to continue to get (could it get any worse?), my health will keep going down and notig can be done. The deep despair I feel....

As mitch said, some/a lot of accutane sufferes feel worse after certain foods. Anything hot/spicy I can't eat. I took this caynenne ticnture over 6 months and it made me feel extremely weak and could hardly move around or do anything. I was so bad that luckily i forgot to take it one day and noticed a slight improvement, and only then made the connection. I orginally thought cayenne pepper would boost my circulation, but made it worse!! I can only assume Accutane badly effected my nervous system, which im guessing hot/spicy foods act on. i have rosacea from accutane too and i think this is down to do with problems with the nervous system and the immune system (which i have a low white blood count). Also theres the olive oil connection from another forum where a lot of accutane suffers all found they had in common. before i found about this i noticed i felt very bad after taking olive oil for up to a week (i was fine with olive oil a few years after tane then it hit). Then theres high vitamin A foods which I beleive watermelon is, again feel bad after... side effects of these bad foods are feeling jittery, weak, eyes feel even worse, more dehydrated etc.But it's all these food connections which all Accutane sufferes have discovered by telling each other these specific food problems live the olive oil/vitamin a, other specific foods that CONFIRM Accutane is the problem, to any doubters out there who seemingly worship this poison.

I think garrot made a line saying "take accutane, play sport, eat ok and you'll be fine" this is a really dangeroud and stupid thing to say. How do you know that takes you up on that advice will be fine? Just based on your experience, when you are still taking the drug? Unfortunately it was people like you that I listened to before I took Accuane over these horror storeies, bbecause according to people like you, these horror stories were extremely rare, accutane can't be proven to of caused all your problems.. just blame everything on Accutane. I took the drug.. and before I know it, so quickly, so easily, my life is over before I have a chance to do anything about it. Over with. And i guess that's a bad part of the internet, listening to people who think they know what they are talking about and overshadowing the truths. Again can we also not have people wishing that the FDA don't ban this drug. It's like a stab in the back hearing this. . Instead of coming here just live your life to the full, you'll never begin to understand what so easily could of happened to you....

Kim, Have to say, VERY Happy reading this that you will NOT take this Drug! I can only Hope others like you will do the research and look into this drug as you did. I wish my Son or I had looked FURTHER than we did. We TRUSTED the Dr., SHAME ON US!!!!!!!!! Today we live the Nightmare one MORE day~Wish You the BEST Kim :-)

Hi Nancy,
I as a mother can feel ur pain.
But trust me the bad days will vanish soon.
In my everyday prayers i shall pray for ur son to get healthy again.
once again thanx everyone for the suggetions.
U guys saved me from falling prey to this drug.

yes i did stop taking the med. Clorvis was the brand i took. alot of my pains have gone away, so one can only hope that they dont get to many problems. ill keep updated.
