Accutane Long Term Side Effects (Page 19) (Top voted first)
UpdatedI have a son that took accutane 60 mg a day for six months in a row three years ago. Now after many trips to doctors over strange medical problems, it seems accuatne is the culprit medication that has caused servere joint and muscle pain, severe dry lips, redness in face, eye infections of own immune system attacking itself, systems of osteoarthritis in both shoulders, both wrist and right hand, blood in stool, possible hair loss, abnormal liver function test results in AST and ALT. My son went from being a high school football and track athlete while taking this medication three years ago to someone that is in constant pain just washing a car. After I have researched this drug extensively, I can't believe that the FDA allows this drug originally made for cancer patients to be marketed for teenagers with acne. All one has to do is look online what vitamin A overdose does to someone and then you have the results of what this medication has done to my son. This drug needs to be taken off them market ASAP and the drug companies that make it need to compensate all teenagers that they have possible ruined their future. Shame on them! What is going on here?
I just turned 40 and took it in the 90s and am dealing with similar symptoms. Degenerative disc disease, interstitial cystitis, knees and shoulders, terrible soreness whichever side I sleep on.
Viki, I also suffer from many problems that are linked to accutane. I have had a kidney transplant 14 years ago. My kidneys scared over 12 years until they were gone. I also have degenerative arthritis through out and unexplainable pain and weakness. I dont know if it is from all of my medical problems, but I forget where I am or what I am doing out of the blue, which causes people to get very frustrated at me. I found a company called Young Living that sells natural essential oils, I am not trying to sell this, it has been some help to me. They dont claim to cure problems just help in wellness. I dont think it is a fast help but more like a continued help.
I completely understand the lack of reproduced cells and the terrible effects it has on the body... I have a lack of Dopamine production due to, what I believe, caused by accutane... I am now 37 and have a disease that has altered not only my body, but the future of my whole family...
My niece took this drug and got osteosarcoma (bone cancer)in her knee. It spread so they took her leg. It spread to her lungs...twice now two surgeries...but her skin is flawless...does that answer your question?
Yes Haley,
After taking a third round of Accutane I also developed vulvodynia and a increase in my IBS symptoms. I have no doubt Accutane caused the vulvodynia and my dermatologist agrees. There is very little information on this.

This sounds like the problems people were having from Retin-A in the 80s and 90s. I see that the generic has the word "retin" in it, so.... you guys really should get together and file a class action suit. SERIOUSLY
Correct me if I'm wrong but isn't Accutane is essentially a retin-A overdose...
wow. i didnt know. i was prescribed retin-A as a teen in the 80s. i have fibromyalgia now, along with digestive issues and cluster migraines. i wonder if the two are related.
in an earlier reply, i had stated that i was not directly affected by this drug. BUT, i did take retin-A as a teen/young adult. i am now in my 40s and i have digestive issues, fibromyalgia and migraines. anyone know or at least have a theory at to whether these things are related to using the retin-A? from what i hear, retin-A was a sort of precursor to accutane. there was retin-A, and then they got rid of that in favor of accutane, but that they are basically the same thing. VITAMIN A OVERDOSE in other words.
thanks
I took accutane only few days and small dosage (5mg per day); i stopped it because i couldn't cope with the side effects (anemia, tiredness, joint paint...) some weeks after stop it i've begun to have facial flushing, over the month the flushs increase at a stage which they degrade my daily life deeply (imagine you can't talk to someone without turn red constantly...)
over the years the multiple daily flushs create a baseline redness by stimulating the development of blood vessels, the more i flush and the more i'm red and the more i'm red, the more i'm prone to flush and blush... it's a vicious circle...
i'm able to relieve my face by the use of laser (especially vbeam) but the flushs return always and i must do session every years
it has been 5years and a half and the flushs are always here and doesn't seem to decrease, they have strongly disable me and i can say my life will nothing to do with my actual life if i've not taken this POISON
I took retina a in the 80"s. Now I too have fibro, digestive probs, migraines and terrible joint pain. Humm. Could be related
Hello I just read your post about accutane and Sjogrens and think I am in the same boat. I took accutane at age 26 because I was getting large cysts. Then around age 27 so after the accutane my contacts felt dry and that progressed so that age 29 I was completely debilitated by the dry eyes. Now I am a 58 year old female who has tried everything. Plugs at first then went on to have all 4 tear ducts csuterized just had Lipiflow a month ago seems to be kicking in. Would love to hear about other accurate users with permanent dry eyes. But it could also be upsetting. Did anyone else develop dry eyes AFTER stopping accurate?
Happy to hear you found something that works for you! if it makes you feel happy then I think it's great progress :) some people do very well on low carb diets! Not Impressed with who just shot you down for sharing
I have had the pain in the liver, stomach and back for many years after Accutane. Turns out it is gas trapped in the stomach and causes pressure on many organs. I have used inner filet organic aloe juice and it really helps gut problems. I am thinking that, all the tissues in the body are dry and the mucous membranes do not function properly. The aloe vera provides a slick coating and the gas is expelled more easily.
I should mention that there is also a bacterium that causes minute fractures of the lower spine and causes the low back pain. This cannot be determined on a regular x-ray. The bacteria is called P. acnes. It's hard to get rid of but taking Sulfameth & Tmp tabs or doxycycline hyclate are good for it. I would not be able to walk if not for these two antibiotics. The back pain in the upper area is helped with the aloe vera.
I am 37 and took Accutane when I was 19. I dealt with constipation, IBS and infertility for a decade. At 30 I became so ill with abdominal issues and severe headaches and joint pain. They figured out I had leaky gut syndrome and a bad candida yeast infection. I could no longer tolerate gluten, dairy, or yeast. The leaky gut and infertility definitely due to Accutane. You should see a naturalpathic doctor. Mine saved my life. Research leaky gut syndrome. Oh and Accutane has been linked to ulcerative colitis, Chron's and other issues. Luckily I don't have those, but I continue to have unexplained abdominal pain all the time. My digestion is all messed up. Still chronically constipated. I too had the gall bladder removed at 24 because of a stone. Now I'm showing signs of Sjogrens. Got to get tested for that next. Accutane wrecks us!
I took this poison in 2009. I'm almost 28. And still have issues to this day. I have facial flushing dry dry eyes skin nose mouth scalp
Sleep issues, Cold extremities, Acne comes and goes. I have to apply olive oil all over my face and it's still dry. I scrape it all the time.
Restasis failed and xiidra doesn't work. Eye plugs. Sjorgens was told I don't have every symptom yet. I'm a male mind u. Spent 6 years housebound after this drug. Was told I had thyroiditis from an ultrasound in 2013. Levothyroxine made me go from 150-119 pounds, so I stopped that med and was told my thyroid was normal lmao. Medical mystery. On a gluten wheat egg dairy free diet. See no improvements 4 months into it. I am depressed everyday and anxious OCD bdd now. No meds work. I've been on soooooo many NT to mention I refuse to have more issues from meds. I think we should all meet up and ambush the Accutane company and force them to do something. My heart and gut says nothing will ever get better. I mean the older you get the more u age. Pray for all of us, this is bulls***. And I'm sorry so many of u have lost lives or know ppl who have took their own life from this poison.
I feel your pain. Although I always had anxiety before this drug, it's nothing like I do now. I have to say I feel my mental and isolation drf stems from this drug. I look so different now and feel different.
What side effects do u have still? Some stuff can improve mentally.
I've had Insomnia myself for a decade now.
I have been on roaccutane/accutane 2 times. Once for 9 months at 16 and then again for 10 months at 18. Had a very dysfunctional life since then with depression, anxiety, insomnia, nocturia, high intolerance to medication and so on. I wonder if it played a role.
