I took accutane almost 14 years ago as a teenager. I am now a 32 year old woman who has just been diagnosed with infertility that they believe is linked to autoimmune issues. I truly believe that accutane is the cause of this; from the research that I have done it seems that accutane has been linked to other thyroid-related diseases, but that they have not yet been able to prove a link between accutane and infertility. There are, however, actually more people like me out there than I originally thought. Being diagnosed with ovarian dysfunction has been a horrific, horrific blow. And while there was plenty of information about accutane and birth defects, no one ever mentioned a possibility of future infertility. I was a teenager! This is a tragedy and I believe something should be done about it. If you too have been affected diagnosed with infertility and have taken accutane, please email me. There are plenty of suits against accutance. If there are enough of us, we can come together to do the medical research and get the help we now need.

My son took Accutane for 7 months, 10 years ago. The risk of Infertility was explained in detail on several pieces of literature, and we had a long discussion with several doctors about the possibility. I am surprised to hear about anybody who DIDNT know it was a possibility. It was something we had to consider very seriously.

What you say about checking for other causes of infertility and also to have a control group is very important. However, much of your information / facts are to do with the medication in the last 10 years. Many women in this forum are in their late 30's and early 40's when it was prescribed much differently. Neither my skin specialist, nor my GP ever prescribed anything except an alcohol wash to dab on my skin and then Accutane. I was on accutane for several YEARS - my acne wasn't "severe" my Mom wanted me to take it for vanity / cosmetic reasons! I think it would be interesting to survey all the women on this forum and also a control group - it's not a huge number in this forum and could be easily done. Create a "survey monkey link",post it to the forum and watch the results come in . . . then we might have some better idea of what is really going on. You're the doctor and should have some idea what questions should be asked. I'd be keen to participate.

Hi, I took accutane in my mid twenties. In my later twenties I have dealt with extreme infertility and spent over $50,000 to have a baby, because so many died. Not only are my accutane related symptoms getting worse with age, but my baby has also dealt with life threatening side effects of accutane. I had no idea this drug would make me infertile or pass down the side effects to my off spring. It is horrible!

I took accutane when I was 15 for 6 months and also have been diagnosed with infertility, and my childhood friend who also took accutane - same thing.

My husband and I both took Accutane when we were younger and we were both diagnosed with infertility when we sstarted trying to conceive. Now my sister says my nephew is starting Accutane. I would really like to save him this heartache if possible.

I took accutane when I was a junior in college. I am now 36 years old. My husband and I have been trying to conceive for the past 2 years. We have been referred to an infertility specialist.... I just happened to do a search to look into this myself... Please do keep me posted on any additional information. Hugs.

If you read the study carefully, the women with acne had approximately 50% higher AMH levels. After isotretinoin (Accutane) treatment the levels were approximately 25% higher. Since the higher levels represent increased male hormone levels and may be correlated with acne. Also, with infertility. This study seems to suggest that by lowering the elevated AMH levels, Accutane may improve ovarian function and improve fertility.

It's not clear how the authors derive their conclusion that normalizing abnormally high AMH indiccates a detrimental effect on the ovaries. If you quiet down an abnormally active ovary, you could define it as a detrimental effect, but it seems more logical to call a therapeutic effect.

I am 42 and have been trying to conceive for 12 years. I am classified as unexplained. I took accutane at age 14 and I believe this is the cause for my infertility. It is extremely heartbreaking, I am in Canada, but would be interested in knowing more about this!!

So happy I came across this post. I took Accutane in my mid teens for painful, deep "zits." We tried to get pregnant for over a year, finally went on Clomid and my first pregnancy resulted in a Molar Pregnancy, which is rare, and resulting cancer FROM the pregnancy (even MORE rare). After waiting a year from finally being cancer free, I got pregnant and was blessed w/ a little boy. Been trying again for over a year and a half for a second on Clomid/Femara, and nothing has worked. I TRULY believe EVERY SINGLE PROBLEM I've had w/ pregnancies is bc of ACCUTANE!!! I am SOOOO PISSED!!!!

I am with you. not sure what your e-mail addy is but mine is {edited for privacy} and would love to go after Accutane...this needs to come off the market. I feel horrible for all the teens that are on it right now and are oblivious. Awareness needs to be done.

I took accutane for just one year as a 17 year old which cleared my acne. I am now 23 and have not had a single period (not even spotting) since. Tests confirm that there is nothing structurally wrong with my reproductive system.

I am 33 and have been trying for over 3 years even tried IUI. I have one daughter at 24 and when I started breast feeding I broke out bad and took accutane. They said everything seems fine in my testing, but still no baby

I took accutane has a teenager and to this day I am paying the price. I had a miscarriage at 23 at only six weeks along and suffered a horrible bout of depression afterwords. I am going on 30 this year and my husband and I want nothing more than to have four kids and raise a family. I don't know if fertility drugs can help and we are one of those couples who cannot afford them anyways. Seriously people should call one of those attorneys and see if they have a claim.

I had a form of POF - very high FSH levels, but still ovulating. If you are still ovulating at all, please try Lipiodol Flushing technique as this helped me conceive naturally twice even with elevated FSH. Google this - it has a better success rate that IVF and is quite simple - only you do need an egg or two. Seems I had at least 2 left.

Hi,
I've been doing a research on accutane and fertility, because I was diagnosed with POF... And I am just 22 years old... This is very frustrating.. I took accutane when I was 17 years old and remeber back then my mom convencing me not to take it!!! Wish I just listened to her... And now she believes that POF is linked with the pills I have taken... It's important to mention that I have had my periods regularly before taking the pills and after I stopped them my periods gone crazy till the day I stopped getting them at all...
