Accutane And Infertility (Page 11) (Top voted first)
UpdatedI took accutane almost 14 years ago as a teenager. I am now a 32 year old woman who has just been diagnosed with infertility that they believe is linked to autoimmune issues. I truly believe that accutane is the cause of this; from the research that I have done it seems that accutane has been linked to other thyroid-related diseases, but that they have not yet been able to prove a link between accutane and infertility. There are, however, actually more people like me out there than I originally thought. Being diagnosed with ovarian dysfunction has been a horrific, horrific blow. And while there was plenty of information about accutane and birth defects, no one ever mentioned a possibility of future infertility. I was a teenager! This is a tragedy and I believe something should be done about it. If you too have been affected diagnosed with infertility and have taken accutane, please email me. There are plenty of suits against accutance. If there are enough of us, we can come together to do the medical research and get the help we now need.
Good day louis I am Dr Herman from Victoria i read your message from the net and i wish to help you on, your martenitey statues if you can contact me for more informations on your problems i am base on fimales afers ok my number is {edited for privacy} i will be waiting to here from you thank
To Disty: I absolutely understand your point--if the research is not there, then folks like me have no leg to stand on. And, yes, if we had such bad acne that we considered accutane in the first place, what was going on with our immune systems at the time to cause it? However, I think the biggest question is for those of us who took the medicine at a young age and then didn't try to concieve until our late 20's into our 30's. If the drug labels are now stating that it may cause infertility in dogs, then they (the drug company) better start doing more research regarding long-term side effects on humans. Thank you, Mitch UK, for the lead on "acutaneaction". I will look into that group.
Hi Louise - I was the one who mentioned about the "infertility in dogs" info on the sheet that came with the medication. This was not recently. I think it was in 1996 or 1997, which is when my sons, who are now 30 and 29 (and both infertile) took it. Unfortunately, as I understand it, this would be a very difficult issue to research, which means it's unlikely that anyone is going to do so.
I took Accutane when I was about 19 and in college. I am now 34. Just found out I have low sperm count and also 0 normal sperm out of 100 for sperm morphology. My wife and I have been married for 10 years and have been infertile.
I'm happy to see this forum and fortunate that so many have shared their stories.
I took Accutane when I was 22 for about 3 months. I've been devastated going through 3 IVF cycles, I've been pregnant 2 times and miscarried both pregnancies at 8 weeks. My Doctor believes it to be poor egg quality on my part. My family has no history of infertility of any kind.
I can now only imagine that my short use of Accutane contributed to my unexplained infertility. Tragic for all young women who hoped for improved skin and ended up not having the chance of having their own family!
This drug needs more research and adequate warnings to include infertility. Class action law suit against Accutane should include all people who are suffering infertility.
To the person considering it, Don't take accutane. I developed what I thought was sore muscles (also warned on the paper for side effects) ultimately it became a autoimmune disease that put me in a wheelchair. Chronic pain since 1997. My son asked me if he should take it. I told him not to. Now I'm reading abt infertility. Fortunately he took my advice. (the one time in his life LOL) & now I have gorgeous twin grand children. I'm in constant pain but lucky, I guess.
I am 30 and have been trying to conceive for 3 years. I've done 2 years of infertility treatment including 8 IUI's. I have had one miscarriage. I took accutane 3 times (6 months each): once at 16, again at 19 and then when I was 25. Obviously accutane does not "cure" acne. "Heartbroken" does not scatch the surface of the pain that my infertility has caused my husband & me.
Is there really a link between accutane & infertility.....OR is it our hormones?
Hormone problems cause acne. Hormone problems also cause infertility.
Not to provide TMI, but at some point my body stopped producing peak type cervical mucus--which is necessary for conception. Did my hormones cause this or is it an adverse effect of accutane? Any thoughts? PS-my heart breaks for all of you beautiful ladies who know the pain of acne + infertility. How can we cheer ourselves up...other than discourage others from this yucky drug?
Is there a lawsuit? If so...I want in. I too have a huge, fertile family. I am the only one who took Accutane & I am the only one who is infertile.
My cervical mucous has been drastically reduced as well. Also, I recently experienced a miscarriage and was just diagnosed with a blood clotting disorder (APS). The disorder is autoimmune and taking certain meds can put you at risk. Accutane was not on that list (yet!), but I'm sure it's not out of the realm of possibilities. The clotting disorder caused my miscarriage, along with my daughter's premature birth, intrauterine growth restriction, my placental abruption, and restricted bloodflow in the cord.
I took Acutane when I was 13. I am now 33 and struggling with infertility. My husband and I are in our fifth year of treatments, and recently suffered our third failed ivf. The last ivf cycle was with the use of donor eggs from my sister. My sister is nine years younger than me, but her eggs were not as good as we hoped. She also took Accutane as a teenager. I truly believe there is a correlation and am livid that I may have jeopardized my future because the facts weren't presented. I am very interested in moving forward with action against the makers of this drug.
My husband took accutane in 1989 at age 15. He was diagnosed with a zero sperm count 10 years ago.
They give it through a programme in the USA. It is also given here in UK by the Dermatologists. They dnt tell u the joint pains are longterm either. My son was given thir Poision 10 month ago. After 8wks he started with pains whilst taking it. He can't walk far now. Doesn't sleep. Horrendous migraine I had to take him to hospital. Had to drop out of college. This Poision has DESTroYeD my sons life. He is only 17
Sara, I agree with you that everyone suffering any kind of infertility, that had previously been prescribed Accutane, have a format to consider legal action against the pharmaceutical company that obviously did not provide accurate warnings. Is there a contact who is heading up compiling information from those of us affected?
Valerie. Check out Accutane action . They are trying to get the truth m how the drug works etc fr6 the manufacturer Roche
It is still being prescribed.
My doctor believes my fertility problems are a result of Accutane, she just can't prove it at this time. She thinks within the next 20 years, we will find out more about the devastating effect of the drug. She agrees with me that the drug company won't want to fund the research, but a law firm would. We need to start getting our stories together & support each other.
I took Accutane for a year and a half around age 15. I have unexplained infertility. I also never had my period during most of the Accutane treatment. I have also developed IBS.
Hi! I am a healthy 28 year old who has been trying to get pregnant for two years. I constantly have such bad joint pain that they have tested me numerous time for Lupus. I've also been diagnosed with unexplained infertility. I took Accutane when I was fifteen. I'm wondering if it is what is causing my issues today! I'm tired of going to doctors who say I have classic symptoms of an autoimmune disease but can't say I gage one for sure and tired of seeing a fertility specialist. Is there a class action suit pending?
