Accutane And Infertility (Page 32) (Top voted first)
UpdatedI took accutane almost 14 years ago as a teenager. I am now a 32 year old woman who has just been diagnosed with infertility that they believe is linked to autoimmune issues. I truly believe that accutane is the cause of this; from the research that I have done it seems that accutane has been linked to other thyroid-related diseases, but that they have not yet been able to prove a link between accutane and infertility. There are, however, actually more people like me out there than I originally thought. Being diagnosed with ovarian dysfunction has been a horrific, horrific blow. And while there was plenty of information about accutane and birth defects, no one ever mentioned a possibility of future infertility. I was a teenager! This is a tragedy and I believe something should be done about it. If you too have been affected diagnosed with infertility and have taken accutane, please email me. There are plenty of suits against accutance. If there are enough of us, we can come together to do the medical research and get the help we now need.
The most important question is whether all these issues are more common in severe acne patients treated with isotretinoin than in comparable patients not treated with isotretinoin. It may even be less common in isotretinoin treated patients.
I took accutane as a teenager. I am now 40 and have been trying to get pregnant for 3 years. I have tried 3 rounds of IVF but have not been successful. I was never told that accutane could cause fertility issues. I am just devastated and I do not have the money for donor eggs or adoption.
RESULTS:
All of the spermiogram parameters changed positively (p?0.05). There was no significant change in the hormone levels.
CONCLUSION:
Systemic isotretinoin has a positive effect on male fertility. Since the hormone levels did not change significantly, this positive effect of isotretinoin is not via the hypothalamic-pituitary-gonadal axis but can be due to its regenerative and proliferative effects on the testes.
For those interested, the following are titles of studies available online that are related to Accutane's effects on female fertility:
"Long-term effect of systemic isotretinoin on female fertility"
"The Possibly Reversible Isotretinoin Effect of Decreased Ovarian Reserve in Sprague-Dawley Albinos: Part I, Biochemical Analyses"
The effect of isotretinoin on ovarian reserve based on hormonal parameters, ovarian volume, and antral follicle count in women with acne
"Decreased ovarian reserve in female Sprague–Dawley rats induced by isotretinoin (retinoic acid) exposure"
"The effects of isotretinoin on the ovarian reserve of females with acne"
Or there is an underlying inflammatory disease, which leads to severe acne, IBD and infertility and has nothing to do with Accutane.
What percentage of women who have fertility problems have never taken Accutane? 99%, 99.9%?
All 5 sound like they have severe androgen excess and that causes the hair loss, ovarian failure and of course caused the severe acne that required Accutane.
I do understand, I just don't believe it.
I'm sorry for your loss, but blaming isotretinoin you took 25 years ago instead of an autoimmune problem you have now, seems somewhat illogical. Also at age 40, you chances of becoming pregnant with no health problems is 0.5% per month.
Many gals get pregnant while used accutane.Pregnancy is usually connected with mental health.so first come out from that dilemma.eat good diet add excercise daily. And take clomid and prime rose it will give you positive sign
The answer will never be known. Can it cause infertility in some patients, can it cure infertility in some patients?
How will anyone answer that question?
All we can go on is statistics unless the mechanism is known and there is a test for whether one is susceptible.
It seems statistically unlikely that 5 of you received Accutane for 3 pimples and all suffered the worst possible side effects. And that you all found a dermatologist willing to prescribe Accutane so far off label that no insurance company would cover it.
And severe acne does kill, suicide for example. Severe acne scarring can be psychologically devastating.
You are probably so far past the optimum age to get pregnant that age alone explains your problem. You can blame the isotretinoin, but your odds of getting pregnant are 0.5% per month.
Wow! Either you are the one in fifty million who had this severe reaction to Accutane, OR you have some sort of panendocrine inflammatory/autoimmune disease that had nothing to do with the Accuatne but also caused the acne as a first manifestation.
Or your entire story is made up from whole cloth.
Perhaps an endocrinologist could help you, instead of blaming a drug you took decades ago.
Hi Sara,
It all starts with stress factor.
1. Reduce your stress. Its number one reason for all diseases. Relax, meditate, yoga, workout will help.
2. Pls check the warning labels on the tablet cover or box. You cannot take thyroid medication unless you have addressed adrenal exhaustion or insufficiency. Have a good amount of protein to get over adrenal exhaustion. For thyroid, if you are hypo then don't take any form of soy, millets, gluten n sugar in your diet. Use lot of virgin coconut oil in your food. Cook at home. Remove all processed foods. Go completely organic. At night for thyroid. Take 1 tablespoon of coconut oil with warm milk or if you don't like milk. 1tbsp coconut oil, 1tsp honey n 1pinch Himalayan pink salt.
Food is medicine, medicine is food.
Pls change your diet.
Why is there no need for truth?
