Lorazepam is the generic for Ativan, Alprazolam is the generic for Xanax. They are both benzodiazepines that are commonly used to treat anxiety and nervous disorders, but they are different medications.

The FDA warns that they carry the risk of being habit forming and could cause side effects, such as nausea, dizziness, headache and irritability.
