30 Days Of Pills, 31 Day Waiting Period To Refill. It Doesn't Add Up.

I am arguing with the Dr, Ins Co, and Pharmacy... Apparently none of them have enough brains together to understand simple math nor a calendar.

The situation... My dad is on nine different medications. Seven of them he takes once a day. The other two he takes twice a day. The doctor will only write prescriptions for 30 per month for the once daily and 60 per month for the twice daily. My dad suffers from blood pressure & heart trouble, diabetes, depression and a history of TIA's & a stroke. He was in a long term care/rehab facility for about a year and they always made sure he had his meds.

He was discharged from the facility on Dec 31, 2013 and they gave us medicine to get him through the next two days (Jan 1 & 2, 2014). I had his prescriptions filled on Jan 2. He started taking those medicines starting Jan 3 and they lasted through Feb 1 (30 days). The pharmacy would not allow me to refill on Feb 1 (the 30th day). I had to wait until Feb 2 (the 31st day) and go get them as soon as they opened at noon on that Sunday. So he had to wait 5 hours after his normal dosage time of 7:30am to take his morning meds and he felt like crap all day.

So his 2nd 30 day supply started on Feb 2 (the day we purchased them) and this supply lasted through March 3, 2014 (30 days). I went that night (march 3rd) to pick up his prescriptions... they would not allow me to pick it up until the next morning (31 days). So I end up having to take an hour off work on March 4 because I have to go to the pharmacy and then take him the meds. The pharmacy didn't open until 9am and he took them about 9:30am (2 hours after his normal morning doses). He felt a little crummy that day but not as bad as the Sunday Feb 2 when we had to wait until noon. This 3rd 30 day supply lasted from March 4 through April 2.

We went through the whole ordeal again with the pharmacy on the night of April 2 with them saying we had to wait until April 3 (31st day) to pickup. So the morning of April 3, I again have tot take time off work, run to the pharmacy and then to my dads. so he gets his morning dosage (a few hours late). He again feels crummy for half the day.

This pattern goes on and on... I have spent countless hours talking to the pharmacy, doctor and insurance company about this headache and they could care less. Why can the not let you refill 1 or 2 days before you are completely out? We took him on a little trip with us and of course it fell on a refill week. They wouldn't work with us. We had to transfer his prescriptions to a pharmacy out of town so we could pick them up while on a road trip. Then the next month we had to transfer them back but we are told we couldn't transfer from state to state (they had no problem the first time). They also said we cannot transfer them on back to back months either. This took 2 days to straighten out and my dad without his meds for a day and a half. and he felt like crap for a couple days afterwards. Mix in the Sundays, holidays, and time off work... It becomes a night mare!

I even decided to pay for a month supply out of pocket so we could have enough to get by with on these days where I could not take off work or if there was a holiday. Then I was going to continue to get the ones paid partially by insurance... wrong!! They still made me wait 30 days and then said they would not reimburse me for their mistake even though I had previously called and their own employee originally said "it would not be a problem... we do it all of the time".

Why are these "professionals" not allowed to use common sense?

What medications is he taking?

Unless they are controlled substances, such as narcotics, there shouldn't be an issue. Life-sustaining medications, such as those for heart and blood pressure are not restricted and can be picked up a few days early to avoid someone's running out, in case they lost a tablet or what have you.

The only way there should be more restrictions is if he was known to have abused his medications or something.
