2mg Abilify As A Supplement To 20mg Of Celexa
(Newest replies first)

Updated

I was asked by my doc to start taking 2mg of Abilify because after taking 20mg of Celexa a month I'm not feeling much relief. I'm very leery because I've been working on straightening out a thyroid issue that has caused me to gain ten pounds in the last two months, and I understand that Abilify is a weight gainer. Do the benefits of being on Abilify outweigh the side effects of being on it? Please give me your thoughts and experiences. Remember it's only a 2mg supplement to the 20mg of Celexa I've been on.

Be careful I gained a lot of weight on Abilify and eventually my anxiety was actually much worse. I took 1.25 every other day because of sensitivity. Had to get it compounded. Now in withdrawal stage and it is HORRIBLE. WISH I HAD NEVER STARTED it.

Hello.... In 3 Studies 2 in the USA and 1 in Mexico Found that in the USA trials Abilify was no better than placebo. In the Mexico study it came out slightly better than placebo (Healy, David MD Time to get rid of Evidence based medicine) Mirapex is a dopamine agonist, Abilify is a partial dopamine agonist. For the most part they effect the same Dopamine receptor sub-types of the D2 family..D3 and D4. mirapex has been found to be superior to placebo in the treatment of Depression. Abilify is used because it is still under patent and your Dr. may get a kick back from prescribing it. Mirapex isn't under patent and there is no money to be made off it. With Abilify you perhaps will gain much weight along with increased Blood Sugar, Tardive Dyskinesia (late abnormal movements) anxiety, insomnia etc. With Mirapex you are more likely to lose weight, no impact on Blood sugar, no TD. Insomnia and fatigue are 2 of the most prominent side effects. Mirapex has another advantage (one that I like) an increase in libido. There are warnings about hypersexuality and increased urge to gamble with Mirapex. Do some research on Mirapex on Mirapex and Abilify. Your Dr. knows whats best for you though. I'm just relaying my experience with Mirapex. You should ask your self though. Years ago SSRI's were the holy grail with no add on medication needed or even heard of, never mind Abilify. Why is my Dr. wanting me to take this add on medication if Citalopram was once able to help depression w/out an Add on medication??? I also take Adderall XR 10 mg QD. That I'm sure also has an influence in treating my depression along with ADHD. Hope I gave you some info to help you.

If someone needs to take an add on med to their already existing antidepressant then the claims of the antidepressant aren't valid. For 30 Years or more we have been using TCA's and SSRI's alone and never until this Abilify poison came out has this "Add On" Fake and dangerous medication been given. There are many other drugs that can be given either alone or with the invalid SSRI. Makers of Celexa siill claim that people who suffer from depression have abnormal or low levels of NT's or Serotonin. What a farce. There is NO LOWERING of serotonin or any other NT in any depressed pt's Brain or CNS. (David Healy, The Myth and marketing of low serotonin). Paper is available in the BMJ or at RISK) A small dose, say 5 mg's of Adderall Xr would fare better any day then Abilify nonsense. No weight gain, No EPS. No blood sugar issues. We know amphetamine clearly in controlled studies is a better ant-depressant then SSRI's. Amphetamine beats them every time by a large margin. Abilify in 2 studies in the USA was no better than placebo. It;s better at getting Dr's trips to far away lands and Perks. That's about it. Mirapex does a better job than Abilify, but since it is off patent there are no more vacations to sell.

Hello, Rocky! How are you?

It is approved as an adjunct to antidepressants in doses from 2mg to 5mg daily.

It may cause some weight gain, as listed by the FDA, along with nausea, dizziness, headache, dry mouth and sedation. However, most side effects are transient and will go away in about 4 to 6 weeks, once your body gets used to the medication.

Can anyone that's taken it chime in?
