2016 Cdc Guidelines For Prescribing Opioids For Chronic Pain (Page 5)

Updated

Hey all fellow patients out there, did you know the CDC has published a list of their proposed 2016 guidelines for doctors who prescribe opioids for chronic pain? That includes oxycodone, lortab, percocet, hydrocodone, opana, suboxone, morphine, and any other drug that has an opiate ingredient in it that so many of us count on to lead normal lives!

This affects all of us and the comment period ends on January 13 2016! That's about a week from now! You know the doctors are going to have to follow whatever federal rules pass so if you are worried that you might not get the care you need please go to the gov web site for the office of the Federal Register and submit your comments to them before it's too late!

"The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) announces the opening of a docket to obtain public comment on the draft CDC Guideline for Prescribing Opioids for Chronic Pain (Guideline). The Guideline provides recommendations regarding initiation or continuation of opioids for chronic pain; opioid selection, dosage, duration, follow-up, and discontinuation; and assessment of risk and addressing harms of opioid use. The Guideline is intended to be used by primary care providers (e.g., family physicians or internists) who are treating patients with chronic pain (i.e., pain lasting longer than 3 months or past the time of normal tissue healing) in outpatient settings."

https://federalregister.gov/a/2015-31375

Editor's note: Please note that the above statement "You know the doctors are going to have to follow whatever federal rules pass" is technically correct but may be misleading in this case because the CDC draft says that it is "not a federal regulation" and that "adherence to the Guideline will be voluntary."

Editor's note # 2: The title for this discussion thread has been updated to reflect the topic most effectively.

Lily, so the only Guidelines as of this date are the FDA 120 mg Morphine/120 mg Morphine Equivalent Daily. You will need a copy of your medical records from your dr for any new dr. A new dr may or may not prescribe you the same meds and the same dose as your old dr did. If your dose exceeds the 120 mg Morphine Equivalent Daily, it is doubtful you will find a dr that will prescribe that high dosage.

Robert Raper, I apologize for the name error. I copy and paste and I have nerve damage in my hands and also RA, the mistake was made due to those impairments. I will try and pay more attention.

Only God knows who our next President will be. But, I promise you that it makes no difference if it is Democrat or Republican, not only will the laws and regs not be reversed, they will be strengthened. The President, whomever it is, isn't responsible for as many things as people think they are. If you will research it, you will find that the Senators and Representatives have done far more to tighten laws and guidelines on their own than the President even has time to think about. Since Medicaid is talked about in this thread, google, Senator Charles Grassley Medicaid Prescription Abuse. Senator Grassley started sending letters to state Medicaid programs in 2010 wanting to know what Disciplinary Actions the states took against Medicaid Providers that were high prescribers of opiates and certain other meds and that was not his only letter. You can also google the above phrase and removed Medicaid and put in Medicare.

To BL, I thank you for a very kind heartfelt apology. I do not know what cut and paste are I'm not that Bright. I am sorry I reacted to the name thing. I hated my last name for a long time when I was younger but I embrace it now so I'm sorry to be so mean to you. I hope you will Forgive me. I know the President is not Doing it All. I know his Mother passed from Cancer. my Mother did to at my Home. Mama did not want to die in a nursing home. she didn't but she had a Lot of Pain. President Obama would Care for All of us. I woke hurting really bad this morning. it's a little past 4 in the morning. it just makes me very Mad that Folks like All of us on this Thread Have to wonder who will help us. I have Enough Pain medication if I'm real stingy to last About a year. I Pray BL that You or P450 or Any Legitimite person LIVING in Pain should know our DR has the Best Treatment For All in Pain that I'm afraid is Opioids. nothing else makes life bearable for so Many of us. I don't think a person should have to be Rude to Get a DR to write a pain prescription. it should be seen as a needed thing. we All want to live with as much Dignity as we can. I saw the writing on the wall about 18 months ago and I for the First Time started to take my meds a lot less so I'd have some put back And I Hoped it was just Paranonoia on My Part As we All Know it Won't. I do not see where the Crime is in Cronic Pain Patients Having the Medication We Require. I'm Not a Addict Or Are Others in Pain. But Unfortunately for us people have to get to Know And Care to be able to tell sometimes. I'm a Robust male. I used to be a very Good Machinist and Mechanic. I Love Old Harley's when I worked. I have a Old Friend who could tell when I Hurt worse than usual by my voice so I know it's very Obvious to anyone to See a DR should not be fooled. they have our Records MRIs and can observe us. I have No Dr Now. mine let me go in September because of the DEA and I Do Disagree with the way she handled it But I Do Understand Her concerns About Her Medical Licence. I know a Dr works. I think this is a slippery slope, the DEA has no place in a patients treatment. All the Drs I Have seen Do Not Hand Out Medication to All. its just not that easy. I'm going to be self sufficient for the opiates I need to walk. you can grow poppies. I Do Not Judge. I Think We have to Do the best we can for our selves and Burpe Seeds. they call them Bread Seed Poppies. they are in Fact Paver Soriuiom. I know my spelling stinks I have a 8th grade education. I joined the army when I was 16. we all got a GED so if we came back from Vietnam in a body bag they could say they got an education. I have a little community collage; a couple years. So I'm not a genius But I Do Have A Lot Of Practical Sense. I Know When I'm Geting The Short End Of The Stick. I Feel we All Are Getting This and it makes me Angry. I have Lost A Lot in this Life as I'm sure we all can say that. I'm Not Going To Be Put Away So Easily. I Hope we all Get Mad that way we will discuss things like here I Do Not Care About A Person's Political Leanings. I Do Care That We All Vote And If Some Have A Yes We Can Sticker That's Good Too. I'm Proud That America Isn't The Racist Country It Was. I Do Wish The President Was A Very Competent Person But I Could Not Do That Job So Enough of That. Just Vote with Your Conscience. That's A Good American. We Do Not Have To Agree On All Things But I Will Still Defend Anyone's Right To There Opinion. You Can Kill a Person But Not an Idea. I Thank You All. I'm With You. we are really all in the same Boat. BL I am sorry to have Been Rude. I'm Trying To Not Be Touchy About My Name. I Apologize To You And Anyone Who I May Have Offended And So Everyone Knows, The Fine People Who Started This Thread Did Not Tell Me To Do Any Apologizing. I Know When I Have Been Wrong. I Am Truly Sorry.

Robert R. , Thank You For Your Service !

You weren't rude. It was my mistake and I'm glad you mentioned it so I could explain. If I could, I would go back and correct it but MedsChat doesn't have an edit feature. Copy & Paste is where you take your mouse and highlight words that you want to put some places else. Then you take your mouse and put it where you want to paste the words and click your mouse again.

Robert, If I read your Post #38 in this thread, you were taking Opana. Is Opana the medication that the insurance company wouldn't pay for ? I am assuming it is because it is a Brand Name and there won't be any generics for a long time due to the patent that the pharmaceutical company has on Opana. The insurance company refued to pay for the Opana because it is brand and it is so expensive. Your dr may have been able to do a Prior Authorization on it and your insurance company would have paid for it. I am also assuming that your dr is lazy and didn't want to do the paperwork that was needed for you to get the Opana. Fioricet with Codeine is a very old drug, it is cheap and it is a Schedule III. So it makes no sense that your insurance company wouldn't pay for it. Have you thought about looking for another dr and trying to see if they will do the Prior Authorization ? You may want to get a copy of your medical records from this dr and read them. United Healthcare is bad about denying medications and other things as well.

How close are you to 65 ? The reason I'm asking is because Medicare is Good insurance. Although you do have to do your research when you get a Medicare Prescription Part D Plan and be sure that you get a good plan. I have put a link below that may help you when you get ready to chose your Medicare Prescription Part D Plan and make other decisions about your Medicare.

Don't put yourself down because you don't have the type of education that you would like to have had. Not everyone can do the type of work that you did. If someone doesn't have the God Given Ability to do that type of work, all the education in the world won't help them do it.

Cynthia, have you seen a Pain Management Dr ? I'm confused about you being on Medicaid in Florida. Are you still on Medicaid ? Do you still live in Florida ? Just because a dr orders diagnostic tests doesn't mean that you have to agree to them. Regular Medicaid pays so little that usually the only hospitals that will take it are teaching/public hospitals in the state your Medicaid is from.

Tenncare decided it would rather waste money and only pay for name brand Morphine (Kadian) still not able to receive pharmacies tell me that manufacturer is on backorder and governor Haslam knew this before he passed the bill to change it. 1 the name brand cost is 400 if not more a month and tenncare doesn't reimburse so some pharmacies won't carry it and ones that will eat cost can't get it. So they took away all long access to long actors and Dr won't increase strength of fast actor which I said rather just take then deal with bs stress. The Jerks also trying to force embeda as alternative however after researching thus med was recalled at least 4 times the last year before taken off market and now rushed back in... also pharmacies are not carrying either they can shove it will not be experiment for the pretend war on drugs.. sadly a few years ago there were calls to dismantle DEA guess we are the excuse they are using to make themselves relevant to i****s again =/ they along with state boards of health and state government worked to change policy and so little they could keep rotating blame to confuse people.. it's all their faults they are all equally culpable. Obamacare the hell that it is gave them opening for corruption. Easy for them the under educated public following like sheep. Even reading the advocate groups trying to help they fold and don't see past they ok'ed adding to list but did not see that that meant they added with ok.. but took away everything else. They successfully just took away all long acting meds and left me with 3 10mg percocet. They say fentynal patches however reading that not an option especially when tenncare doesn't ok many strengths. So too low or too high. I'm allergic to latex. No thank you.

Lily I don't think you'll be able to to find a pain management doctor these days that would even consider writing for that much IR oxycodone aka Roxicodone 15mg & 30mg unless you're terminal, plus morphine on top of it.
Roxicodone is the big abuse drug since Oxycontin was reformulated and doctors are fully aware of it. It doesn't mean you're personally abusing it, but doctors are extremely paranoid about prescribing a big number of pills like you were getting. It's not the amount in mgs you're getting, it's the total number of pills.
Most doctors if they're going to give you that amount in mgs would have most of it in ER/CR pills not IR pills.
I wish you luck in finding a pain management doctor that will work with you on your current chronic pain situation.

#65 there is no way I'd be able to afford 2k a month. I am on fentanyl myself and its $187 per month without insurance here in Oklahoma

Lily, you need to get a copy of your medical records from your previous dr. Be sure and check with your new pain dr and see if they have gotten them already. You won't find a dr that will prescribe you those meds and at those doses. You will have to go to extended release pain meds.

Lily, just because your previous dr gave you certain meds in certain doses does Not mean that any other dr will prescribe you the same thing, even with a copy of your medical records.

Lily that's an excessive amount. Is it safe to say you was going to a pill mill. There's nothing that can justify needing that many narcotics.
