15mg Ms Contin 2x Daily & 10/325 Norco 8x Daily
UpdatedHi all...I have several bone fragments in my upper vertebrae from an auto accident 22 years ago (passenger) and more recently (2008) hit as a pedestrian and suffering from 8/9 mm disc bulges L5/S1 and 4th concussion 3 months ago. My lower back is obviously the worst area and I'm in the 8-9 "pain range" (severe/unbearable) on a daily basis. My GP had me on 12 10/325 Norco (APAP nightmare) for all of my chronic pain. We've tried numerous thing over the years but to no avail. The Norco was the only treatment within his realm of expertise (or what he was willing to keep me on w/out changing meds and upping my dose) that I believe he felt comfortable with. Forgot to mention that I had both epidural and facet IV's, PT and chiro, all with very short-acting results. Now, my new PMDOC just put me on MS CONTIN 15mg 2x/day and 8. 10/325 Norco. I'm still in a ridiculous amoun of pain and the Morphine Sulfate is absolutely no doing anything but glazing my eyes at work and making me more sleepy. Any thoughts on Dilaudid? How does it fair in relation to Oxy, MS, ect...?

Hello, Bothgop! How are you?
I think the issue here is that the dose of the Morphine is too low, in strength, it is equivalent to the Hydrocodone in the Norco you were taking, so for each 10mgs of it, you'd need 10mgs of the Morphine to be equivalent.
Of course the problem there is the sleepy/spaced out side effect, that will likely just get worse, if you raise the dose of the Morphine.
Have you tried Oxycodone? There is a time released formulation of it that may help you more, because it is one and a half times stronger than Morphine.
Learn more Oxycontin details here.
This is a narcotic analgesic, so it has the potential to be habit forming and may cause side effects, such as nausea, dizziness, drowsiness, dry mouth and constipation.
Hi Verwon,
Thanks for you response. I am in a great deal of pain...even more now unfortunately. I have a great tolerance to both meds and pain, as I've lived with both for quite sometime, but I agree that my dose needs some altering. "Why morphine and not something else," I asked my Pain Doc. If our goal is to ultimately become pain-free, and in the short term and unforeseen future, keep my 'round-the-clock pain to a minimum, will Morphine be strong enough? What about Zohydro? I've been taking so much APAP but have success with hydro, why not employ pure hydro? It's new and he didn't seem to know much about it, but I asked referencing my conversation with my GP to see if it was at least an option. I'm sure it's about cost as well, as I told my Doc my not so awesome financial situation. But Morphine? And only 15mg Er? I dropped 40 mg of Norco in return for what I am noticing is absolutely not strong enough. I'm keeping a pain log for the next 3 weeks until my appt so I can discuss my progress.
Thanks again...
I have been where you are and I feel for you. I had a work injury and within 5 years they had me up to 120mg a day with little relief. I spent some time researching and talking to other chronic pain patients and they recommended suboxone or a fentanyl patch. I was so fed up with the system that I threw away everything and went through the worst WD of my life. Now a year later I take Tramadol on a daily basis and muscle relaxer every now and then.i found all the Hydrocodone was doing for me was relieving WD symptoms which is what I wS now interpretating as pain. It was very difficult but the right choice for me in the long run
