Desperate ## Hi Andrea, According to The University of Missouri–Kansas City School of Medicine (UMKC), people who are allergic to penicillin may also have a cross-reaction to amoxicillin because they are both in the same family of antibiotics (known as 'beta-lactam' antibiotics). So in general, I would say it's not recommended. Perhaps it'd be best to ask your doctor about trying some other type of antibiotic altogether, such as: Tetracyclines Macrolides Fluor...

Fifty years ago I was only slightly allergic to penicillin with rash on my butt. Currently, I've been sick with a bug going around for a week and a half now. Almost better except my gland hurts when I swallow and swollen and still slight congestion in my chest. I have 500 mg of Amoxil in my home. Is this okay to take this? It is the weekend and can't get to doctors and I do not want to pay the outrageous fee in urgent care. I also have another question. I have bottles of antibiotics that look the same as when I get a prescription that were for my Labrador dog. Are these the same as human drugs? My research says they are. ## Hi Sharon, Sorry to hear about the bug going around. I hope you're feeling more relief from symptoms at this point in time. To answer your first question...

I suffer from cystic acne and I use topical clindamycin but I found some penicillin cream in a Hispanic store and I was wondering if I could use it like I do the topical clindamycin? ## If you are allergic to Penicillin, it would be best not to use it in any form. There is a possibility of experiencing allergic reactions, even if you just use it topically. Cystic acne is usually treated with oral antibiotics, which the FDA lists as possibly causing side effects, such as nausea, dizziness, headache, non-allergic skin rash, and diarrhea. Is there anything else I can help with? ## Thank you! I thought I would be but u wanted to make sure before I would try it... I've used the pills but this time the doc gave me the cream... I'll talk to him to see if he might want to prescribe it...

Im allergic to penicillen and was given cephalexin, can I take them or will it kill me like penicillin will?? ## Hi Franny, Based on my research, Penicillin and Cephalexin are classified as two different types of antibiotics (cephalosporin antibiotics and penicillin antibiotics). However, more information I'm finding states that there is some clinical and laboratory evidence of partial cross-allergenicity of the penicillins and the cephalosporins. Apparently there have been patients who reported severe reactions to both medications. So I don't think any exceptions should be made for Cephalexin in this regard either (at least to play it safe). You can learn more about this drug on the page for Cephalexin Details Was your doctor aware of this before prescribing you the medication?...

I have been prescribed antibiotics for tooth infections before having dental work and pain went away. I'm allergic to penicillin can i take cefdinir? if I take cefdinir for this and I don't have an infection will it hurt me? ## It is a different antibiotic, but there is always a risk of discovering that you're also allergic to it. Thus, you should only take it if your doctor or dentist confirms that you do have an infection. IS IT A FORM of penicillin? Can it be used for sinus infections? ## Cephalexin is not a form of penicillin. I am allergic to penicillin, so I am given Cephalexin all the time. It can be used for a number of infections including sinus infections. Cephalexin is in a group of drugs called cephalosporin antibiotics and is used to fight bacteria in the body. It works by interfering with the bacteria's cell wall formation, causing it to rupture, and killing the bacteria. Cephalexin is used to treat infections caused by bacteria, including upper respiratory infections, ear infections, skin infections, and urinary tract infections. ## I have a penicillin alergy and was prescribed cephalexin.
