I am not on medical aid, was prescribed Altosec now would like to know if I have to have a prescription to get Altosec or is there an over the counter equivalent. ## Hi, Jill! From what I can find, Altosec is listed as containing Omeprazole, which is a proton pump inhibitor that's used to help reduce the amount of acid produced by the stomach, to treat or prevent conditions such as heartburn, GERD, ulcers and gastritis. And yes, it does require a prescription in most countries. However, there are some that have been made available over the counter in many countries, so you could likely ask a pharmacist/chemist to help you find an equivalent that would be cheaper for you. Is there any difference in the generic drug Omeprazole from manufacturer to manufacturer? Specifically ones marked OME 20 by Sandoz vs. MYLAN 6150 by Mylan? Can you take one one day and another one the next day? Ok to mix them? ## There can be some sight variances, but no, they won't be anything that will cause any problems or interactions if you took them like that. Learn more Omeprazole details here. When you'd need to be careful is when the active ingredients are different, such as if one contained Omeprazole and the other Lansoprazole, then that may cause some problems. This probably isn't a full list of possibilities as that would be dependent of a ho...
