You really need a medical professional to make sure that it's strep and then to prescribe the proper antibiotic, if it is, because if it isn't actually an infection, or the proper amount of an antibiotic isn't used you run the risk of them developing antibiotic resistance bacteria.

Her E.R. doctor prescribed her amoxicillin 400mg/5 ml and she is supposed to take 10ml by mouth two times a day. Is this too much? She is only 40 lbs. ## It should be given to her according to the doctor's instructions. At her age, it is prescribed by weight and severity of the infection being treated. I am unable to get any antibiotics and a doctor has suggested using allegra D for my strep throat as he says it will work just as well.. can someone confirm that this is the case or if the strep will just get worse and continue until I take some antibiotics to knock it out???? Thanks ## Ummm...no! Strep throat is caused by an infection and requires an actual antibiotic to resolve, there are no antibiotics in any of the Allegra formulations. The only thing Allegra-D may do for you is to relieve some of the symptoms, though I find that to be unlikely, since it is used to treat allergies.

I was wondering if it is normal to give a child that is 5 years old and weighs 56 pounds 7.5 ml 3 times a day for strep throat. He just seems really tired and just throwed up. Prescribed 150mg clindamycin 4x/day for throat infection. Have taken 4 doses. See sores on the side and back of my throat. Am very concerned. Do I stop taking it. ## To be honest, it is most likely that any sores you see have been caused by the infection, rather than the antibiotic that is intended to clear it up. You also need to make sure you are taking the correct antibiotic to help with the infection. Otherwise, you run the risk of developing antibiotic resistance. I am currently diagnosed with Strep infection and my doctor prescribed me a week course of amox tr k clv 875 125 mg tab twice a day. Its been my third day of consuming this antibiotic, but i still cant see much relief to my sore throat I still have troubles while swallowing in water or food. As my mom is trying to make me take it. ## According to an abstract from nih.gov, Sulfamethoxazole and Trimethoprim is no longer commonly recommended by doctors for treating respiratory tract infections (such as strep throat) - as streptococcus pyogenes is believed to be resistant to this drug. This is not to say it won't work or that it never gets prescribed. However it does suggest that perhaps there are better/safer options out there of which I'd encourage you to ask your doctor about after an in person evaluation.
