Did you suffer any other adverse effects? Once again, I must reiterate that if you think your health or the health/life of a loved one may be in danger due to an overdose, please do not post on a free website and wait for an answer. You should always contact poison control or go to your nearest emergency treatment facility. While there are those of us here that are always happy to help, if we can, it just isn't possible for us to administer life-saving measures over the Internet, if such would be required.
My doctor prescribed 20mg of Prednisone to be taken 3 (60mg) at a time once a day. I took my first dosage around 3:30pm and accidentally took another 3 tables (60mg) around 11:30pm the same day. Should I be worried? What should I do? Thanks. ## Hi Bob, In the event of an overdose I'd probably call my prescribing doctor immediately and leave a message at the very least... If I felt my life was in danger I would've also called poison control. If you are in the US, the number for American Association of Poison Control Centers is: 1 (800) 222-1222 and they can be reached 24/7, 365 days a year. But I guess the bottom line is, how are you feeling right now?
Accidentally, took 40 mg. of prednisone. How do I taper off the drug now? ## Hi Judy, If you overdosed on your medication and are concerned about the possible ramifications of having done so, I would encourage you to call the American Association of Poison Control at: 1 (800) 222-1222. Better safe than sorry, right? As far as a tapering plan goes, this is really something you and your doctor should work closely on developing in order to ensure that the instructions are tailored to your medical history and other pertinent/personal information. There is no one size fits all when it comes to starting or stopping any medication. I just hope you're feeling alright by now.
I was in ER this morning and was diagnosed with acute bronchitis...I was prescribed 20mg of prednisone 1x daily...my question is, the ER doc said if I started them tomorrow (Weds) that I would be in great shape by Sunday....as I'm leaving for vacation....He said 5 days, and I'll be good....he prescribed me 15 pills, which makes me think he meant 3x daily for 5 days???....however, bottle says 1x daily???....do you think this could be a mistake? ...thank you in advance! ## You should take it as directed by the doctor. The FDA lists the typical side effects as possibly including nausea, dizziness, headache, fluid retention, insomnia, and weight changes. Is there anything else I can help with? Are you on any other medications?
Yikes. I accidentally took all my first day of Methylprednisolone pills at one time. Will I be ok? ## Hello, Ann! How are you? Did you experience any adverse effects? Usually, they are only spaced out to try to help minimize the side effects, as listed by the FDA, they may include nausea, dizziness, headache, nervousness, and insomnia, so taking them all at once, may worsen those effects. The last time I was on this, my pharmacist flat out told me that it was fine to talk them, all at once, if I preferred, so I did. If I did so in the morning, then the worst of the side effects were worn off, by the time I was ready to go to bed. It's always best to double check with your doctor to be sure, though. ## This was helpful.I took all 6 at once and thought I might have overdosed.
86 year old woman been prescribed 8 x 5mg tablets a day for a week can they be evened out over the day or do they have to be taken in one go ## Hi, Lyn! If her doctor didn't specify otherwise, she should be able to split them up throughout the day. Many times people are just told to take them all at once to make sure they don't forget to take the next dose later. It's been proven through medication compliance testing that people will usually remember to take one dose, but subsequent ones are typically forgotten. It may cause side effects, such as nausea, dizziness, headache, mood swings and fluid retention. Learn more Prednisone details here. Is there anything else I can help with?
Hi - is it possible to have bad side affects from only a 7 day course of the drug prednisone? I've been battling bronchitis and was prescribed 20 MG of the drug last Monday (almost 2 weeks ago). I was prescribed 40MG the first day, then 20MG a day for the next 6 days (my last dose was last Sunday). My bronchitis is alot better, but everyday I've had these wierd sinus headaches and diziness that start about noon and get worse throughout the day. I also had really bad insomnia - didn't sleep for almost 2 days after finishing the prescription. I've been taking Tylenol PM which has thankfully allowed me to sleep, but I don't like how I'm feeling during the day. I also feel alot of fatigue and bloating (my legs especially). Is it possible to have side effects from the...
I was prescribed prednisone and an antibiotic for a sinus infection. The Methylprednisone came in the 6-day pack of 4 mg pills. However, my prescription said "1 tablet a day" so I assumed I should take 1 a day for 21 days instead of following the instructions inside the pack. Is this a normal dosage? ## No, usually it is still prescribed to be taken as instructed on the package, however, only your doctor can say definitively. The FDA lists its typical side effects as possibly including nausea, dizziness, insomnia, nervousness, fluid retention and acne. Is there anything else I can help with? ## I was prescribed metylprednisone for smell loss. After the first dose my remaining smell started to fade away. So I stopped taking them. Is this common? I will never know if I have inflam...
I have taken the 48 pac of prednisone before and it was a graduated dosage by the cards they were on - the prescription I received today was in a bottle and did not have any instructions on how to take them like the ones in the pac. Can you help? ## Are you starting to come off the med? I think you have to gradually come off it. But this current bottle must have a periodic schedule for it, only all at the same dosage. Is this new bottle prescribed by the same doctor? The safest bet would be to contact your doctor or the pharmacy who dispensed it. ## Was just prescribed this medication for a sinus infection. Mine came in a bottle that instructs you to take 2 tabs every12 hours for 3 days, then 1 tablet every 12 hours for 4 days. Was prescribed by a doctor. ## I started out taking my medi...
If I get symptom relief after one 25 mg tablet ;do I still need to step down the dosage or can I stop after 1 tablet ## Hello, Tony! How are you? You should follow your doctors instructions. Just because symptoms went away, that doesn't mean that problem has resolved, yet, so you may end up right back where you started, if you don't finish the medication. There can also be serious complications stopping a steroid suddenly. Are there any other questions or concerns?
I took double dose of prednisone 60mg in one day 9 hours apart for sinus infection. Should I be worried? ## I was given a 24 hr prednisone shot yesterday to help with my tight chest and coughing. They prescribed 60 mg for 3 days as I had been taking 40mg 2 days prior. I would like to split the dosage so I don't cough at night. I am also taking albuterol in a nebulizer every 4 hrs as the inhaler was not working as good as the treatments in the doctor's office. Can I split the dosage to 30mg twice daily so I can get relief from coughing while trying to get some sleep? I haven't slept in 2 nights due to the coughing. ## Elaine, Prednisone is a glucocorticoid (adrenocortical steroid). Unfortunately I was not able to find any definitive information on exactly how much is consider...
Opites make my BP drop 80/50. I am on Fentanyl Patch 25mcg and feel very dizzy & sleepy. Think my BP is dropping dangerously, i have had lots of fluids & hung upside down off the bed. I am very sweaty. Think i need to up my dose of Prednisone but dont know by how much. Can u pls help me. ## Hello, Cathy! How are feeling? Those could also be just side effects from the Fentanyl patch, which might be why the extra fluids didn't help. This is a narcotic analgesic, so it has the potential to be habit forming and may cause side effects, such as nausea, dizziness, drowsiness, dry mouth and constipation. Do you have a blood pressure monitor to check with, when this happens? ## Dear Verwon, thank you for your help. I think you are right that it is the Fentanyl. I will invest in a Blo...
My dermatologist prescribed me 12 tabs of prednisone at 5mg for the first 5 days, then 8 tabs at 5mg for 5days, then 4 tabs at 5mg for 5 days, then 2 tabs at 5mg for 5 days, then 1 tab at 5mg for 5 days, then 0.5mg for 5 days, then stop. Should I be worried about the high dosage in the beginning of my dosage? Please Help? ## Hello, Yvonne! How are you? For some conditions that is how it's done, a high dose for awhile, which is then slowly tapered, so yes, this is normal. It is the tapering that is important, if you're on it for more than 5 days. Is there anything else I can help with? ## Thank you :) ## I'm not a doctor, but I'll second the point regarding tapering. I was on a dose of 40mg 1 day, then 20 mg 6 days, then stop and I had some major side effects after I stop...
Is Prolix (Prednisone) 20mg an effective dosage for severe psoriasis? If so, how long will it take to see improvement in my psoriasis? ## You should take it as instructed by your doctor, but it may take a few weeks, before you see any improvement. The NIH lists the typical side effects as possibly including nausea, dizziness, headache, acne, fluid retention, weight gain, nervousness, and insomnia, How long will you be taking it?
3 tablets at a time for five days or should the 3 tablets be taken separately one at 8 one at 2 and one in the evening. For upper respiratory infection ## Hello, Junie! How are you? If your doctor didn't provide any specific instructions, then it is up to you. Taking all 3 at once in the morning could help prevent the insomnia that this medication can cause, alternatively taking them separately can help minimize the severity of all the side effects. The FDA lists them as possibly including nausea, dizziness, headache, acne and nervousness. Is there anything else I can help with?
My dosage is 4x5mg daily for 5 days then 3 for 3 days then 2 daily for 3 days then 1 tablet daily for 3 days then stop My question is ! On the daily dosage for example 4 tablets per day do they have to be taken altogether or do you space them out over the day ## Hello, Alan! How are you? They can be taken either way, depending on what works best for you. Some people prefer to split them up to try to minimize the side effects. The U.S. FDA lists them as possibly including nausea, dizziness, headache, acne, insomnia and nervousness. Is there anything else I can help with?
I was recently put on a high dosage (50mg) of Prednisone a day. I was to stay on this dosage for three days, then cut it in half for three days, and then repeat until I was, by the fifteenth day, completely off the medication. Unfortunately, when my doctor prescribed me Prednisone, she momentarily forgot about psych history. On the fifth day of me taking Prednisone, I had a psychosis episode, and came to the realisation that my chaotic moods, and the sudden extreme bouts of depression and lack of concentration, had been a side effect of the medication. After speaking with my doctor, we dropped the dosage right down to 5mg and I was on that for four days before stopping completely, which was five days ago. The problem is, my moods are still not back to normal, and neither is my ability t...
Hi. I was prescribed 20mg of prednisone and took 40mg by accident. What should I do? ## Hello, Mariana! How are you? You should check in with your prescriber, to be sure, but in most cases, you would just continue taking it as prescribed. The FDA classifies the typical side effects of this medication as possibly including nausea, dizziness, weight gain, acne and insomnia. Is there anything else I can help with? ## My Prednisone dosage was taken twice in one day instead of once. Should I skip tomorrow’s dose, which would be dose #2, then continue with the third dose? ## My boyfriend took 80mg of Prednisone yesterday instead of 40 mg and I don't know what to do.
Hi I am freaking out. I am on 30 mg per day of prednisone. I take it in the morning around 7 am but accidentally took it again at 6 pm. I tried to vomit it up immediately but do not believe it worked as no pill showed up. What should I do as I took 60 mg today and now not sure how this will effect me as well as what to do tomorrow. ## Hello, Kell! How are you doing? Did you experience any adverse reactions? It can be given in that dosage, so taking that amount isn't usually a serious problem, unless you have a bad reaction to it or are allergic to it. Did you contact your doctor about the issue?
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) mandates expiration dates on all medications to ensure safety and efficacy. However, it's worth noting that many medications remain effective even past these dates. In fact, a significant quantity of these outdated medicines are donated to countries in need, such as various regions in Africa and Bangladesh, where they can still be of great help. It's important to understand that most medications do not become toxic after expiration, with the notable exception of certain antibiotics. While some, like penicillin, may lose potency over time, adjustments in dosage can sometimes compensate for this reduced efficacy. ## According to the following Harvard Medical School family health article, many medications can actually last up to 15 years ...
