I have a really bad toothache that I think is abscessed. Will Bactrim (sulfamethoxazole and trimethoprim) help treat the infection? ## Can Bactrim be used for a Tooth Infection? While Bactrim is effective against a range of bacterial infections, it is not typically the first-line antibiotic for treating tooth infections, which are often caused by anaerobic bacteria found in the oral cavity. These infections usually respond better to antibiotics that are specifically effective against the types of bacteria found in dental abscesses, such as penicillin, amoxicillin, or clindamycin, which are more traditionally prescribed by dentists. However, in cases where a patient cannot tolerate these first-line antibiotics or if the infection is caused by a bacteria that is known to be susceptible to...

I have been prescribed antibiotics for tooth infections before having dental work and pain went away. I'm allergic to penicillin can i take cefdinir? if I take cefdinir for this and I don't have an infection will it hurt me? ## It is a different antibiotic, but there is always a risk of discovering that you're also allergic to it. People allergic to one medication tend to find out there are others they are allergic to and if you don't have an infection, taking it could cause you to develop antibiotic resistant bacteria. Thus, you should only take it if your doctor or dentist confirms that you do have an infection. The FDA lists its typical side effects as possibly including nausea, dizziness, headache, non-allergic skin rash and diarrhea. Is there anything else I can hel...

I have the following antibiotics that I can take to help me until I can get to my dental appointment, but my dental appointment isn't until February 10th. I always keep my appointments because it's hard to get in with them, they stay booked for the time frame I can get there. I have an infection in the front of my gum area, front tooth stays sore a lot. It comes and goes all the time. I can taste it too. Which one would help me best until my appointment? Macrobid, Levofloxacin, or Bactrim? ## Hi Kym, I see you posted this on January 30th...and it's now March 2nd (after your appointment date). Were you ever able to determine which antibiotic to take for the tooth infection? I've been prescribed Penicillin/Amoxicillin for this in the recent past and that seemed to keep me ...

I went to MedDirect early Monday morning crying I was in so much pain. I've had an abscessed tooth for a little over 6 months now, but financially we are barely making it paycheck to paycheck, so I haven't been able to get it pulled. They said it would be a couple hundred for just the x-ray, and $375 just to get that one tooth out. So, I couldn't get it done. I was crying Saturday and Sunday because of how bad it was, plus I also have scoliosis that I haven't been able to be seen for and I could barely move for three days prior to visit. I tell him my issues, he looks inside my mouth, prescribes me ibuprofen and was going to do penicillin, but Penicillin always makes me puke, Amoxicillin is fine though...which I told him, but he prescribes me Cefdinir 300mg, which was $9...

I have an abscessed tooth and got an antibiotic from a feed store called Fish Pen (penicillin) 250MG. The vet said it would be fine to take it. It's an oval pill with the number 520 on it. How often, how many and how long should I take it for? ## Hello, Cynthia! How are you? I'm sorry about the toothache. No, since it hasn't been specifically manufactured for human use, it may not be safe for you to take. The dosage can also vary, depending on the severity of the infection and your response to antibiotics, it can range from 500mgs twice daily up to 500mgs 4 times a day, sometimes even more. Side effects may include nausea, dizziness, non-allergic skin rash and diarrhea. Additionally, whatever caused the abscess will need to be taken care by your dentist, because while an ant...

My dentist prescribed 500 mg penicillin vk before a tooth procedure. I am also on 7.5 - 325 percocets twice daily for chronic cervical pain. Can I safely take these together? Any known serious adverse interactions? Thank you ## Hello, Glenn! How are you? No, I didn't find any problems or interactions listed, but it's always best to double check such information to be sure. However, I can tell you that these are often prescribed together to alleviate the pain an infection may cause, while eradicating the bacteria. The FDA lists the typical side effects of this antibiotic as possibly including nausea, dizziness, headache, non-allergic skin rash and diarrhea. I have a tooth infection and 2 bottles of ampicilina 500mg (I am not allergic to penicillin). Will this help my tooth infection? Can a person become immune to this drug? I have taken it before and it did not seem to help much. ## Did it get rid of your infection before? Ampicillin is an antibiotic and helping to eradicate bacterial infections is all it does, it will not help with pain, or any other symptoms. Learn more Ampicillin details here. And it's not actually that you get immune to it, per se, but that the bacteria can grow resistant to it, if you don't finish a full course of treatment, or if you use it too often. Sorry not sure if spelled correctly, I was on that for my tooth but my body always gets them when I take them. ## This medication is manufactured by Sun Pharmaceutical Industries, and they list it as containing 100mgs of Doxycycline, which is an antibiotic that is used to treat bacterial infections (NDC 53489-119). Thus, it will not help with a yeast infection, as reported by the FDA, it could also cause one, or worsen an existing one, just like the Penicillin. However, I think the only permanent solution would be getting the infected teeth out so the bacteria doesn't come back. Also, my opinion is that you'd probably need to take a full course of the antibiotic (7-10 days) to determine how well it's working. I chipped one of my back molars and a few days later I woke up with a swollen face and tooth pain, so I immediately went to an urgent care clinic and was examined by a doctor. The doctor prescribed me hydrocodone for the tooth pain and Septra DS for the infection in the tooth, and the next day I got into to see my dentist for X-ray and exam. Afterward, I explained to my dentist everything I mentioned above about seeing an Urgent Care clinic and what I was prescribed. My dentist confirmed with me that the antibiotic Septra was fine to take for my tooth infection. However, I am now doing research on the internet about what doctors/dentists typically prescribe for a tooth abscess and all the results is showing amoxicillin and other types of penicillin as a first choice antibiotic, so now I...
