I have the option to use either oxycodone or hydrocodone for a broken ankle... and after surgery. Which is the stronger of the two? What is the difference between hydrocodone, and oxycodone? For example is five milligrams of each equal to each other? Meaning I cannot get an answer to this after much research over the years here and there. It’s always the same questions, what’s better, what’s more powerful (which is Oxy of course) or what is the difference between the two. My question is this. Does Hydro hit DIFFERENT receptors then Oxy and vice versa? If Oxy is more powerful, then “assuming” it fills receptors that Hydro does not?? So would taking an Percocet AND a Norco at once not be perfect, to say hitting ALL the receptors? I had surgery on my foot/ankle about 5 days ago. My dr prescribed percocets 5-325 for the first few days and now oxycodone hcl 5. I have only been prescribed percocets after my 3 c-sections so I don't really know a lot about pain killers. I asked my dr what the difference was and she rambled a lot of big words which I didn't understand. I have tried researching but all of the info is so technical. I pretty much want to know.. in layman's terms, or from someone who is or had taken at some point what the actual difference is besides the percocets also have tylenol in them. I ran 1 1/2 day short on my oxy IR and have left over hydro from dental surgery. Is how much hydro can i take until its time for my refill ## I alternate oxycodone and loracet to manage my pain and it seems to keep my tolerance down for each drug. And as far as the dose of loracet take as prescribed because to much Tylenol is very bad on your liver. I would look at it like this use your loracet as a get me by until u can fill ur oxycodone. No more 4000mgs of Tylenol in 24 hrs. ## @Dalejrfan, Although only a doctor can legally advise you on what/how much of something you should take, the general adult dosing guidelines for Norco usually recommend 1 tablet every 4-6 hours as needed for pain. I suffer from cervical stenosis and severe back pain that may require surgery. I am also suffering from a mental illness/deep depression/anxiety. I take several meds for the latter. I had been prescribed hydrocodone 5/325 every six hours, and that worked great for my pain, and I didn't sleepy. Now since changing Pain Mgmt Specialist, he prescribes OxyContin 10mg 2x a day, and this makes me so sleepy, especially with all of my other medications. This new doctor said hydrocodone was not good to take with my mental illness, but he gives me OxyContin? I don't get it, clearly the OxyContin is worse for me if I'm sleepy all the time, at least I could function and stay awake on hydrocodone. I was on oxycontin 20MG 5 times pr day... I grew a tolerance and rather than up the dose, I managed to get back onto teva-morphine SR 30 MG, but what I took before was hydro-morphine 30 MG..trying to find out the differences ## You're actually mixing up drug and manufacturer names here, which may be creating some of your confusion. The one you called Teva-Morphine is actually just the narcotic Morphine and Teva is the manufacturer. Hello, I have an appointment coming up with PM Dr in a week. I am currently taking the morphine ER, 30mg twice daily, along with 4 10mg oxycodone per day as needed. .my questions are..is hydromorphone ER better vs the morphine ER in terms of pain control and how long it lasts in the body? Going to Pain Management was on opana ER 5mg Didnt like them barely worked...they want to switch me to hydrocodone compound 10/200. How r they? Never had them...i like the regular hydro 10/325 they work better for me than the opana do:) And oxycodone work good too but this Pain Management wont perscribe anything that is short acting. Opana costs too much for the same thing that Oxymorphone does. Opana is about $500+/-, while Oxymorphone is $47. ## opana and oxymorphone are the same thing, and you can get high off it. They are avaliable in 10's ir and 20's & 50's in er. ## Opana works for me. I just picked up 130 pills for $1,000 and some change. I have a right below the knee amputation due to a land mine that happened in 1968, have never needed pain meds up until 2 to 3 years ago at which time my doc prescribed hydroc/apap 10-650 mg--formerly lortab.Now it has been changed to the same thing only in a 10-325 mg which from what I have been told was due to a change in the law Jan 2014-the 10-650 did a fair job if I oook one every 4 hrs of course the 10-325 do not seem to help very much, have about a 8 out of ten on the pain chart. My wife was given Oxycod/ap 5-325 when she had Cancer surgery, I have taken some of the leftovers and can go 8 to 10 hrs without much pain at all. I take three hydrocodone 10/325 at once. Would taking one 30 oxycontin be the the same? ## Taking one 30mg Oxycontin would not be the same as taking three 10/325mg Vicodin tablets. I say this for a number of good reasons: 1. Acetaminophen + Hydrocodone are completely different drugs than Oxycontin (different chemical structures mean different effects as well as side effects) 2. Oxycontin is an extended release version of Oxycodone; meaning that it's effects will last a lot longer than Acetaminophen + Hydrocodone in and of themselves. 3. The inactive ingredients are also going to be different in each medication; which means you may have a completely different reaction to one v.s. the other. 4. My pharmacy just refilled my oxycodone 30mg Rx with kvk tech instead of Caraco mfg. They look the same and have the same 224 imprint. Does anyone know if this is the same company and same medicine or if it is indeed mfgd by two different ones. If so, what are your thoughts? Hello~I'm on oxy 80's and dilaudid 4mgs which are prescribed for back pain. The oxys alone don't help at all. I get dilaudids tomorrow, but will be out of oxys. My doctor has just switched me from oxycodone HLC five MG tablets to Norco which also contains acetaminophen. I have been taking Tylenol with the oxycodone and I understand I should stop that medicine prior to taking the Norco. Is the Norco a milder medication and the oxycodone?
