Hello, I've just bought the UK Version of 'Sominex', a night-time sleep aid - the active ingredient is the antihistamine Promethazine Hydrochloride. It says not to use it if you've recently used MAO inhibitors - I'm not on any prescribed MAO inhibitors, but I have recently used herbal remedies like Ashwagandha, Siberian Ginseng (Eleuthero), and also Resveratrol and Quercetin, all of which apparently are mild(?) MAO inhibitors. Am I safe to use Promethazine with these herbs/compounds, as they are are not prescription-strength MAO inhibitors? Or should I play safe and not mix them? Many thanks! ## Hello, Ian! How are you? I've checked for possible interactions and the only thing I found listed was between the Ashwaghanda and the Promethazine, taking both together w...
It says do not take if you are taking other meds with MAOI. What do those initials stand for? ## It's a class of medication, a Monoamine Oxidase Inhibitor, they are a type of antidepressant. ## I would be shocked, but not surprised, if you were prescribed such powerful medication without a detailed, clear explanation of its side effects. It is unfortunate that many doctors treat patients with mental illness like children, incapable of understanding their own condition and medications. If this happened to me, I would find another doctor. And never take drugs from someone else's prescription. it is not only illegal but can be deadly. Note: I am a complete layman. Do not take my advice without first consulting with a licensed mental health professional. ## What are MAOI medications...

Emsam has been a miracle drug for me. I respond very well to mao inhibitors and they served me well for many years but after 7 years a developed a type of rheumatoid arthritis so I had to stop taking them.. Emsam is working very well for me but the cost is prohibitive. Just this past month they increased the price by $300.00. If you have health insurance you are not eligible for any assistance. I pay $425.00 per month for my drub plan and health insurance. My cost is $500.00 per month and I simply can not afford it much longer.I can understand drug companies needing to charge a love of money to cover their research but I would like to see this company investigated for raising the cost by $300.00 per month ## Hello, Carla! Sorry that the cost of this medication is so prohibitive. However...

what is the name of this drug?what specific eye condition is this drug contraindicated?what may result if this medicine is taken with MAO inhibitors? ## A similar question was asked, before. However, I am unable to find any contraindications listing that it shouldn't be used with any eye condition. The only thing I can guess on that is that since it is a stimulant, it can raise blood pressure and have other stimulating effects on the body. In the case of someone with glaucoma, the pressure balance in the eye is off and this may make it worse. It cannot be taken with MAOIs or within a few weeks of using them, because it can increase the plasma concentrations of those drugs, which could lead to toxic levels of them in the body. As to the name, it is exactly what you posted, the trade ...

Filed under LinezolidThis was prescribed for our dog. He has had hip surgery as well as treating eye infections. He's a Westie and has lots of health issues. I found these in a baggie with his name on it. ## Hello Pepper, I believe what you have there is a Monoamine Oxidase Inhibitors (also known as a MAO-I) which was previously the commonly used drug for use in dogs for the treatment of canine cognitive dysfunction and pituitary-dependent Cushing’s disease. This drug is FDA approved but not regularly used anymore due to the discovery that it has adverse effects with multiple common dog foods and other various drugs given to dogs. I'm not sure if your dog has any of the above listed diseased but this is what the drug was intended to be used for. It may be that they were given in conjunction wi...
