the expiration date on the bottle is 9/2009. I have been bringing up yellow mucus, & I'm coughing a lot. Is it safe to take this medicine? ## Hi Ruth, The only potential problem I see with taking expired penicillin is not so much about the safety of the drug itself, but in terms of losing efficacy overtime, a less potent antibiotic inevitably creates a greater risk for developing antibiotic resistant bacteria. And for that reason alone I think it would probably be a good idea to invest in a fresher prescription that has retained more of its potency -(depending on what your storage conditions were like over the past 5 and half years). I hope this helps! Does anyone else have a different view from personal experience? I know some types of medications do retain potency for quite so...

Liquid penicillin - The date on it is 04-2015. My throat is almost swollen shut. Can I give my self a shot of this? My insurance is not effective until april. I also have runny nose, fever etc. ## Hello, Rhonda! How are you? I'm sorry that you're sick. But no, you should not use any expired liquid medications, they tend to go bad faster than other formulations and not only do they lose effectiveness, but they could actually make you ill if you used them. The FDA lists the typical side effects of antibiotics as possibly including nausea, dizziness, headache, non-allergic skin rash and diarrhea. It would be best to see your doctor or go to your nearest urgent care. Is there anything else I can help with?

I have a bootle of penicillin v k 500mg And the expiration 5/28/15 can i take one my throat is killing me ## Hello, Mat70015! How are you? This medication does not become toxic, once expired, but it can start to lose effectiveness, so it may not fully eradicate infectious bacteria, if you have an actual infection. It would be best to dispose of it and see your doctor, to determine whether or not you actually have an infection and, if so, to obtain a new supply. This is an antibiotic and it is important not to use them, when it isn't appropriate, because you run the risk of developing antibiotic resistant bacteria. Second, this is even more of a danger, because this bottle of medication is outdate. The expiration date was 07-23-2010, after that, they start to lose their effectiveness and this creates an even bigger risk of developing antibiotic resistant bacteria. Have you seen a doctor to see what it causing this problem? It co...

Is it safe to use this after the expiration date? I have a full bottle of 800,000 U that has a date posted of Sep 30 2005. I would like to use it for a sore throat ## Pota-Vi-Kin is listed as containing the active ingredient Phenoxymethylpenicillin, also commonly referred to as Penicillin V, it is an antibiotic that's used to treat various types of infections. And, being as it is that old, it will likely not have much efficacy left, so taking it creates the risk of developing antibiotic resistant bacteria. What antibiotic has a shelf life of 10 years? ## I don't know of any that have that long of a shelf life and I can't find one listed. It generally varies by drug, so there may be one, however. As to Amoxicillin, it has a shelf life of 2 years, from the date of production and your pharmacist has to give it to you with a minimum of one year left on the expiration date, until it starts to lose potency, except when it is a liquid preparation, which have a 7 to 10 day lifespan. I took this pill and the expiration date is 09/23/11. Is anything going to happen to me? ## Hi Crystal, According to a Harvard Medical School family health article, except in rare cases (i.e. tetracycline), there is little chance of danger due to taking medications even up to 15 years beyond their expiration date. Source: health.harvard.edu/fhg/updates/update1103a.shtml Penicillin does not go bad/get dangerous with age, per se, however, it can lose efficacy and may not work as well as it did, when it was new. This means that taking a standard dose may not effectively wipe out an infection and could actually cause the development of drug resistant bacteria. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) mandates expiration dates on all medications to ensure safety and efficacy. However, it's worth noting that many medications remain effective even past these dates. In fact, a significant quantity of these outdated medicines are donated to countries in need, such as various regions in Africa and Bangladesh, where they can still be of great help. It's important to understand that most medications do not become toxic after expiration, with the notable exception of certain antibiotics. While some, like penicillin, may lose potency over time, adjustments in dosage can sometimes compensate for this reduced efficacy. ## According to the following Harvard Medical School family health article, many medications can actually last up to 15 years ...
