Expiration Date Morphine
13 Topics FoundRecently found a bottle of liquid morphine sulfate that was from a family member that had hospice back in 2007. The expiration date on the bottle is 2010. It had been opened previously. It was found in the basement of the house. The liquid morphine is brown, and it has a distinct "expired" smell to it. Aside from common sense about the gross factor, is it possible at all to still use? Main concern is if there is a chance of dangerous mold and bacteria. I'm sure I still has some potency left. Would hate to have to throw it away. Willing to risk a little sickness, very worried about possibility of deadly mold /deadly bacteria. ## Hello, Kenny! How are you? No, you should just dispose of this. Liquids do not last nearly as long as other forms of drugs, plus they also tend to go...
So I got liquid Morphine that expired November 2014. Is it still any good? ## Hello, Mike! How are you? No, you should just dispose of it. Liquid medications degrade much faster than other forms, so not only will it no longer be effective, but it may also have gone bad and could make you ill if you take it. The FDA classifies this medication as a narcotic analgesic, so it has the potential to be habit forming and may cause side effects, such as nausea, dizziness, drowsiness, dry mouth and constipation. Is there anything else I can help with?
Is my morphine oral solution still safe to take it has been refrigerated since April 2013 ?thanks ## Hello, John! How are you? Most likely not, liquid medications tend to go bad, after the expire and could actually make you ill, if you try to take it. It would be best to dispose of it. The FDA classifies this medication as a narcotic analgesic, so it has the potential to be habit forming and may cause side effects, such as nausea, dizziness, drowsiness, dry mouth and constipation. Is it safe to take Morphine sulfate 1 mm rel 15 mg tab after it's expiration date? ## can you take propox-n/apa after expitation date ## I have some extended release morphine sulphate 60 mg from 2015. Is it ok to take?? I need to go to an event without being in such pain. I usually take 15 mg and 15 mg of oxycodone. ## Under U.S. FDA regulations, tablets and capsules expire one year from when they are dispensed to you by your pharmacy, since that exposed them to the elements that can cause degradation, such as heat, light, and moisture, so under average storage conditions in most homes, that is the longest period of time they can guarantee full efficacy. Liquids, creams, and ointments may have shorter expiration dates, and capsules/tablets that are still sealed in their factory orig...

I have several 15 mg tablets of MS Contin. They are 4+ years old. What is the shelf life of this medication? ## From what others have stated, Morphine has an expected shelf life of 2 years. However, there's actually a lot of conflicting information out there around the topic of expired medication. According to a Harvard Medical School family health article, except in rare cases (i.e. tetracycline), there is little chance of danger due to taking medications even up to 15 years beyond their expiration date. This conclusion was based upon a study conducted at the request of the US military due to stockpiles of expensive drugs they could otherwise need to replace every few years. The conclusion was that 90% of those drugs remained effective 10 - 15 years after the expiration date. But t...
i had pills from when my mother had cancer in 2006. can i use these same pills for pain now ## Hi, Linda! Sorry that you're in pain. However, the best thing to do would be to see your doctor to get an appropriate diagnosis and discuss your treatment options. These tablets have an expiration date of one year from when they were dispensed, which means they expired back in 2007. After that they begin to lose effectiveness, which means that after so many years, they are most likely worthless. Are there any other questions or concerns?
Morphine liquid...after one year after opening. Its still the same color as when it was recieved. Is it still good? My back pain has come back and this medication is what was given before. ## Hello, Jessica! How are you? I am sorry that you're in pain. What is the expiration date on the bottle? Liquid medications tend to expire faster than most other forms and may actually turn sour, so they could make you sick, if you take one when expired. The FDA classifies this medication as a narcotic analgesic, so it carries the risk of being habit forming and may cause side effects, such as nausea, dizziness, headache, constipation and dry mouth. It would also be a good idea to have your back checked out to be sure of what's causing the pain.
I am a hospice nurse and the discussion has come up as to the shelf life of the narcotics that we use such as Ativan,Morphine, Dilaudid. Is there a blanket time that we can use for all narcotics that have expired expiration dates on the label. ## Okay first, Ativan is not a narcotic, it contains the active ingredient Lorazepam, which is a Benzodiazepine, so rather than treating pain, it is used to treat anxiety, nervous disorders and some severe cases of insomnia. Learn more: And second no, dispensing expired medications to your patients would be considered illegal under U.S. law. Are there any other questions? ## Calm down, Nurse Nancy geeesh ## Um. Yes, lorazepam IS a narcotic... Narcotic does not mean "illicit drug", that does not make any sense. The way that I see it, people...

Morphine is a very potent narcotic analgesic. Common side effects may include: nausea, drowsiness, dizziness and constipation. You can read more here: Is there anything else I can help you with? ## Uh, maybe. I just took.. 8 of them and still nothing. They lose that much potentness over time? ## I take MS SR every 12 hours. Can I still benefit from taking 10 year old Morphine Sulfate 20mg/ml oral solution ## Hi Smith! After a medication expires, it lose"s it's effectiveness. Especially after 10 years. U should call your Doctor 4 a new prescription. ## @Smith, According to a Harvard Medical School family health article, except in rare cases (i.e. tetracycline), there is little chance of danger due to taking medications even up to 15 years beyond their expiration date. This conclusion was based upon a study conducted at the request of the US military due to stockpiles of expensive drugs they could otherwise need to replace every few years. White oblong pill with EC on one side and a weird shape on the other side almost like a backwards G, please identify. ## This is not morphine sulfate. It is simply a time-released antibiotic called Erythomicin (250mg). It is used for many infections, like pneumonia, bronchitis. Common side effects include diarrhea, stomach pain, and hives. ## And if this is an old pill it can be dangerous to take, as Erythro starts to metabolize, one of its components can cause serious liver damage, so this one should never be used past the expiration date or if you aren't certain how old it is. Most meds just lose efficacy past their expiration, so you could still use them, but may have to double up to get the effective dose, but there are a few that are dangerous, so if you aren't sure, toss ...
