Expiration Date Morphine

Recently found a bottle of liquid morphine sulfate that was from a family member that had hospice back in 2007. The expiration date on the bottle is 2010. It had been opened previously. It was found in the basement of the house. The liquid morphine is brown, and it has a distinct "expired" smell to it. Aside from common sense about the gross factor, is it possible at all to still use? Main concern is if there is a chance of dangerous mold and bacteria. I'm sure I still has some potency left. However, the best thing to do would be to see your doctor to get an appropriate diagnosis and discuss your treatment options. These tablets have an expiration date of one year from when they were dispensed, which means they expired back in 2007. Morphine liquid...after one year after opening. Its still the same color as when it was recieved. Is it still good? I am a hospice nurse and the discussion has come up as to the shelf life of the narcotics that we use such as Ativan,Morphine, Dilaudid. Is there a blanket time that we can use for all narcotics that have expired expiration dates on the label. ## Okay first, Ativan is not a narcotic, it contains the active ingredient Lorazepam, which is a Benzodiazepine, so rather than treating pain, it is used to treat anxiety, nervous disorders and some severe cases of insomnia. White oblong pill with EC on one side and a weird shape on the other side almost like a backwards G, please identify. ## This is not morphine sulfate. It is simply a time-released antibiotic called Erythomicin (250mg). It is used for many infections, like pneumonia, bronchitis.
