Contrave And Surgery
10 Topics FoundI was taking only 2 contrave pills in the morning for a couple of months. My last dosage was yesterday which was Monday. I'm having cosmetic surgery in two days which is Thursday. Is it safe to have surgery? I wasn't aware of any dangers with Contrave & surgery. I wasn't on this medication when I initially had my consult. Please help.. I'm worried. ## Has your surgeon provided any instructions regarding medications you should not take, before your surgery? Due to the Naltrexone in Contrave, some pain medications may not work for you, it usually takes about 3 days, after stopping the medication, for them to work, again. The FDA warns that this medication may cause other side effects, such as nausea, dizziness, headache, mood changes, and anorexia. ## Hello! To be hone...
I've been on Contrave for 6 months with some slight success. I've lost about 6 lbs, but I also have not gained any weight, which is at least a step in the right direction. I don't follow all the rules and don't exercise enough. I was initially scheduled to have ENT surgery for a severe sinus infection in 2 days (Wednesday). Surgery has now been moved to 8 days (following Tuesday). My GP told me today that I should off Contrave for 2 weeks prior to surgery because of the naltrexone, because it might interfere with anesthesia. I've looked online and cannot find any mention this. She also told be that because the naltrexone dose (8mg) is so I need to check with the anesthesiologist to be sure. I called the surgeon's office and his nurse called the anesthesiologist w...
Hi. I am scheduled for a surgery in 2 weeks, in which I'll be having general anesthesia. Does anybody know if the Contrave will interact with the meds they give you to put you out? I'm just getting started with this. I hate to quit, but safety first. Thanx for your replies. ## Hi Kathleen, If you have a moment, I would probably encourage you to give a quick call to the anesthesiologist and/or surgeon just to be safe. One other thing I wanted to mention is that according to the University of Maryland Medical Center (umm.edu / drug interaction tool) there are no interactions listed between Contrave and the anesthesia itself. However, alcohol appears to be an inert ingredient in one of the most commonly used intravenous anesthetic solutions known as Propofol. The bupropion in Contr...
I have been taking one 5-325 mg Percocet at night for some oral surgery I had last week. I am OK to stop using the Percocet as most the pain is gone and I was taking it at night as I grind my teeth which can cause additional pain but I can deal with the iburofen taking care of it now. I want to start my Contrave but took one Percocet last night. Can I take the Contrave? This will be my first try with Contrave. ## Taking the Contrave too close to the Percocet could cause an increased risk of seizures, according to FDA reports, it could also throw you into precipitated withdrawals. Thus, it is usually best not to take Contrave, until you are in withdrawal from the Percocet, or have been off of it about 3 days, or so, unless your doctor instructs otherwise. How are you doing, now? Did you ...
Does anyone know if you can quit cold turkey or do you have to wean off? ## When a patient is taken off Wellbutrin it is usually weaned. I would think Contrave would be the same. ## Hello Contrave Dislike, According to the National Institute of Health it is typically suggested that you wean off of Contrave, however, they will take into account how long and how much of the medication you have been taking. Please consult your doctor so that he can tell you if you need to be weaned off or if you can simply stop taking the medication. Here is a link to a similar discussion where people have talked about their experiences with quitting Contrave. [1] Wanting To Quit Taking Contrave I hope this information helps. ## I quit cold turkey 5 days prior to a major surgery. I only noticed my anxiety ...
I am on week 2 and the nausea is really bad. Vomiting and constipation at times have started. I am losing weight. I'm also 14 months post gastric sleeve surgery. I need help with the nausea. Any suggestions? ## Ginger chews really helped for me. Also noticed the nausea was worse if I ate fatty food. Hope that helps. ## I think Ginger is an excellent option for alleviating nausea as suggested by post #1. [1]"The Effectiveness of Ginger in the Prevention of Nausea...": ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC4818021 Peppermint essential oil tends to help me with nausea as well. [2]"Study of the Effect of Mint Oil on Nausea...": ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3560544 But I'd also consider looking into Ginseng if you need a trifecta of remedies. [3]"Effects of Korean ...
I have been taking contrive for 2 months. I haven't lost any weight on it as I cannot exercise because I need knee replacement surgery. How long before the surgery do I need to discontinue contrave? Even though I am not losing weight, I am feeling better....should I ask my doctor to put me on wellbutrin instead? ## @T, Usually surgeons will tell their patients if and when they need to stop taking a specific medication prior to an operation. My understanding is that this should be standard practice on the surgeons part, to at least ask if you if you are on any medications when you fill out forms on your initial visit. If this wasn't done, I would just encourage you to seek out their opinion asap since it's something they need to be made aware of in case of emergency (god forb...
I took contrave for four days. How long will it last in my system? I cant take the nauseous feelings. ## Hello, Meka! How are you feeling? It shouldn't take more than a few days. Did you experience any other side effects, which the FDA lists as possibly including headache, nervousness, and insomnia? ## I have all the bad side effects. I feel terrible like I'm on a bad acid trip. I wish this would get out of my system as I'm afraid to do my job ## How many days does contrave take to get out of your system? I’m having surgery and need to know the exact days.
I had surgery and was given Valium as well as codeine for the pain. Only took codeine for a day or so and last time I took Valium was yesterday -- in total for less than a week. I am wanting to begin my contrave prescription but want to make sure there are no contraindications as I know Valium has quite a long half-life and am concerned about mixing chemicals in my body. Suggestions as to how long I need to wait before I start would be appreciated . Thanks ## Hi Diana, I'm a little confused as to whether the "Vicodin" in your title is a typo or not, because you go on to mention "Valium and Codeine" from that point forward with no other regard for Vicodin...? According to The University of Maryland's drug interaction tool, there are no interactions between Valium ...
I have been taking contrave for 4 months now I had problems with constipation and now have a prolapsed bladder I may need surgery can I go back on Contrave if I stop taking it??? I have lost 56 pounds but I am afraid I will gain it back right away Loving the way I feel being much lighter wish I didn't have this problem. ## Hello Joann! How are you? Yes, if you were straining due to the constipation, that can sometimes cause a bladder prolapse. And yes, many people stop Contrave long enough to have surgery, then start taking it, again, once their doctor says they can. The FDA lists the typical side effects of Contrave as possibly including nausea, dizziness, insomnia, nervousness and anorexia. Is there anything else I can help with? ## thank you very much have a nice evening
