I am curious if anyone else has had any of these side effects from taking bactrim. My mouth is so swollen with blisters all inside my mouth.....now it has started to affect my private area as well with same symptoms. I cant eat and it burns all day long. Hi. I've been meaning to post for a couple of weeks. In early January I was diagnosed with a staph infection and prescribed Bactrim. I knew nothing about it so I took my full dose. A few days after I finished all the pills, I had every negative side effect imaginable. Very light headed, very nauseous, dizzy, headaches, muscle weakness, upset stomach, etc. I also got a UTI which I believe was caused by the Bactrim. I was fine each day until around noon, and then I only felt like laying down for the rest of the day, and I'm a busy mother. I am here to say that it DOES go away. Mine lasted for about 4 to 5 weeks! I had strep throat, therefore the docter proscribed me the bactrim ds 800 - 160 , he said take 2 a day , for 10 days and I had to finish them. Today is the 5th day , but since I've been taking them my strep throat went away, but then i get fevers everyday,bad headaches,and a my stomach doesn't feel normal,I don't want to eat. Took bactrim for l-1/2 days. Blood sugar plummetted, severe GI problems, anxiety through the roof! Immediately stopped taking. This was 3 months ago. Side effects continue although slowly improving. Am taking baby steps toward recovering from this awful, poisonous drug. Has anybody else had such a difficult recovery from this? ## It is very unusual for side effects to linger for such a long period of time, especially after taking just a few doses of the medication. My husband was prescribed this pill for a staph infection. He has dementia and has had total confusion, craziness, sleeplessness and anger since taking this pill (2 pills in am and 2 pills in PM). I had a stem cell transplant almost 4 years ago. I have been on bactrim, diflucan, tacrolimus and valtrex for 4 years. I am having pain in my upper arm, thoracic spine and cervical spine. It's muscle/tendon issues not bone. I've been taking this pill for about 4 days (2 a day) -- I believe I am getting dizzy from them but also my head feels weird like I am lightheaded. I really do not care for the feeling. In about 1 to 2 hours after taking this drug I get the chills and shakes and all my joints ache. I also get very queasy. I have been fighting this for 5 days now. Can you help me? Having taken Bactrim for about 3 weeks for a prostate infection, it now seems that the first urination after taking the pill exaggerates or possibly causes an extra burning sensation. Is this ever reported as a side effect ## Bactrim contains Sulfamethoxazole and Trimethoprim and being that it's a sulfa drug, it's well known to cause odd side effects and weight reactions in many people that take it. My son is 12 months old and was prescribed Sulfameth Trimeth 5ml twice daily. Can this keep him awake? He's been having stomach cramps which I have been treating with greek yogurt to add back the good bacteria. However, he seems wide awake when he should be exhausted and ready for sleep. I'm having constritures of my tendons in ankles is this normal. Felt like tendon was as tight as rubberband and going to break for like ten mins. I was prescribed bactrim or moderate acne and have been on the generic form sulfameth/trimethoprim 800/160 once daily for 5-6 weeks and have seen little to no results. Anyone know time line for this stuff to start working? I've been on keflax, ampicillin with success but I recall those working faster. No side effects but no success either, any advice?? ## From what I've found when researching this, results should start to be seen at about 6 weeks of use. Generally, Bactrim is the most problematic antibiotic, overall, not just for any possible effect on the liver. It tends to be much more harsh, since it is a sulfa based antibiotic, so it usually causes a lot more side effects and many more allergic reactions than others. It's also very rough on the kidneys and can easily cause dehydration. Thus, if you have a choice, you might want to try Cipro first and save the Bactrim as a last resort, if others don't work. I rarely tell anyone to take it as their first option. Typical side effects to Cipro may include nausea, dizziness, headache, non-allergic skin rash and diarrhea.
