Will a seven day dose work. I went to Mexico to buy it and the box only has 14 and the dosage is for 1 every 12 hours. ## The dosing schedule for this drug is largely dependent on the severity of the type of infection you may be dealing with. For example: The usual adult dosage in the treatment of acute exacerbations of chronic bronchitis is 1 Bactrim DS (double strength) tablet or 2 Bactrim tablets every 12 hours for 14 days. For the treatment of traveler's diarrhea, the usual adult dosage is 1 Bactrim DS (double strength) tablet or 2 Bactrim tablets every 12 hours for 5 days. The recommended dosage for patients with documented Pneumocystis carinii pneumonia is 75 to 100 mg/kg sulfamethoxazole and 15 to 20 mg/kg trimethoprim per 24 hours given in equally divided doses every 6 hours...

My dog has an ear infection and I have some bactrim ds that I couldn't take. I was wondering if he could take this medicine and what dosage would I give him? He weighs 23-25 lbs. ## Hi Kat, When it comes to potent antibiotics such as Bactrim, I feel it is vital to contact an experienced veterinarian who can assess the dog's condition in person first and then make an appropriate medical decision based off their evaluation. Just to add, Bactrim is in fact prescribed to dogs and cats alike for various types of infections. My only concern is that Bactrim tends to cause a lot of side effects in humans, so I can only hope that your dog has a positive response to it. If you have a moment, please post back on how things are going with treatment. ## How much bactrim should I give my 60lb...

I went to my pulmonary doctor today. I wasn't sure if I had allergies or an upper respiratory infection (not severe). I have asthma, and did not do as well with my breathing tests as I usually do. The Doctor heard a slight wheezing in my chest. He gave me 5 days of Bactrim DS. Is this a normal dose or should he have ordered pills for more days. ## Hello, Linda! How are you? No, it can be used like that, if he thinks an infection might just be starting, or he's trying to prevent one. Its side effects may include nausea, dizziness, non-allergic skin rash and diarrhea. Is there anything else I can help with?

My beagle keeps a yeast infection in his ears all the time. No matter how many times I take him to the vet, it goes away for a week or two and it's back again. He has seizures and also he weighs 60 pounds, now I know he's overweight but I need to know how much bactrim I can give him to clear up his ear infection. I cannot take him to the vet right now I just don't have the cash for that. So any information you could give me would be greatly appreciated. ## Bactrim is an antibiotic, it can only treat bacterial infections, it will not treat yeast infections. It can be used in dogs, according to NIH reports, and is safe for them, but it should not be given, without a veterinarians approval. It can also cause side effects in dogs, such as nausea, dizziness, skin rash, and diarrh...

How many days of Bactrim use does it take to cure strep throat? ## Did your doctor prescribe it for treating strep? The reason I'm asking is because there are certain types of strep that it shouldn't be used to treat, so you shouldn't take it for strep, unless your doctor has specifically instructed you to do so. Learn more Bactrim details here. As to the dosing, it's usually taken twice a day for 10 days to treat most infections, but that can also vary depending on the type of infection being treated and the severity. ## Tengo gramos en la piel con nucleo de color verde porulento me mandaron el bactrim y tengo una mano inflamada, enrojecimiento y dolor, estoy tomando el medicamento correcto? ## What can a person use for the mouth sores and cracked lips from reaction of th...

Can I double up on my first dose of Bactrim to jump start the attack on my infection? ## I would be very careful about doubling up on the first dose, due to the fact of possible allergic reaction to the medication, which is significant'y higher with sulfur based drugs. ## Though this is an old post, I would like to add that doubling up is not a good idea, for more reasons than just the worry of an allergic reaction. When you take a certain medication, your body can only absorb and use a certain amount of it and the rest is just expelled as waste, or if you take too much, then you get the symptoms of overdose! ## Thank you very much for this information I am another person not the original person who asked the question... But I was just recently given Bactrim for cystitis and my conc...

Will it still do what it's suppose to do without making us sick...I need help. ## Hi Katie - have you taken any tablets yet and noticed any side effects? I have just been prescribed Bactrim DS and have taken half doses to start with. Taking medication is stressful if you have fear of reactions like I do. Hope you feeling ok. Tanya ## Hello, Katie and Tanya! How are you both? No, it will not work as well if you only take half the dosage. You need to take the full tablet, just as prescribed, in order for it to properly eradicate the bacteria. It may cause side effects, such as nausea, dizziness, non-allergic skin rash and diarrhea. I am cutting the Bactrim in half. I took full dosage two days but I cannot chance a fall so I cut in half. If I have dizziness, I will not finish. I can get natural product for UTIs. I do not take anything but an occasional ibuprophen so my system is clean. I never take prescribed drugs as a rule. ## Yes, this is not a time released medication, so you can safely cut it, however you should only do so under the approval of your doctor. The FDA lists its typical side effects as possibly including nausea, dizziness, headache, non-allergic skin rash, and diarrhea, Has there been any change? How are you doing? ## Can I take a half dose of Bactrim to lower my dose because 800mg is too high for me? I have interpharm 800-160 antibiotic. Was wondering what that dosage would be for my 6 year old? My 14 year old took I tablet twice daily so was wondering if I could just cut the tablet in half? ## Hello, Denise! How are you? Has your child's doctor prescribed this for them? Antibiotics shouldn't be used, unless a doctor confirms the presence of a bacterial infection, because improper use creates the risk of developing antibiotic resistance. Additionally, when an antibiotic is prescribed you need to be sure that you or your child finishes the entire course of treatment to ensure that the bacteria is completely eradicated. Side effects to this medication may include nausea, dizziness, non-allergic skin rash and diarrhea. ## I was wondering if there is anything in it that would he...

I have a 25-28 lb. Pug. She has an ear infection, and I have no money for the vet. I do have some Bactrim that I had a reaction to, and I am wondering if I can cut it in half to give her? I know we used to use Bactrim ?TMP when I worked in an animal shelter, but that was over 20 years ago, and I don't remember the dosages. Thank you. ## Hi Sherry, Based on my research, the usual initial dose of Bactrim for dogs is listed at 13 milligrams per pound, to be taken twice daily (12 hours apart). So for a 28lb dog, that would bring each dose to 364 milligrams (13 x 28 =364), amounting to a total daily dose of 728 milligrams (364 x 2 =728). However, just to be on the safe side it would probably still be a good idea to also contact your local veterinary office with a simple inquiry regarding...

Began taking a pill last night of sulfamethoxazole/tmp for cellulitis. Wanted to take it this morning by 8 am. To stay on schedule. But just ate some grapefruit for breakfast. I didn't notice instructions not to eat grapefruit. At what time should I now take my medicine? How long should I wait? ## Grapefruit may slightly reduce the efficacy of your next dosage, but it doesn't cause aNY seriously dangerous interactionS, thus it is usually best to continue with your dosing schedule and just avoid grapefruit for the rest of the duration you that are taking it. You should always double check with your doctor, of course, but in most cases, there is no serious concern. I have just started I took one and Im thinking 3 times a day every 8 hours will this help? ## Gregory, Bactrim is not the most effective antibiotic for dental infections. Most hospitals offer a dental clinic based on ability to pay or charity care. I understand the challenges of being financially strapped but even taken as prescribed this class drug may not completely focus on the complex infections encountered in dental sensitive organisms. Pill imprint H 49 has been identified as Sulfamethoxazole and trimethoprim 800 mg / 160 mg, is this the same as the pill IP 272? I ask because I have been using the IP 272 pill for 7 years, and my pharmacy just filled it with the H 49 version. Same strength? same drug? Please advise ## Yes, they both contain the same medications in the same dosages. It is completely normal for your pharmacy to switch which manufacturers product they have on hand, depending on who was offering the cheapest price, at the time they needed to restock their supply. Are there any other questions or comments?

Hi I rescued a horse and it has a puncture wound in her breast area looks like maybe for a t post can I give her Bactrim DS 800-160 tab and if so how many should I crush in her food?? Thanks!! ## Hi CC, Sorry to hear about your horses condition. From what little bit I'm finding, some people suggest giving one 800/160 mg. Bactrim tablet per 100 lbs of horse (basing their dosage on the weight of the horse). Although I'd imagine this number could vary greatly depending on the severity of the condition. I also realize you posted this almost a week ago, but it sounds like your best bet would probably be to consult a veterinary clinic who specializes in horse treatment. You can learn more about this drug on the page for Bactrim Details I wish your horse well and hope it improves soon!

I am prescribed Bactrim DS 160/800mg (2) Double Strength tabs every 12 hrs. for a A.Baumannii infection from the OR which took me back to the OR to remove the infection now as I heal I am on Double Strength 800mg x 12 hrs. Has anyone else taken this much dosage and for how long? Kind of bummed that this bacteria was hanging out in the OR in the first place. Metallic taste in mouth constantly other than that I am tolerating it well. This SUPERBUG originated in IRAQ now in Southern California ## This dosage is actually very commonly used in adults, so it's not unusual. The regular strength is usually used in children or the elderly that may be more susceptible to side effects or adverse reactions. The FDA lists the possible side effects as including nausea, dizziness, headache, non-al...

What does this medication look like? ## Well, since it is a generic for Bactrim, there are many on the market and they will all have different markings, depending on the dosage and manfacturer. Some markings include: IP 272 5898 V MP 85 93 089 IP 271 MP 81 E 112 SZ 286 DAN DAN 5547 33 BIOCRAFT And this is in no way a comprehensive list. Do any of these match the pill you are asking about? If not, please post back with the imprint from your tablet and I will gladly look it up for you.
