Penicillins (P, PCN or PEN) are a group of antibiotics originally obtained from Penicillium moulds, principally P. chrysogenum and P. rubens. Most penicillins in clinical use are chemically synthesised from naturally-produced penicillins. A number of natural penicillins have been discovered, but only two purified compounds are in clinical use: penicillin G (intramuscular or intravenous use) and penicillin V (given by mouth). Penicillins were among the first medications to be effective against...

I have been given some Penicillin VK for a sinus infection. I need to start taking norethisterone on Tuesday to delay my monthly cycle for a big event. Will the antibiotics contradict the Progesterone? I really need to NOT be having my period on Thursday ## Yes, it most likely will cause some issues with it and you may actually end up with more bleeding, rather than being able to delay your cycle. Learn more Progesterone details here. Did you end up having any luck with it? ## My daughter has found this out the hard way. Prescribed norethisterone prior to hysterectomy, she was then prescribed penicillin for throat infection by another GP. She immediately had horrendous blood loss and haemoglobin dropped from 120 to 88. She ended up with five units of blood over three separate transfusio...

Can i apply for RSS. I had this for months.penicillin cream.????? ## Hi jerry, What is it that you mean by applying for "RSS"? I'm sure you don't mean "Really Simple Syndication (RSS)" that websites use to feed headlines and news flashes, but I've never heard of the term/abbreviation being used in medical context... By the way, if your Penicillin cream really is "months old" and you're questioning whether it's still ok to take - an accurate answer would depend upon how it was stored, and whether it already expired. If that is the case and it is expired, then I think your best bet would probably be to get a new prescription, since older antibiotics (with less efficacy) may not fully eradicate a bacterial infection; potentially leading to antibi...

I have an abscessed tooth and got an antibiotic from a feed store called Fish Pen (penicillin) 250MG. The vet said it would be fine to take it. It's an oval pill with the number 520 on it. How often, how many and how long should I take it for? ## Hello, Cynthia! How are you? I'm sorry about the toothache. No, since it hasn't been specifically manufactured for human use, it may not be safe for you to take. The dosage can also vary, depending on the severity of the infection and your response to antibiotics, it can range from 500mgs twice daily up to 500mgs 4 times a day, sometimes even more. Side effects may include nausea, dizziness, non-allergic skin rash and diarrhea. Additionally, whatever caused the abscess will need to be taken care by your dentist, because while an ant...

what is the proper dosage for this medication? ## Penicillin is an antibiotic, used to treat many different types of infections. Thus, the dosing varies according to the type and severity of the infection being treated. If it has been unresponsive to other antibiotics, it will require a higher dosage for a longer period of time, so there really is no standard amount. What has the doctor recomended as a dosage? Did you have any other questions?

I'm taking cefdinir for an ear infection. Also i have 5 teeth that need cut out and I also have a bad abscess. Can I take penicillin too for the abscess? ## Hello, Teresa! How are you? You should take them both, if your doctor/dentist has instructed you to do so. Multiple antibiotics are often prescribed to treat particularly severe infections, or those caused by differing bacteria. The FDA lists the typical side effects as possibly including nausea, dizziness, headache, non-allergic skin rash and diarrhea. Has there been any change?

by-mycin 100 gms have taken for 5 days sputum still green 7th antibiotic at this stage am losing confidence in my Dr. can u suggest strongest for chest infection i suffer from hypersensitivity pneumonitis .allergy to penicillin. ## HI, Clare! Sorry about the problem that you're having. Which antibiotics have you tried? I've no idea what may be stronger, since you didn't list all of them. Another question, has your doctor done any lab work to determine the type of infection you have? Knowing the specific bacteria might make it easier to choose the correct antibiotic to eradicate it.

Can i take Penicillin VK with Sulfamethoxazole TMP DS? ## Has your doctor advised you to use them both? These are both antibiotics, just of different classes, so it is essentially doubling up on the same thing, which is only done in certain situations, due to the risk of developing antibiotic resistance. I've been having a sore throat for the past few days. The symptoms got worse every day. I started to sneeze, cough, and got a fever. I filled a prescription for some Penicillin called Ampicillina 500 mg per capsule from Mexico. I was instructed to take them every 8 hours, however, 3 pills a day seemed a bit much for me so I took one at 3 p.m. on Tuesday, May 23rd, and then another one 8 hours later. The next dose would have been at 7:00 a.m., on Wednesday, May 24th, but I didn't take one till 9:30 a.m.. I forgot to take another 8 hours later, and I remembered this at 10:39 p.m., so I took another dose at 10:39 p.m.. I set an alarm this time but must have slept through it as I didn't wake up until 8:30 a.m., and I took the next dose at 8:39 a.m.. I do feel worse today, howeve...

I have some penicillin meds that expired 02/25/2015. Can I still use them or are they not good? ## Hello, Casey! How are you? Medications tend to lose effectiveness over time, which is why they have expiration dates on them. Thus, it may not work as well and with antibiotics, it creates the risk of your developing antibiotic resistant bacteria, so it would be best to dispose of them. The FDA lists the typical side effects of this medication as possibly including nausea, dizziness, headache, non-allergic skin rash and diarrhea. Is there anything else I can help with?

I was taking penicillin and now need to switch to a zpak. How long should I wait before starting the new meds? ## Unless your doctor or pharmacist has said otherwise, you should be able to just cleanly switch from one to the other. The FDA lists the typical side effects as possibly including nausea, dizziness, headache, non-allergic skin rash, and diarrhea. In most cases, they just have you replace the next required dose with the new one and proceed from there. Are you on any other medications?

I just got off zpack about a week ago and before that i had taken penicillin vk 500mg. So i wanted to know if it's ok to take doxycycline 100 mg because my ears are bothering me now? ## That is fine, if your medical provider has instructed you to do so. The FDA lists the typical side effects of these antibiotic as possibly including nausea, dizziness, headache, non-allergic skin rash, and diarrhea. However, doing so without confirmation that you have an infection could cause you to develop antibiotic resistant bacteria, which could put your life in danger. Why have you been taking so many antibiotics?
