Looking at all the allergic reactions to Bactrim. If there is any way you can use another antibiotic, do so. This medication is seriously dangerous. I say this as a nurse, and also as a victim of a sulfa allergy. I was put on Bactrim for a MRSA infection. Long story short... Developed aseptic viral meningitis for the Bactrim. Ended up in the hospital for four days. Worst illness ever!!!! Look for fevers, severe headache, stiff neck. It will also cause "thrush" or yeast in your mouth. Painful. Rashes, vomiting, and loss of appetite are also common side effects. Avoid this medication if at all possible. I took bactrim generic to treat a vaginal labia cyst in late Oct, marsupialization surgery. The heavy duty bactrim seemingly got rid of the infection in that spot. That said, I suffered, for five weeks from acid poo and skin irritation down there, colitis syptoms like eat and then toilet time diarhea for five weeks. Plus, I got a painful diaper rash, and two yeast infections. Also, every time I shaved, even with a premium new razor - I got cuts on my thighs that filled with small amounts of pus. I added a daily vitamin, calcium and a probiotic to my diet which stopped the acid ass and #2 diarrhea. Ugh! 40 days since the cyst, I got another bad infection. Deep in left butt cheek. My son had an ear infection a month ago and was prescribed a 10 day course of Bactrim. He now has another ear infection and has been prescribed it again. My doctor told me it would be ok to take these two drugs together. They both state that nausea can be a side effect. When I was taking the Bactrim I had no symptoms but the day I took both, my stomach hurt for three days and of course I did not take another vyvanse since. I was prescribed Sulfameth/Tmp for UTI 2 months ago and my throat really hurts now and all i have is the listed medication. Can i use this antibiotic for my throat? i was recently prescribed bactrim (sulfamethoxazole and trimethoprim) for an infected burn. on the second day, i woke up with a really sore throat. by night, i had a fever, and the next morning, i had a sinus infection--which i used to get chronically from about 11 years ago, up until 4 years ago, in which time ive only had one. a day later i had a productive cough, semi bad but nowhere near as bad as the bronchitus the sinus infections would, after months, eventually turn into. those infectionswere clearly bacterial as whenever I did end up taking antibiotics, they always ended within a few days. Can I double up on my first dose of Bactrim to jump start the attack on my infection? ## I would be very careful about doubling up on the first dose, due to the fact of possible allergic reaction to the medication, which is significant'y higher with sulfur based drugs. ## Though this is an old post, I would like to add that doubling up is not a good idea, for more reasons than just the worry of an allergic reaction. Six months ago I had the staph infection MERSA. Three lesions were surgically treated and I was on bactrim for three weeks.The results were successful. One week ago I indicated to my internist,who was completely aware of the prior condition and treatment, that I had a supect growth on my rear. I still have two bottles of Amoxicillin oral 200/5 tri left over from a month ago with an expiration date of 6/16 I had for another bacterial infection ..now I have another infection that I see can be treated by this same med. I was taking cephalexin500 wasn't the right antibiotic for me so Dr. Gave me sulfatrimeth ds. 800 is it okay to switch from one antibiotic that isn't working to another antibiotic in the same day ## As long as you have your doctor's clearance to do so, there are no other real problems with it. I currently have a tooth abcess that my endodontist is trying to treat. The problem he is having is that I am allergic to the antibiotics that are best at treating this. I am allergic to penicillin, erythromycin, cephalosporins. We tried cipro but that did not do much after 2 weeks. Is there another antibiotic I can try? ## Are you able to take the sulfa based ones, such as Bactrim? It can cause some nasty side effects and there is the risk of being allergic for about 3% of people, which is why I don't usually recommend it to anyone, but it may be your best option.
